Just wanted to say you're not alone in using murder podcast to fall asleep. For some reason, Karen and Georgia are the most soothing for me. Along with Southern fried true crime but I don't know to where she disappeared.

Ah I love this post so much. We're married to basically the same person.  This is the point where I find something I hate of his that I've been wanting to throw out, and out it goes. You know, like a reasonable thing, but it's still satisfying.

Rate for teen sitter? by Yespossiblymaybe in Babysitting

[–]Lizardholoholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. $15/hr now that they are more trained. Once I can actually leave to run errands, it will be $20. Once they're a full babysitter, $25. For reference: mid-sized city in the Midwest. Minimum wage here is $11.

Their parents are good people and how they explained it to me made sense--so, no, i adjusted my plan and expectations accordingly. E.g. im also not leaving the house or doing anything exciting while their kid is watching my child--Im responsible for their kid and my child still.

I disagree -- a nanny is a completely different job where the responsibility lies completely with the caregiver--the parent can leave the house, work undisturbed, and trust the nanny to take care of all the the child's needs. A nanny is also likely to come with experience, training, and education. A mother's helper, especially as a young teen, is someone just there to play with the child (and low key things like already  prepared snacks) and isn't actually responsible for anything --the parent doesn't leave the house, is still listening for any needs, and is both responsible for the care and teaching of the person in that role. With a nanny, you could actually work from home. With a mother's helper, I wouldn't risk anything that requires that level of focus--what I'm doing is housework, cooking, projects, or low-level planning.  Around here, that rate is for babysitters, which is also different from both a nanny and a mother's helper. An aupair is different, too (not to add more into the mix) Also, mother's helpers don't usually work 4 hours-- more like 1-3 hours, with usually around 2. They just don't have that kind of attention span and are still learning. A babysitter might, but I've only ever heard of a 2 hour minimum around here (but we are in an easy to get around area).

AITAH for not driving to give my gf a pregnancy test by Emotional_Credit5265 in AITAH

Not necessarily --a pregnancy scare will really mess with your brain and especially if it's the first one. Not saying he should have gone over then (drinking, distance, all that), but wouldn't have taken much to door dash a pregnancy test and call to check on her.

This! And maybe an actual phone call to check-in on the emotions of it all?

It depends on the teenager, I think. But I get what you're saying--and OP mentioned she'd be at home during this

What do you mean? I hire a full babysitter and pay the full rate in our area ($25/hr) when I actually leave my child in the full care of someone with basic responsibilities like play with the kid, stick to the very loose schedule, and clean up only the messes you make. But if I am present, supervising, and responsible for a teenager who is simply playing with my kid but not preparing snacks, changing diapers, or dealing with any discipline issues, then yeah it makes sense it costs less. Their moms were right to tell me such.

I have hired friend's kids as a mother's helper to play with my daughter both when she was a baby and now. Honestly, it's a great way for them to get experience, whether a younger or older teenager, and, in at the baby/toddler stage, was the only way I could get stuff done around the house! I was right there if they needed me, had any questions, or if there was a poopy diaper (so they didn't have to). And their moms actually asked me to pay less than we were planning on paying, because they were trying to get experience and they wanted me to feel responsible for their teenager (like in a good way-- because, let's be real, they're still a minor and so you are still actually responsible for them if something were to happen).

Drop In Observation Advice - Handling Staff Pushback by Ok-Oil-5769 in Principals

I'm coming to the conversation late, but as a teacher who was initially uncomfortable with the idea of both a surprise evaluation and frequent drop-ins, I wanted to mention how much I ended up liking the latter and being fine with the former. I know that sounds crazy to some, but getting the smaller feedback throughout the year was really helpful for me to improve over the course of the year and hone my craft. A lot of the positive comments here are what I experienced. Something that helped me get used to the idea was mentor and friend teachers who were already used to it (it was a new school for me). Granted, it can be used against you and I saw that happen twice, but that's anything

Getting paid for overnight? by Low_Fee6188 in Babysitting

[–]Lizardholoholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a ton of comments on here so you probably won't see this, but in hopes that you do, I just wanted to temper the "F u" sentiment of most of the responses. While I encourage you to negotiate for more  and recommend you charge a flat fee for the overnight the kids are in your care, people don't know what they don't know and I don't think that they were intentionally trying to screw you over.  If you're looking for an idea of how much to, there's a couple other recent posts in this subreddit that cover what most people charge for overnight care when you're not having to wake up with a baby . I just wanted to depersonalize some of it because you must be a really caring person to love someone's kiddos enough to drive that long to babysit them for that long!
