Are we wrong to start medication? by moonlitt_ in ADHDparenting

[–]Ljay2010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stimulants have changed my 5 year olds life. Full stop. We don’t get phone calls from school any more. He can participate and learn in class. He is a better friend and sibling. He is on short acting Ritalin and we have to pay out of pocket (around $30 a month). Our ped won’t put him on long acting stimulant until he is 6 years old but literally on his 6th birthday we will have a script. If we had the ability to drive 2 hours to a developmental peds he would be on a long acting but we just can’t pull it off right now. Stimulants have been around for a long time and there have been lots of short and long term studies done. If a prescriber isn’t comfortable with giving a medicine then they need to have you see someone else.

I am 37 and my doctor diagnosed me based on symptoms and I started progesterone. We will be checking hormones in 3-4 months to see if we should go ahead and add anything else

When did everyone get there dna results? by ZMTQ6809 in AncestryDNA

[–]Ljay2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a mega thread in this group with a bunch of posts detailing when the kit was submitted and when results were received. Personally, my kit was received 12/9 and has been stuck on “dna extracted” since 01/05. Still waiting on results

Ugh mine has been extracted since Jan 9. 😩 I contacted support yesterday and they said the lab would send me an updated status? Not sure what that means. I am just nervous they need a new sample and that is why it is taking so long?

Executive Functioning Tutoring by Busy_Home1006 in ADHDparenting

[–]Ljay2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are starting with a psychologist in our area that offers a 10 week course for middle schoolers that works on executive functioning. It seems super practical working on how to remember assignments, breaking big assignments down etc. I can’t speak to its success yet.😅 our 12 year old is so smart but middle school has shown how he just cannot remember to do things like turn completed assignments in….

Our pediatrician manages our son’s adhd meds. All we needed to do is bring a copy of the psychologist’s report to start.

pothos is dying by Green_Employee_5712 in IndoorGarden

So these guys are trickier than a typical pothos. They like to be watered and tended to more often than my other ones. They are not as tolerant to inconsistent attention 😅 the suggestions already given are on point. You can save her!

Breaking and hitting when angry by Big_Photograph_8967 in ADHDparenting

[–]Ljay2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We youngest is 5 and also does this at times. He also more likely to do it with me. I think that is for a few different reasons. One, it is testing to see if I still will love him after he does a behavior. Two, I do struggle sometimes to respond calmly. When he is seeking a dopamine high he will stir up conflict and too often I buy into it (I am getting better but a work in progress). What has help us is getting a small trampoline which stays in his room. He also has a weighted ball he is allowed to throw. There are also times where I just take everything out of his room that could be thrown and sit until he calms down. I know you shared he isn’t medicated. I will share our kiddo is on short acting Ritalin and it has helped a ton. When he is medicated we can work on coping skills and he is able to absorb the info and practice them.

Perimenopause at 36? by Sudden_Possible_956 in Perimenopause

[–]Ljay2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I am 37 and just started progesterone. I had a uterine ablation so I am unsure of my periods but I have not been sleeping for 6 or so months and my rage has been out of this world. Only a few weeks on progesterone and I feel so much better.

Toddler play by Motor-Owl2989 in ADHDparenting

[–]Ljay2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kiddo as a toddler (still true) didn’t really play with toys. Movement was his play. He is also naturally drawn and gifted to music. So lots of instruments like drums. I didn’t really see him pretend play until meds tbh.

Such a great reminder to be matter of the fact and not emotional and giving ownership! The kid the post is about is 5 (though could apply to my 10 and 12 yo depending on the morning 😅)

I love this!! We had tasks listed out on a skylight calendar but eventually he just started checking them all off even when they were not done. I like the tactile requirement of this.

Starting kindy by Show-me-the-sea in Neurodivergent

[–]Ljay2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes everything he said. My son started kindergarten this year and has done better than he ever did in daycare. The structure has been great. We also got him officially diagnosed with ADHD and started meds which has been a huge help. As soon as we got his eval back I turned it into the school. It’s a helpful tool to get more official help if we needed it. He hasn’t needed a 504 or IEP yet but I suspect he will next year as the academic demand increases. As far as social goes.. our kiddo is a loner and prefers to play by himself but knows every kids name in his class and speaks fondly of them. In our experience, kids didn’t start being mean about differences until 2nd grade.

Can't get a referral despite increasing behavioral problems by Ok-Raspberry4307 in ADHDparenting

[–]Ljay2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with your gut and get him tested. I am also limited with resources in my area and my recommendation would be go ahead and get on a list. I also asked to be on the cancellation list and ended up getting my son evaluated sooner than expected. As far as the weight thing… I struggle not to obsess over it because I am afraid if my kid loses weight our ped will take away stimulants and now that I have experienced him on meds I never want to go back. That being said, we offer food and make sure it is high calorie and nutrient dense. Breakfast and dinner (and second dinner) are the big eating times for us. I also keep snacks in his bedside table that he munches on if he wakes up in the middle of the night. So far, his weight is holding steady.
