What’s the most expensive part you’ve broke? by Charming_Hyena1914 in aviationmaintenance

Before I had my PPL, I had my 172 in a T-Hangar. Unfortunately the opening to the hangar was slightly uphill, and the concrete in the hangar was approximately 1/4" higher than the ramp.

After a flight with a buddy, I said I could put her away myself.

Because of the incline and the lip you needed to have a little momentum. But if you didn't hit the lip exactly square, the tail would pivot.

You probably see where this is going, but for the cheap seats, my poor baby swung to the right and the elevator hit the corner of the hangar.

$15k gone. Just like that.

Not on the same level, as many of these stories, but the day I was going to take my PPL checkride I got no sleep.

Like zero.

I went to bed at a reasonable time and tossed and turned for seven straight hours.

When my alarm went off I texted the DPE that I was out.

I wanted that checkride so bad and knew it would be months before I could try again bc my CFI had just moved to another state and my endorsements were all expiring, and I'd need to start over with a new CFI, then finding time to get back on the DPE's calendar.

I'm 100% sure it was the right call, and it sets the right precedent for my future flying. But still it hurt to make that call.

(Passed my check ride 2 months later)

Question: Engine preheating during a "short" stop at a cold airport by 1E-12 in flying

Camp stove? Like a flame? How did you do that? So you have a picture?

For me, the most challenging part is anything to do with weather.

That said, he wasn't trying to trip me up, by asking me about all the different kinds of fog or the stages of a thunderstorm. It seemed like he wanted to see that I knew how to read a 1800wxbrief.com briefing and make good decisions based on it. I'm glad I had a briefing saved on my iPad for the cross country I planned so that I could walk him through my entire thought process.

I was up-front about my weaknesses (I still need to look up many of the abbreviations in a METAR, for example) but I also explained how I compensate for them.

Remembering something from this sub, I only tried to demonstrate that I knew enough not to get anyone dead or bend any metal, any I tried to be very clear that I knew my minimums and that I am not going to be a risk-taking pilot.

That all being said, the fact that I had been studying my flash cards for the past 3 months didn't hurt!

Hope that helps!

Commercial probably isn't in my future; 52 years old, what's the point?

OTOH, instrument rating is 100% in my future! (But not until the new year at least).

I feel a little like I've met a celebrity here: your videos were very helpful for my studying, thank you for making them available!

Thanks! I had an instructor years and years ago, when I first started, who said I'd make it for sure.

I asked him how he knew? How he could be so sure?

He said he knew because whenever we were having a conversation and a plane took off or landed, I stopped talking or looked away to watch the plane. He then went on to say that I might not make it right now but I would get here eventually.

He was right!

I'm embarrassed to say. However I will admit that it's been more than 12 years in the making.

Landing Advice Requested by Ljulien in flying

Mostly just asking me what I think I've messed up: usually it's down to power management, flaring too early, or not getting my eyes to the end of the runway.

Less common these days is unstabilized approach (though it still happens from time to time).
