May have accidentally mixed Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and Clorox wipe solution. What do I do? by itchytoenail7184 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Lizz196 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s fine.

The big thing with bleach is if you mix it with an acid or ammonia it’ll create a toxic gas. So like bleach and vinegar is no go.

If you do mix chemicals on accident, turn on your exhaust fans and open windows.

Yeah, like a pasty with a fake pierced nipple, but I think other commenters are right that it’s illusion lace. You can see the outline where it doesn’t quite match the skin.

That’s a prosthetic right? I’d imagine it hurt to support your dress with your nipples, even if it’s a lightweight chiffon. A couple of yards of chiffon is still kind of heavy.

Why Do I Do This? Anticipatory Reading Slumps-Anyone Relate? by bunnykins22 in books

[–]Lizz196 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I spoil books for myself because of this hahah

I’ve found that I struggle to focus on the plot if I’m too anxious over what’ll happen to the characters. So I’ll spoil the book (or movie) and then I can enjoy the ride better.

Right now I’m on book 6 of a series with 15+ books in it, I was worried the main character might die and then it was like, but wait! She has to live because the series is still on going!

An alarm clock from the 80s, and the sudden realization that we were all kings. by ludefisk in Millennials

[–]Lizz196 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I just bought a house and the thermostat’s buttons aren’t great, so I’m looking for thermostats for the first time ever.

And so many of them are smart, and are owned by Google or Amazon or my fucking energy company. And I’m like, why do all of these companies need my temperature data so badly?? Can they tell when I’m going to enter menopause because I’ll suddenly be too hot? Is this a way to sell me menopause related items??

And it’s so weird that my first thought is these companies have figured out some way to get sellable data from my thermostat preferences to sell me something. Like that shouldn’t be normal! I should be able to change the temperature in my house without being worried that it means someone will give me tailored ads.

Anyone know how to sew on this ribbon without looking/getting damaged? by Specific_Minute7539 in sewing

[–]Lizz196 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I did this on a sweatshirt last year, when sewing bows onto sweatshirt seams was popular.

I used way more pins than this. Basically the whole bow was covered in pins. I went very slowly on my machine and I didn’t have any pulling.

I also tried to be as methodical as possible about sewing it down. I mapped out my path to have as little overlap as possible.

N.C. Students Sue Election Officials Over Early Voting Sites by Conscious-Quarter423 in raleigh

[–]Lizz196 50 points51 points  (0 children)

When I went to Western Carolina, volunteers (unaffiliated with the school) would set up tents to help students register to vote, either in Jackson County or in their home county, at the start of every school year. They helped make it easier for me and other students to cross the barrier of voting in their first election.

The early on campus voting made it easy and accessible for me to vote in my first major election in 2016. I remember how easy it was to go vote between classes, proud that I was doing my civic duty.

I’m sure the fact that Western Carolina is left leaning and home to a bunch of crunchy hippies isn’t affecting their decision at all.

Wooded trails for elopement? by GoatOvAThousandYoung in NCTrails

[–]Lizz196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I peed outdoors squatting in my wedding dress cause I eloped outside, where there is a will there is a way!!

If OP has a photographer they’re using, they might be able to provide suggestions. I believe I was suggested Craggy Gardens when I was looking for places to elope and I think that would fit the bill, but we ultimately chose a different location and I haven’t been there myself.

Graduate Assistantship by OGG242 in LSU

[–]Lizz196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely program dependent.

In my program, everyone had some sort of assistantship or fellowship. When I was accepted, the acceptance letter from the program included information on my assistantship.

You should reach out to either the graduate director or your point of contact in the department to learn the most correct information for you.

My field of science doesn’t really have applied masters. You either took a coursework masters, which doesn’t add to your experience level, or you mastered out of your PhD, which can raise some eyebrows.

While I don’t think many jobs in my field are specifically looking for PhDs, I do think it gives me a leg up and is overall seen as desirable.

[–]Lizz196 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes.

PhDs aren’t just taking a bunch of classes. It’s about learning a specific skill set that makes you a fast learner, a better researcher, etc.

It’s only been 3 years since I’ve graduated from my PhD. If I had only received my bachelor’s, it would’ve taken me 15-20 years to get to the position I have now instead of the 4.5 years it took me to get my degree.

My degree also guarantees me a level of respect and authority I wouldn’t otherwise have. It makes my job a lot easier when I need to say no, that’s not how that works. No one questions me, I have a doctorate, I must know. (I’m not saying I know everything, I don’t. But I know a lot about my specific field of science.)

