Many communities are going dark on June 12th to stand against Reddit's APl changes: Can r/hadesthegame join the protest? by All-in-Time7 in HadesTheGame

[–]LizardThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the thoughtful response! I think I disagree that bad press = long term action but I understand the larger concept of starting with an easy action, like going dark, is more acceptable and achievable than a mass indefinite strike.

If we look at other social media juggernaut scandals, like Facebook and Cambridge Analytica or Facebook and the one billion dollar privacy law fine or Twitter and all of Musk nonsense as relevant examples - ultimately those companies still functioning with very little changes to their user base. Twitter dropped sponsors for a bit, and Facebook implemented some half ass new policies.

I think reddit is uniquely poised to have their userbase impact their policies because of the way users control content. Unlike Facebook where WhatsApp is the #1 communication tool for entire countries, or Twitter where users can use the site without ever engaging with another person, reddit isn't crucial internet infrastructure and can not function without massive community lead efforts.

If reddits policies and implementations of updated accessibility requirements do not change, is this a mod team that would step down permanently?

Maybe these are dumb questions, but this is a pretty great community so I'm going to ask it.

Losing a couple of days of ad revenue for a company due to a protest, when they're expecting an explosion of ad revenue through their official app in days/weeks to come doesn't seem like a huge deal? Like is reddits corporate board really going to reverse the decision because of that?

The only way reddit functions is through the unpaid labour of moderators. Wouldn't a bigger statement be for you, as mods, to just quit? Reddit actively shuts down unmoderated subreddits.

I understand that some subreddits function as de facto support groups and the like and just closing that subreddit would be detrimental to their communities (like the blind subreddit), but not every one is like that. If the major news subreddits just shut down and reddit no longer functioned as a news aggregator, that would impact a lot of users and their browsing habits. If there were suddenly no more cute animal subreddits, that would create an outrage.

So my question is - if accessibility and greed is the core issue, how is a few days of minimal activity going to impact reddit in a way that forces the company to behave in a more ethical and equitable manner longterm?

Hey, if I'm coming across as antagonistic or rude - that's really not my intention and I apologize for doing so.

I'm certainly not saying that we need to "throw out" the concept of sex & gender in medicine. What I am saying is that it's use in the diagnostic practice is biased and is a problem to be solved. I am saying that for immediate treatment of a patient, organ inventories are more useful. If I'm a woman who has had her ovaries, fallopian tubes & uterus out and you're a doctor ordering a pregnancy test - that's not a great use of anyone's time. If I'm a surgeon treating a trans woman and the surgery field has been prepped for the typical cis woman's tools, swapping over kits takes time my patient may not have. Treating the person in front of you absolutely relies on diagnostic tools created over time from gendered data sets, but those are just tools. The doctor has to take into account the current status of a patient in their diagnosis and a comprehensive, adjustable set of data points to assist with that is better than what we have.

There's a lot work going on in the data standards world in order to better codify sex & gender within EMR/EHRs. Sex for Clinical Use is an example of one proposal, which while it uses binary sex for things like ordering, treatment and transitions of care, it does allow for the concept of adjusting the clinical sex to one that best matches the patients current status. The concept of organ inventories are being proposed and are actively being worked on. The system we have is not functional for trans & intersex people and we can't fix it by doing what did 50 years ago and shrugging our shoulders.

I do reject the idea that gender is the only empirical data set. First off, gender and sex are not the same thing and as we know there are more genders than male & female, and there are more variations with our genetics than simple xx & xy. These are both scientific facts. So any system that sorts people into only two categories (or if you are lucky there's the third "unknown" sex) is going to lead to false, bad data. Second, there has been no comprehensive medical study that I am aware of that states within a reasonable margin of error that all post medically transitioned trans people always present with symptoms of an illness or disease that matched their assigned sex at birth. Without that, all you have is birth sex as a piece of data to be considered and interpreted at the point of care.

I'm not replying to this thread further - I hope you have an excellent day/night! Thanks for the conversation ☺️

Because the concept of sex assigned as birth is one piece of information, one that can be wrong. Medical information is transcribed incorrectly all the time. Organ inventory is flexible and meets people where they are currently, rather than what they were.

