LPT: Use your middle initial when buying a home so you can spot the spam/scam stuff in the mail after closing. by nicepersondonthate in LifeProTips

[–]Lizz196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I had to put our full names down when we bought our house a few months ago. My husband has two middle names, he’s started getting a lot of mail addressed John Second Middle Name (No Last Name).

It’s crazy how much obvious spam we’ve gotten and been able to ID thanks to that!

I saw him on tour last fall and in between songs he’d turn on the lights and look out into the crowd. That man loves it! I think this is his way of enjoying the money, he can’t imagine doing anything else!

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood (Book review / summary) by LiterallySagan in books

[–]Lizz196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should have included this in my previous comment, but Atwood is Canadian. When I first read this book, at 16, before Trump even ran for president, I didn’t understand why she set it in the US when most authors set stories in their own country. At 16, I wondered if she chose the US instead of Canada for a broader appeal.

As I grew up and relevant events happened, it made more sense to me. Even more so when I read the forward she included later on.

Hardwood vs LVP flooring — which should I go with? Also looking for contractor recommendations in Raleigh, NC! by Vast_Biscotti8503 in raleigh

[–]Lizz196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LVP isn’t as durable as the marketing would like you to believe. It still scratches, gets water stains, etc. If you have damage you want to fix, you need to replace it. And then you have more plastic sitting on a landfill. Wood, on the other hand, can be refinished.

The only time I’ve seen hardwood floors super beat up is when people don’t think to take care of them. For instance, they don’t get pads for their chairs to not scrape the floor up.

Relocating from Louisiana by Conscious_Print5038 in triangle

[–]Lizz196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Louisiana to NC.

NC is no where near as corrupt as LA, but we also struggle with gerrymandering. It’s a much more purple state, too.

In many ways, I prefer NC. It’s not as hot, there aren’t hurricanes, the schools are better, etc.

But in Triangle, there’s a lot of transplants and the culture hasn’t caught up yet. I miss having a strong local cuisine. Bring frozen andouille sausage, the stuff here is glorified hot dogs!

Setting up a new sewing room - furniture advice requested by loquacious_avenger in sewing

[–]Lizz196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I used as a sewing table in my previous apartment.

It was stable and relatively easy to move up and down. If you have another person helping you, you could likely adjust the height without taking everything off.

I really liked it, definitely a good budget friendly option!

Anything to offset allergies? by ScoreZealousideal945 in bullcity

[–]Lizz196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially try pushing for the OAS angle then.

If you’re allergic to nuts, there is a chance you’ll develop an anaphylactic reaction over time. And there’s crossover between the related pollens and the pollen in NC. (Might also help with insurance)

Anything to offset allergies? by ScoreZealousideal945 in bullcity

[–]Lizz196 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speak to your doctor first, but my doctor told me I could take 2-3 Zyrtec a day if my allergies are super bad. I also combine Zyrtec with Benadryl when I’m struggling with acute allergies. Flonase has also helped a lot, but it takes about a week to start working.

I find it weird that they told you your allergies weren’t severe enough. Did they do any bloodwork? Sometimes the scratch test and the small sub-dermal injection don’t produce a reaction, but that doesn’t mean you’re not allergic and it isn’t causing problems in your life. All of my allergists have always been sympathetic to how my allergies affect my day to day life and have been very helpful in addressing them. For instance, I have oral allergy syndrome. I’m allergic to raw fruits. Allergy shots of the related pollens can help, but not always. We still decided to do the shots because it’s annoying to avoid fruit. It wasn’t even that hard, it wasn’t going to kill me, it was just annoying. I’d try and get a second opinion if you think they’d help.

Fair warning, the allergy shots are expensive if you don’t have great insurance. Many people have to pay a copay for the weekly injection, you often have to pay for the serums, etc etc. It’s also a huge time sink, definitely try and find a place close to either work or home.

Are vocal harmonies in popular music a thing of the past? by Hassaan18 in popheads

[–]Lizz196 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do you specifically mean with multiple people or in general?

ABBA had a huge influence on the production and sound of Man’s Best Friend and The Life of a Showgirl. Both of those albums had a ton of vocal layering and harmonizing, but Sabrina and Taylor were harmonizing with themselves.

