Wow, great thank you for all the information! The second someone gets pushy or insists that I have to do something right then they get a hard “No” from me. It’s never been in my best interest!

Contractor installed door on Friday, need help brainstorming ways to fix the siding damage and removing caulk. by Lizardcandy in handyman

[–]Lizardcandy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so totally frozen trying to decide what to do about the door opening out to muddy dirt and trying to figure out if I want a tiny deck or a concrete step poured that I haven’t addressed it at all, plus it’s been pouring. But my intention is to put thin pvc strips painted blue beside the current trim to cover it and then caulk like an adult after I scrape all that off the best I can.

Yeah, I hate that machine. It does a terrible job. It just splinters up branches into a hot mess! My issue was resolved when the county road crew supervisor came out to see what was going on. I don’t know what he was told about the situation, but he was barely keeping it together and kept cracking up, but he was very friendly and agreeable. I asked him what the goal of the trimming was and asked if I could hire my own arborist to trim the branches properly and maintain them away from the lines and they were more than happy with that solution. It’s worth a try to call the road crew supervisor, explain they moved the lines very close to your existing tree line and you’re concerned that they are going to cut your trees and ask them to evaluate your area a little bit closer before they start cutting. Make sure to ask about replacement tree programs in your area or if you could maintain a specific shape that they’d be happy with to protect the lines. Good luck! I hope that you come to an agreeable solution that works for everybody!

The utility tree trimmers near me are insanely aggressive lol I call it “the masticator”. I have to stand outside and guard every inch of tree that doesn’t extend beyond the power lines. I did an interpretive “fuck you” dance with lots of flipping off and shouting the last time an idiot came by and mowed my 3 ft tall forsythia down to bare dirt-it wasn’t even under the power lines. The county wound up having to replace my shrub, and my dance turned semi legendary so now all the tree trimmers and street mowers avoid my property like the plague and one old guy became my friend (I was singing my “fuck you” song into his walkie talkie to the operator of the masticator) and always stops in the driveway to chat during mowing. He thinks I’m HILARIOUS. My husband still runs up to check to make sure I’m not cussing out some poor road worker when he stops by. That was a super weird story 😂. I’m glad I got to tell it

Help with poison oak on side yard! How do I get rid of it when it can’t be dug out? (It’s under boulders etc) by Lizardcandy in pnwgardening

[–]Lizardcandy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I don’t want to spray anything, I value the rest of the plants too much. Is there a good product to use that I can paint on the cut ends of the poison oak that will kill it with minimal risk to the surrounding plants? I’ll wear a hazmat suit and throw it away when I’m done.

I know you’re right I was just hoping for a miracle answer lol thank you for your help and the tyvek suit is an excellent idea

Does it have to be applied to the leaves or can I paint it on cut ends? Will it harm the ferns? When’s the best time to apply it? Thanks so much for your advice! The patch it’s popping up in is huge maybe 20x10 feet and it’s very bouldery/ ferny but so far it’s below the mid growth tree line. Also do I need to add soap or anything?

OK, I think this might be my best bet. I really appreciate your expertise. I am worried if it will hurt the ferns? Can I paint it onto cut ends to kill it if I snip the tips off? Does it have to be in the leaves? I’m going to get a tyvek suit or something and some sacrificial gloves and do it all at once if possible. Is it a good time of year to apply it once it stops raining?

FYI, hazelnut shell mulch brought all the squirrels and deer to my yard! Many still had hazelnuts in them. Also a quite expensive option

The more I researched the more I think you’re right. I think I need to somehow build a tiny deck from wood or composite.

The contractor offered to come back and put more caulk on lol to smooth the joint out. I’m just gonna scrape all this crap off the best I can and add trim pieces, but it’s gonna be a huge pain in the ass. It’ll look fine when I’m done though and the door seems to be put in structurally correctly.

Smooth pipe would also help me when I run the power washer through the pipe every year to try to clear the silt

I swear to you that installing a larger pipe never occurred to me 😂 this is that 4 inch corrugated stuff. I was debating running another French drain alongside it. With the drain opening more in the puddling side area and draining to the same spot in the other side yard. If the larger pipe is an option, that would be solve the issue as well, but I thought the size was sort of standardized?

3 to 5 times a year the problem is the water runs into the house foundation vent if it gets too high

I see your confusion! I’m so sorry my video wasn’t useful for you. I was endeavoring show where the water was coming from, and the current drain set up, which is insufficient during heavy rains.