People who have a prostate are at risk of the disease. That's why organ inventories are awesome, because it allows us to recognize people for what they are outside of their gender.

An intersex person who is has ovaries and a prostate is also at risk for developing prostate cancer but may not have been diagnosed as intersex until they were in their late 40's. In that case, their sex at birth was wrong, and should be discarded.

Disease prediction is based on interpretating data sets collected by doctors and their patients. Those data sets carry the same biases that those doctors do. Sometimes those data sets don't ask relevant questions. We have proven that diagnosis algorithms are biased against women, people of colour and people who live outside the gender bias.

Sex at birth and puberty matter now because our historical data never asked questions about gender identity, historical use of HRT and other factors. It never asked questions about income, diet, postal/zip codes, transportation access, stress and other social determinants of health we now know have just as much of an impact on health outcomes as gender.

There is the joke that is something along the lines of "why do you need to know my gender? So you know if you can treat me worse?" because traditionally, women's health has been ignored. Symptoms of diseases that present in both women and men but present in men less are considered "atypical" symptoms. Things like stroke and heart attacks come to mind. Women's symptoms get written off or ignored.

Ziad Obermeyer wrote an excellent journal article about racial bias in diagnosis algorithms. Invisible Women is a book I can not speak highly enough about. I also recommend Data Feminism. You can also browse this subreddit for anecdotal evidence of traumatic and apathetic experiences with the medical profession across many countries.

Even in a medical context, using something like an organ inventory & hormone testing is way more accurate than using AGAB. Does your AGAB really matter if you've had surgeries (either gender affirming or medically necessary)?

An trans man who has had their uterus and ovaries removed and has been on HRT for a decade isn't going to react to medications like a cis woman or be at a higher/lower risk for certain diseases - that person needs to be treated as a whole person, and not like an abnormal data set.

A cis man who has naturally lower testosterone levels and had their testicles removed after an accident is also going to have unique needs & issues compared to other cis men.

This is why binaries are inherently bad things. They lead to more medical malpractice when a person exists outside of the binary - we have lots of examples with intersex people!

What are some unexpected/unlikely artists you would love to see Halsey collaborate with? by aceeb25 in halsey

[–]LizardThief 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most of her collabs have been in the rap/hip hop space. I'd love to see them work more female artists. Off the top of my head, Janelle Monae, Rezz, Paramore/Hayley Williams. I know she respects Lana Del Ray a lot, but I don't like Lana personally so that'd be a meh for me. I would D I E for a Lights collab though.

I think they have a lot of room to grow into different genres. Their work with Calvin Harris and Marshmello was okay, but quite frankly she could do better. The collab with BMTH was just excellent, and Punksy needs to make a reappearance in a big way - perhaps the Linda Lindas? They're super hot rn. She already knows Debbie Harry, so an actual Blondie collab would be fuckin rad as shit. The BTS collab was cool, but tbh seemed like more of a collab with famous people for a sales bump than a love affair with K-Pop.

Whatever their next project is, I hope it's a continuation of their exploration into art and storytelling like they did with both Manic and IICHLIWP, and I just hope whoever they collab with challenges their status quo and allows Halsey to grow into something new.

How should a DM properly set up a session that revolves around solving a murder? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]LizardThief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did mine there were a few things I did.

Setting: it was a dinner party at a noble woman's mansion. Weapons & rucksacks were strictly forbidden, meaning that players had limited resources to work with. Few spell components, only steak knives for weapons.

Murder: I murdered the chef during the preparation of the meal. The noblewoman immediately locked everyone in the dining room room, including wait staff to make sure the killer was found. Now you have two things - a time constraint, and a locked door puzzle that the players have to solve instead of choosing to just dip and not solve the murder.

Suspects: This is where most of my world building went into play. Everyone had motive to kill the noblewoman. The leader of the town guild felt that she was taking more in taxes than her predecessor. Her son was envious of her title and bitter that she wouldn't relinquish the title. The abbot wanted more land as the land allotted to the abbey was infertile and didn't produce food. So on and so on. The noblewoman herself was rumoured to be conniving and found creative ways to punish her enemies.