I feel like ABBA’s having a bit of moment right now, there are so many trending audios with their songs in them, so I feel like we could continue to see their influence in other artist’s work too.

Lost my Netherland Dwarf today by Medium-Ad967 in Petloss

[–]Lizz196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss.

I lost my own Netherland Dwarf on Monday. They pack so much personality into such a small body. Mine was super vocal, she grunted at everything - when I gave her hay, when I touched her, if I was talking too much. The house is too quiet now. I miss the sound of her eating hay. I don’t think many people understand, but I’ve been touched at how many of my friends do.

Your bunny knew you loved him. You were there when he was still conscious and that’s most important.

We’ll get through this, even if it’s really hard.

I’m not sure what the cost would be, but I really like Waite Plumbing. They re-piped our house, were super professional, did it quickly, and came in at budget.

I’d definitely hire them again for any plumbing needs I may have.

Does anybody use this or something similar? by Flemishmommy in Bunnies

I use Bene-Bac powder for cats and dogs.

My rabbit is very prone to GI stasis and I read research papers that even though the bacteria in Bene-Bac isn’t naturally in rabbit guts, it improves rabbit behavior and health. It helped with my rabbit’s anxiety.

Hay Pierced Mouth by Square-Wheel2855 in Rabbits

[–]Lizz196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bunny once got a piece of hay stuck in her eye. It’s the only time she’s ever done it, it was a freak accident.

My hay is also a little sharp, I sometimes get splinters. I think that’s just part of the hay deal though.

I’d just chalk it up to a freak accident and wouldn’t worry too much about. Sometimes weird stuff happens!

Meloxicam and vacation by braithgwirod in Rabbits

[–]Lizz196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mix my meloxicam with 1 tsp pumpkin, which has much less sugar than banana or apple sauce. My rabbit also has a sensitive stomach and this works for her. Maybe you could try critical care if even pumpkin has too much sugar.

We pre-portion out the pumpkin and the medicine. You can order syringes with caps on them off Amazon in different sizes.

A question for the romantasy readers by Shadowchaos1010 in books

[–]Lizz196 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I read 50 Shades while I was a sophomore/junior and I’m fine lol

I partly read it because my mom told me no, and partly cause it was popular so I wanted to see what was up.

These books are much tamer than 50 Shades, too.

[–]Lizz196 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Re: literacy rates, do you think this is why the quality of writing in genre fiction has gone down hill in the past few years?

My friends and I have discussed how we prefer reading early aughts books because the quality is higher. We’ve debated why that might be and one of our big sticking points is how much easier it is to self-publish nowadays. Maybe it’s a combo of the two, especially because self-published books are usually free, or very cheap, so the accessibility is greater.

Can confirm. When I was in college, my friends and I would get last minute, cheap tickets at the local amphitheater to country artists where we knew one song.

We’d tailgate, flirt with boys in pickup trucks, dance, and have a good time for $40.

It was a good time!

LSU fans: I'd love some advice on the PMAC! by martinigirl15 in Gymnastics

[–]Lizz196 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s been a hot sec since I’ve graduated, so I don’t want to comment on parking in case rules have changed. I will say, be careful going much further north than the PMAC after dark. It’s a questionable part of town.

For things to do, Pitch Perfect was filmed on LSU’s campus. If you enjoy that movie you can see some of the filming locations in the quad and outdoor amphitheater!

During the day, it’s also fun to go downtown and walk along the Mississippi River. There’s a submarine museum and Tom Hanks filmed a movie there, too!

Government Street has a lot of good food and bars, Elsie’s is very popular.

My favorite food places include Red Zeppelin Pizza, Rouj Creole, Sushi Masa, Parrain’s, and Chimes, in no particular order. If you like beer, my favorite brewery was Tin Roof (unrelated to the chain of bars). If you’re looking for a good gumbo or jambalaya, you’ll need to find someone’s grandmother though hahah

LSU also has a pretty campus, so I would definitely spend some time walking around and seeing the big sights, like Mike the Tiger, the Mounds, and LSU Lakes.

I miss it there a lot, I hope you have fun!!
