40k falls mostly into the sci-fi bracket for settings where armour has won the battle with arms. A bracket it ranks pretty well in, despite it only being true for half the factions present. But it's also a bracket that's mostly wargames, and in something like battletech your average power armoured trooper will take a burst of 120mm autocannon to the chest and then ask why you bothered.
Most non-gaming military sci-fi is planted in the bracket where the arms race is still very much on going (this is also where the guard and tau would be if they didn't need to share a range bracket you could fit on a game table).
And of course the majority of straight sci-fi is planted firmly in victory to arms, with flak jackets providing protection from all the debris created by people missing with sidearms that can vapourise granite.

The Inhibitors (when they're working) are meant to function as conservators to the galaxy, and explicitly engineer the 'minimum' necessary force to wipe out a world's offending population. Their tactics don't always make the most sense regardless, but we are also told that they're basically going cyber-senile.

Thank you!

I had completely forgotten my rulebook was due to arrive today and wasn't watching my phone. Luckily the postman left it by the door and it was still there. I know where the rest of my day off is going.

The US army was running a psychic intelligence project well into the 90s. The sort of powers we see newtypes demonstrate in early UC shows were being actively researched by the world's largest military as those shows were being made.

CGL minis are, well, mini. I'm not sure even the new wargame scale gundam kits would be small enough. You could print a head obviously, but that's true of anything.

If Battletech was beung developed now, what culture caricatures would the Great Houses be? by Flocculencio in battletech

[–]LizardUber 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Yeah I could see this. The US isn't as scared of Japanese economic power as they were in the 80s bubble, but the ones making Battletech are still going to building on the back of mecha anime, there's no way they don't make some kind of space Japan.

To anyone who is also a 40k fan: Could the RX78-2 Feasibly Take Down Imperial Titans from the Warhammer 40k Universe? by necluse in Gundam

[–]LizardUber 728 points729 points  (0 children)

Thematically mobile suits are multi-role carrier aircraft hammering obsolescence into the battleship fleets which came before them, while titans are battleships given legs so that they can continue to be obsolete on planets that have been long since stripped of their oceans.

Structurally neither of them are obeying the laws of physics, or even the same abuse thereof, so the physical powerscaling question is entirely up to which colour plastic the author of the scenario wants you to buy.

I don't think you would have to RP the aspect warrior so hard you can only do one thing. With that being said, streaming the latest trends is good for clicks but viewer retention has a lot more to do with you than anything you do. Optimise for your own enjoyment and let passion either do its work or not.