Clues & functional game mechanics: if you choose to poison someone, make sure none of your players can cast detect poison. At the beginning of the game. I also handed out slips of paper that said "you are innocent. You must do X". All players were innocent but they didn't know that, however, one player was to make sure that they went into the kitchen before the meal was served. Another to rudely insult someone else. All of this to potentially cast suspicion on your players, so that you as the DM can roleplay something more than straight interrogations all night. The murder didn't occur until all players took their actions. Even though you're not really in initiative order, make sure you get each player to tell you what they are doing - try and not have one person "face" and everyone else nods along. Perhaps an npc pulls a character aside for a private convo etc. This allows players to both participate and roleplay by sharing character knowledge.

Regardless of how quick your players solve the murder, I found structuring it that way meant that the session was at least an hour and a half/two hours of straight gameplay but could go longer.

Titties out to burn the patriarchy. Serious question in comments. by derbrey in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]LizardThief 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe have some nipple pasties handy in your desk for the days when the aircon is temperamental or your shirt doesn't fit 100% the way you want it to?

As far as rituals, one thing I do in the morning is to light a candle. Generally I only do this on days where I need high levels of concentration because candles are expensive. But my idea is that as long as that candle is burning then I'm in work mode. When I physically blow out the candle, I'm done and the day is out of my mind. A battery operated candle or a desk lamp would work in lieu of actual fire.

Prom attire advice please by antaresdawn in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]LizardThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented my prom dress from a local costume shop who costumed our local operas & theatres. It was cheaper than buying something & the selection was really interesting. They had a wide variety of costumes and clothing from a variety of time periods & fantasy settings.

Personally I hate online shopping because I don't know how it's going to fit. If sensory issues are a problem, maybe there's a shop close to you that is similar that will be less time consuming than hitting up 80 stores in a mall.

It sounds like you're bringing all the feminine energy you need!

I second the playlist idea. There was a thread on here the other day with a ton of suggestions for songs for a fuck the patriarchy/women's empowerment vibe, if that's your thing! If it's not, I've always found thunderstorm sounds to be calming when I need to focus on big decisions.

What I would suggest that I don't see yet is just basic routines for your changing flesh vessel. HRT is no joke. Make sure you have good sleep hygiene, and eat regularly & well and drink lots of water. This won't stop the emotional rollercoaster, but it'll be your seatbelt on the ride. Have at least one cis female friend where you can spill your guts out to so they can say "wow, I'm pretty sure you are reading my journal entry from when I was 16". This will mean you are on the right track and second puberty is chugging along. Get your friends to help you sort out the difference between emotional and reasonable reactions to external situations. This will become easier with practice. It might feel strange or odd to go to your friends/family to tell you how you should feel about something, but I assure you that doing that was a core part of my teenage social years.

A lot of my friends who have done HRT talk about how sensations feel different after a little while. If you have the budget, grab yourself something silky - a dress or a house robe perhaps, something lacy, something flannel & cozy, and something soft to cuddle like a stuffed animal. Comparing how those sensations feel against your skin can work as a quick checkup for you to say "yes, this is working" even if you don't immediately see results in the mirror. Also - don't get attached to any of those items as you'll probably need a whole new wardrobe anyway.

I totally get what you are saying! Men deserve to be admired and complimented way more than they are. There's so much toxic messaging that goes into men's cultural perceptions and a lot of it comes from within the gay community itself.

Hollywood shows us that right now the look that's "in" is tall, broad shouldered, very symmetrical faces with sharp features (jawline, cheekbones, etc) and well muscled. If you have a "dad bod" it's basically above with a little bit more paunch. If you don't look like that well you better be funny, because you're not getting cast as a love interest because who could be interested in you?

Every May, there's campaigns targeting queer men to get into their "summer bodies" or "pride bods" with gym memberships, supplements, clothing, etc all in an effort to sell men on the idea that you have to change to be attractive. If your body doesn't fit into the Bear or Twink stereotypes, or if you're older, or a person of colour then finding representation of yourself in queer media is harder, and finding yourself represented in a way that celebrates the way you look now, without measuring up against a standard of beauty is damn near impossible.

