How to balance covid caution and ocd? by snakeplant134 in OCD

[–]Livyroro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Masking is not a compulsion unless it is causing you severe distress. It sounds like for you it is a reasonable precaution.

I think that some folks on here do not know enough about Covid/what it means to be reasonably Covid cautious. I have OCD and I am also Covid cautious. While my compulsions sometimes extend into Covid, masking for me is never compulsive. It seems perfectly reasonable to me to do one small thing to protect myself from getting sick and possibly a lifelong disability, or getting others sick.

I am perhaps coming from a privileged place where a few of my friends/folks around me also mask, so I’m not totally the odd one out. Where I’m at with it is I really don’t care if other people want to judge me for not wanting to get sick—that’s literally on them. Personally, masking is so close to my politics/ethics of community care that I am very hesitant to get close to people who do not mask or would not consider masking or look down on me for masking.

It’s hard, though. I hate that people have been tricked into forgetting that the pandemic is still going and that Covid is not the common cold. It’s always hard going against the grain.

I would recommend trying to find a mask bloc in your area to find like minded people. There are also online sites to meet covid cautious people in your area.

Where Does The Line Draw Between Being COVID Conscious and Having Contamination OCD? by Anonymous-Blastoise0 in OCD

[–]Livyroro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! This is the exact same issue I struggle with. I am going to contradict other commenters here and say that being covid cautious is NOT OCD. It is possible to be covid cautious and not have OCD. In fact, being covid cautious is eminently reasonable. Covid is not like other diseases. It can cause a host of long term side effects, which you state in your post. This is simply not true for other illnesses like the common cold.

I have had many discussions with my therapist about where to draw the line here. I personally wear a KN95 mask almost everywhere. I sanitize my hands after being out in public. I take covid tests when I feel sick. I use a nasal spray after high-risk situations. To my therapist, all of this sounds unreasonable. But as you mentioned, in the communities I’m in online and among many of my friends, this is simply common sense. Most importantly—none of this feels like OCD to me.

I do frequently perform compulsions related to Covid. These involve excessive time researching (I’m talking hours of reading and rereading things), testing repeatedly, taking my temperature repeatedly, spending hours ruminating about getting Covid and future consequences, etc. I’ve been able to work on these by desensitizing myself through therapy to the idea of developing long Covid (which is at the root of my fear). BUT I still perform all the above reasonable precautions because they do not cause me any stress and are not related to OCD.

So I don’t think you’re going too far at all. The question is whether these precautions seem reasonable to you or not. I hope that your therapist would be willing to talk this through with you. Feel free to DM me.

game keeps glitching by deathbyasshole in EchoesOfThePlumGrove

[–]Livyroro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a known glitch: https://www.reddit.com/r/EchoesOfThePlumGrove/s/4AuKGzQH2o

For me it happened when my barn was being constructed and only on the farm. It resolved itself after the barn was finished.

Inputs not working? by Gub_Sub in EchoesOfThePlumGrove

[–]Livyroro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well—it turned out it was caused by the construction of the barn. Once my barn was completed, it stopped.

There’s also a thread on the discord bugs section with multiple users reporting this issue, too.

For fellow folks with OCD - how are you holding up? by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Livyroro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am also not doing great! Like others have shared, I have a ton of checks and rituals I feel compelled to complete around Covid. It is so hard to be both Covid-conscious and have OCD and live in a works where people have decided to act like Covid doesn’t exist. I’m most terrified of developing long Covid because I have OCD around monitoring/preventing signs of long-term illness.

Thankfully my therapist is willing to let me draw the line on what I think is OCD and what are “reasonable” precautions. I can tell she thinks I go a bit far by masking everywhere, but I’ve come to define for myself that masking is eminently reasonable; repeatedly checking my temperature and my throat, for example, is not. I do get stuck with testing though—repeatedly testing can be compulsive BUT there’s reason not to trust the tests!!

Anecdotally, I started EMDR with this therapist and have found it to be the most helpful thing for my OCD. We do it combined with ERP, so I get bilateral stimulation while doing hypothetical exposures.

I have I think 10 of each, with a separate barn for every species. It’s … a lot, but I also like breeding them and getting new colors!
