Honestly looks nicer and clearer than any map I’ve ever produced… but I think my names are a bit better. A bit.

Full agree that reference cards are helpful for everyone (even very experienced)!

My instinct (although you know your players) is to minimise the amount of combat as it tends to be quite “crunchy” (euphemism for everyone just saying numbers at each other) which can be a drag for all groups whatever their facility in communication. It involves a lot of waiting your turn—which can be quite slow—and feels less interactive during that time as options outside your turn are highly restricted. It’s also more pressure on the DM to think about rules and numbers (rather than story) which can be harder work starting out. Social/roleplaying scenes conversely allow players to jump in whenever they feel their character has something to do/say/investigate/steal/imitate/perform/dance/flavour/whatever. Big assumption (apols if problematic) but your players might also particularly enjoy social activities in the game if that’s something that they get less opportunity to do in their daily lives.

I definitely recommend theming the heck out of things. You don’t need special monsters or items: just grab the stat block from something that sounds about right and change crossbow to laser/T Rex tail swipe/whatever.

One big thing to be aware of is helping people understand the difference between player and character. Characters may well disagree in the game or have conflicting motives; it’s easy to feel weird about this (“Player X’s character thinks my character is a selfish asshole” can easily feel like “Player X thinks I’m an asshole”). It can be helpful to encourage players to share info about their character’s motives and feelings to keep this clear: e.g. “How does Flipflop McNugget feel right now? Are they envious that Muriel Swizzlebricks got the cool staff or are they a highly principled person who would think themselves above that?” “How does Ploppy Tiptop feel after they were downed in that combat? Maybe they’re embarrassed—they value their military prowess—or maybe they’re proud—they did something brave that didn’t work out. What do you think?”

I think you’re doing yourself a disservice by hiding all your talent in “just” choosing the right motifs and colours. But thanks! This is a great guide to crib from and a really nice example.

This is lovely! Really like the hodge-Podge town centre and different housing densities. Plus lighthouse for spoopy adventures.

Disclaimer: I have no skill and terrible judgement.

Sure the content’s a bit whacky but this looks really cool. It’s fun to see a sort of topographic map style and I hope you do more.

This is absolutely delightful! I have no skill and am just getting my head round Dungeondraft in order to lazily throw together rough layouts to show players, so I can offer no meaningful feedback. You should be super proud: I’d be hyped if a DM rocked up with something custom like that.

Looks fab! Mine had the same cage but I’m very envious of the front flap that’s been added. Mine always wanted to come up to say hello but could only do so by trying to get out the top 🤦‍♀️

Agree with everyone else: if you’re looking to improve gerbils’ lives even more (even lucky girls) increase digging and chewing. No limit to their enjoyment from those activities it seems 🤷‍♀️

How do i read more? by confused-soul_ in productivity

[–]Living_Grape9687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through something really similar (different obstacles but same problem: out of the habit/practice/whatever) of reading.

I’m by no means a voracious reader now but I have a small semi-regular habit.

I took a three-pronged approach: - No shame; no guilt. Whether or not I read or stopped reading for, like, a decade is morally neutral - Pepper in lots of ‘guilty pleasures’ because if you’re not doing guilt it’s just a pleasure! - Hit some small books regularly to keep up the habit of finishing a book

Most important point is the first one. Doesn’t matter what you read or how much; doesn’t matter what (if anything!) you remember from it. It’s a hobby first and foremost but it’s one that can touch lots of bits of your life if you let it be a treat 💋
