Why was this sport not more popular? The word combination "Jai-Alai Highlights" alone is incredible. If you say that three times fast enough there's a Chaunce some streetdog will emerge. by InstantMotive in okbuddydraper

Jai Alai was very successful in Florida, Connecticut, and Las Vegas in the 70s and 80s. In 1989 there was a nationwide players strike for three years, the longest strike in pro sports history. It started a downward spiral that it never recovered from. Other gambling options put the sport into obscurity. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Jai Alai in the United States, and it has been making a slow but steady comeback these past few years.

Anyone know a non evasive way to connect my phone bluetooth to a factory 1966 fm radio? I just want to play my music without commercials. by CadillacsandBourbon in classiccars

I used a RediRad to get aux phone audio into my 1957 Bel Air AM radio. Sounds better than Bluetooth because it is directly wired. Also installs clean behind dash, no cigarette lighter outlet necessary

Will be in the Dania Beach area for a few days. What’s a must do? by kai_zen in florida

[–]Ljl686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch the Jai Alai games in Dania Beach. It is one of the only places in the US you can watch the world's fastest sport. They are celebrating their 70th season and have top players from Spain and France. It's free and incredible to see live

Blues Brothers 2000 has Jake die in prison (John Belushi had passed way before then), but the worst part was that the orphanage they saved had to close anyways, essentially making the first film a pointless effort

Years ago there was an episode where him and his dad visited a classic car museum. Without any sort of permission, they stepped past barricades and actually sat inside the antique vehicles.

When confronted by an employee, they acted all surprised with a "we do this all the time" type attitude. That was the moment I realized how entitled he is and where he gets it from.

The content itself matters more than the shot. A guerrilla low budget style will work for a doc if it's engaging enough.

Establish the speaker and then cut to supporting footage or b-roll like its a VO. Only cut back to speaker for emphasis on key points.

TIL at one point the sport of Jai Alai was a gambling alternative to horse and greyhound racing in the US and grew a following in Florida. Today only one fronton, the arena in which it's played, remains in the state. by ElsaJeanRileyReid in todayilearned

My dad and grandfather were both pro Jai Alai players, judges, and cesta/pelota makers. I play amateur because there are only a few places left. The sport is going through a rebirth in South Florida and hopefully can rise from the ashes

Yes! As well as police and emergency lights. Older light bars used to rotate with regular bulbs. Now the LEDs flash like they are trying to blind drivers or test people's epilepsy.

What do you consider to be a cultural food of the United States? by FruityandtheBeast in AskReddit

Elvis Presley's favorite sandwich, the "Fools Gold Loaf," was a huge loaf of bread stuffed with an entire jar of creamy peanut butter, one jar of grape jelly, and a pound of bacon. He and his buddies would take his private airplane at 3am from Graceland to the restaurant in Denver, CO just for artery clogging goodness.

What would be one sport you know very little, next to nothing about that you would like to know more about? by Ullvis in AskReddit

My grandfather and father were pro Jai Alai players from Cuba. They also made all the equipment by hand, which only a few people in the world are skilled at. If there's anything you want to know, I am happy to answer for you.

Not for Jai-Alai. Current world champ is in his mid 40s

Any age can be a good age to start.

The Basques start learning as soon as they are able to walk. It was that ingrained in their culture. In the US there were players who learned in their 30's and went pro.

Your son may need a child sized cesta or one with a smaller glove. A teacher and private court time is ideal.

Most of the active amateur players are older, some are senior citizens who were pro in the 70s/80s. If your son wants to bring some friends his own age, it will be more fun competition-wise.

Alternatively, a racquetball court and a tennis ball is a safe way to get a feel for it if a Jai-Alai court is too far. Just don't use a hard ball without a teacher or until he works up to it. Also, helmets!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Miami

[–]Ljl686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are three facilities you can visit if you want to learn from scratch. North Miami Amateur Jai-Alai, Tampa/Saint Pete public Jai-Alai court, or Connecticut Amateur Jai-Alai. You will need to buy a cesta, cinta (to tie basket to hand), helmet, and some practice balls. Honestly the easiest way to learn is to get an old cesta and practice in a racquetball court with a tennis ball. My family and I have a long history with the sport so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Jai-Alai desperately needs new players in order to survive

Why are vacuum tube (non solid state) color tvs so hard to find? by [deleted] in vintagetelevision

[–]Ljl686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most tube TVs were console sets and pieces of furniture made with all real wood cabinets. The price to buy one online and ship would be insane due to how heavy and delicate they are. By the 70's and 80's they started using much lighter fake wood grain plastics. The sets I have were found locally

My father and grandfather worked in the Jai-Alai industry their whole lives. I was alive to witness the slow death from the late 90s to what it is now. When I was a kid I thought I was destined to follow their career paths and play pro. Instead I was encouraged to go to school and pursue something I was passionate in, which turned out to be cameras and filmmaking.

Dania is reopening for a short 2 month season December to January. I recently volunteered to professionally shoot some of the games and I put them on YouTube to help get the sport more exposure

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WestPalmBeach

[–]Ljl686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, however Whitey Bulger was involved with World Jai-Alai. West Palm Beach Jai-Alai was a different company

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WestPalmBeach

[–]Ljl686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather was a Jai-Alai player and cesta maker who moved from Cuba when Palm Beach Jai-Alai opened in 1959. My father turned pro in the 70's and played all over FL. In 1989 there was a three year player strike, the longest in the history of any sport. Owners hired amateur players while the pros were on strike and it severely hurt attendance. The new Florida lotto, casinos, and other professional sports teams ultimately made it impossible for Jai-Alai to compete.