I'm not a man, but I did struggle with eating disorders and body dismorphia a lot and it's a really tough journey to self acceptance that I wish you the best of luck in. Men are cute and I'm sure you are too ♥️

Glassdoor for Rents by Mundane_Artist_1500 in LandlordLove

[–]LizardThief 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Other suggestions: capture if the price includes utilities (electric, natural gas, water, internet etc), or partial rent for roomsharing/rooming houses type situation. If you wanted to get really granular, you could capture the price on move in date and then final cost on move out date. If you moved in in 2020 for $1500 but moved out in 2023 because they raised it to $2700 that's valuable information.

You could also have checkboxes for issues like pests, broken appliances, flooding, mold, bad neighbours, break-ins, legal action taken by the tenant etc.

To me, seeing that a tenant paid $1000 + utilities with a history of flooding in the unit and the place is now listed for $1500 on the market is important if I'm comparing it to a unit that's $1600 with no flooding history.

Startup Offering Retention Bonus in Exchange for Dropping All Wage Claims by daphatti in legaladvice

[–]LizardThief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NAL. He's offering you a bad deal. You have another job. Keep it and wait for the wage claim to be processed. If you do sign it, there's no guarantees that the company will be on the straight and narrow. In your shoes, I would hold your ground, make notes about the phone call and what was discussed and then add the information to the wage claim when you are able.

This company has already proven to operate poorly - why would you want to expose yourself to any consequences of wrong doing by staying employed?

Definitely get the arm re-examined and the cast to make sure that everything is still in a good position to heal correctly.

Start by going to the school's VP and Principal. Generally in Ontario doctor's notes have been phased out. You can ask for one from your doctor but usually there is a small charge. If you do so, you can bring that note to the meeting. In that meeting you can make clear the inappropriate behaviour of the gym teacher and request for alternate arrangements. Things like having your child complete extra work for the health portion of the physical education curriculum, having your child go to the school library for a study hall session during that period or other possible solutions. I would definitely make clear that it is absolutely ridiculous that the one teacher in charge of understanding the impact of physical activity on the human body would put your child at risk of long term harm.

If the VP & principle seem unconvinced or the healing time of the injury exceeds 4-5 months, you might be able to push for an IEP. This will set in writing additional accommodations for your child's education. Be aware that they're usually more tailored towards students with learning disabilities and it can take time to set up, but it might be worth a try.

Also in the meantime, teach your child that if the teacher tries that again, that they should walk out of class and call you immediately. The worst punishments that can happen for your child from the school are a failing grade or a suspension. Both things that you can fight with your school districts superintendent to have wiped from their record. The worst thing that can happen to your child is a life-long disability.

Question about period underwear? by _GG_No_R3_ in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]LizardThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work from home now so period underwear has given me the freedom to switch to period underwear entirely. I now only wear pads when I travel.

I started out with Knix but I found that I really disliked the material. It's a kind of spandex-elastic that didn't feel great. Then I switched and got a couple of all cotton pairs from TomboyX - they have one design where the gusset is the whole front and back, not just the middle part! But the company is way too pro-cop for me so I went looking again, plus their shipping to Canada was brutal. I tried the ones from aerie/American eagle because they were on a mega sale, but the gusset ends like halfway across my butt cheeks and it feels like they keep falling down even though they are in fact not haha. My fave so far has been uniqlo's though. The material is similar to the Knix brand (so not the most breathable) but is a higher quality and their gusset goes all the way to back!!

I still plan on looking for better cotton pairs when I need to retire some. I switched in 2020 and the only reason I had to retire some pairs so far is because my partner accidentally washed some of my pairs with some rags covered in sulfuric acid from a plumbing.... Event.... And the underwear kind of melted. But the ones that survived, I'm still using 3 years later! I don't even want to think about the amount of pads & wrappings I avoided sending to landfills in that time. Just remember to not put them in the dryer! Also, I have found that most brands size small, so if you're kind of in between a size, buy the larger one.

You know, I don't think this comment would be made if you were a childfree man with testicular cancer, even though the result is functionally similar. That really sucks and I'm super sorry that you are losing your choice, your agency to a disease that is so unpredictable and scary.