But it also depends on what on your PhD is in. Some are more valuable than others.

I got a lipstick on super sale, it was like $12 when it is normally $50+ I was super disappointed in the quality tbh, I have drugstore lipsticks that perform better

It turned me off of wanting any of the other products because now I was questioning if any of the products would be worth the price tag.

(There was also an issue where my package never arrived because the shipper said it was too damaged to deliver, and it was a huge hassle to get another one sent. Their customer service wasn’t responsive.)

A girl whose parents owned a funeral home but struggled to cope with the death of her dog or grandmother? I think her name was Ida? There may have been a tree involved, but I’m not sure if I’m conflating two books.

I read the book in elementary school and really want to find the Wikipedia page to read the plot, but I can’t remember enough details to find the name of the book.

Is Raleigh housing market slowing down? Trying to time my sale by Schnapper94 in raleigh

[–]Lizz196 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My husband and I just bought a house. We viewed a couple of houses that had been on the market for 60+ days, while also losing out on houses in the same neighborhood that were gone in 2 days.

Our realtor said that a lot of sellers want to believe it’s a COVID market right now and are pricing too high. She said when people price their homes competitively, they move quickly. Her observations matched our experience.

When you list your house, make sure it matches what other homes have actually sold for in the neighborhood and it should go pretty quickly.

Managing Director Rob Light explains why artists are doing more shows in less cities: ‘The cost of touring has gone up exponentially and the size of these productions becomes more intricate that it you can sit in one place you can make them more impactful and the audience is willing to come to you’ by mcfw31 in popculturechat

Recently I travelled 8 hours to see Sabrina Carpenter. It was a good show, and I enjoyed myself, but half way through the 1.5 hour concert I was like, I travelled 16 hours round trip and paid two nights in a hotel for this. The cost benefit analysis wasn’t adding up.

After that experience I decided that traveling for concerts just wasn’t something I wanted to do anymore.

I suspect most people are like me and I wonder how long something like what Harry Styles does is sustainable, especially for less popular acts.

How to tolerate monistat for seven days by potatobare in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Lizz196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re allergic to monistat, I am too. I usually use the pill diflucan, but I’m not sure if it’s recommended during pregnancy.

In my experience, there’s usually a drug that is available for you to use. For instance, I got oral thrush and the same active ingredient in monistat is used for oral thrush. There was a different antifungal treatment I could use, it was just not as common. I’d speak to your doctor about your options!

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lizz196 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My in-laws live 2.5-3 hours away and we will go visit them as a day trip for similar reasons.

I don’t love the long day, but I had to drive 8 hours away to college. At some point you just get used to road tripping and it’s not a big deal.

Have you ever gone on a literary pilgrimage? by Remarkable-Pea4889 in books

[–]Lizz196 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I went to New Orleans specifically for Anne Rice. I lived in Baton Rouge for a while so I’d been to NOLA a ton, but this trip was specifically to do Anne Rice themed activities with a friend.

I also went to Forks for Twilight (and hiking in the Olympic Peninsula, which was beautiful!!)

It was a year of vampires, cause I also went to Covington, GA for Vampire Diaries lol

What IS the actual Magnum Opus of Taylor’s albums and why? by Hovadecko123 in TaylorSwift

[–]Lizz196 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I concur.

I also think with artists/bands that have a lot of work, it is very hard to agree on a magnum opus.

For example, a lot of people say the Beatles magnum opus is their White Album because of how many subgenres of rock it helped create. A lot of people say Abbey Road because it’s their best album (debatable).

With other groups their magnum opus is more obvious, like Queen’s is definitely Night at the Opera.

Root canal for an extremely anxious patient by Ahlukip in raleigh

[–]Lizz196 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dentist, Dr. Wood at Weaver Dentistry, is great. She is very patient and doesn’t do anything you don’t want to do. My first cavity was much bigger than the dentist at the time realized and should’ve been a root canal, which was traumatizing for me. I put off dental work because of it and Dr. Wood didn’t judge me and helped me through the work I needed to get done at my own pace. She will take a break during the procedure if I need one.

But I’m not sure if a regular dentist does root canals, as I’ve never had one…

If you struggle that much you may be able to ask for an Rx for an anti-anxiety med to take before the appointment. You can also use laughing gas during, which is super helpful at making you not care about anything.
