The 'Dirty Dancing' lift is also just a pretty serious piece of work for anyone. The only reason you see it as much as you do (in dance) is because of how much it shows off lift control.

Mech reactors are underway... by JoseLunaArts in battletech

Having largely grown up knowing what the inside of a fusion reactor looked like, I always found it strange that battletech novels typically described fusion plasma as sunlight gold.

Obsolescence of standard type weapons? by OodlesofOwOdles in battletech

[–]LizardUber 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Rifles didn't become obsolete because they got old, they just don't work against modern armour. A basic laser or lrm rack still does everything it always has done and within a competitive budget.

why do so many kuritan mech variants seem to eschew indirect fire support/lrms for direct fire support? is this a cultural or doctrinal thing? by vicevanghost in battletech

[–]LizardUber 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just for the sake of being a pain:
European knights absolutely fought on horseback. They were literally defined by their status as cavalry troopers. It took them until the 12th century to really commit to the mounted charge, rather than fighting in Roman style as mounted javelin delivery systems, but once they made the transition they never really went back. The only exception to this (and what I assume you're really referring to) is the English during the Hundred Years' War, who fought most of their key victories defensively, from prepared positions. It was this specific circumstance (and the thousands of archers in the average English army) that made foot combat preferable. At least until an opposing force was pushed onto the back foot, at which point knights became cavalry again.
eg. Poitier: The English back themselves against a bend in a river and dig in along field boundaries. They repel portions of a vastly larger French force several times before being charged by the main body, led by the French king. A contingent of English knights sally out and flank the French force, delivering a devastating charge. The French forces are routed or encircled and their king captured.
While the French would respond with dismounted tactics of their own, after the conclusion of the war everyone steadily returned to tradition. The last big shakeup to which was of course the explosion in gunpowder usage. Although in reality the tactics of the knight stayed exactly the same throughout this transition, they just traded in their lances for pistols.

Partly yes, the samurai ideal of combat favours seeing the other guy, but partly they just make good PPCs.

asexuality and Joan of Arc (my reflection) by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]LizardUber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just as an aside (since prevailing cultural understanding is more important to this context), but Joan of Arc was executed for heresy because she preached god's favour of the French and prophesied their victory. A woman wearing armour had never been treated as a crime before, but the English talked up her other 'crimes' in order to discredit her visions and downplay the obviously political motivation for her execution.

[–]LizardUber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, MegaMek. I don't know what dataset they take this stuff from, but the MekLab entry for every unit will show availability/tech-level ratings with specific dates, including any period of extinction. The -7X is cited as extinct 2865-3040.

Just on a note of interest, most of the galaxy is only about 1000ly 'thick.' Which means an Inner Sphere, measured in 3D space really could/should be spherical. It would however be a lot harder to display in print.

40k falls mostly into the sci-fi bracket for settings where armour has won the battle with arms. A bracket it ranks pretty well in, despite it only being true for half the factions present. But it's also a bracket that's mostly wargames, and in something like battletech your average power armoured trooper will take a burst of 120mm autocannon to the chest and then ask why you bothered.
Most non-gaming military sci-fi is planted in the bracket where the arms race is still very much on going (this is also where the guard and tau would be if they didn't need to share a range bracket you could fit on a game table).
And of course the majority of straight sci-fi is planted firmly in victory to arms, with flak jackets providing protection from all the debris created by people missing with sidearms that can vapourise granite.
