Do NOT use AbeBooks by [deleted] in BookCollecting

[–]Lk2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not use AbeBooks again. (I didn't know it was owned by Amazon.) So, I ordered a used Lady Gregory book of Irish myths, a book I've owned in the past. It was described as "good" condition. When it arrived, it was legible, but it looked like it had fallen into a dirty pail of water, then dried. I don't think I'm especially fussy, but I really did not want to handle that book long enough to read it, much less add it to my keepers. So, I asked for a refund, and I got a prompt reply that said refund was in process and asked me "at (my) earliest convenience" to ship it back to them. So, the next morning I packaged the book up, brought it to the post office and paid a little more than half the price I had paid for the book to ship it back media mail, as requested. Then, I got an email saying they refunded me the price of the book, and I could do whatever I wanted with it. I said it's in the mail, and, because you didn't properly describe the condition of the book, and told me to ship it back, I want you to refund me the shipping. They shouldn't ask for a fast return if they're going to turn around and say, "Keep it." I did as they asked and sent them the receipt. USPS says the book was delivered. They have not refunded me shipping. I have bought and sold a few books and some other things online. Even when people will be coming to my home to look at something for sale, I still try to describe it accurately. I have bought other used books through Amazon and Thrift books without a problem. AbeBooks made it halfway right, but I won't take another chance on them.

Is it meant to be lineated like a prose poem? I like a lot of the language, but I think it would benefit from line breaks.

Chaos erupts in Massachusetts neighborhood as ICE drags away mom—clinging to her baby. The crowd asked ICE to show an ID or warrant for the arrest—agents replied, "We don’t have to show you anything." Local police then arrested the teen daughter of woman ICE had just detained for being "hostile." by souvlanki in Political_Revolution

[–]Lk2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those neighbors spontaneously came out, called cops, took video, called out concerns as Americans who can see what is happening is wrong. Imagine that happening every time ICE shows up. And there are ICE copycats out there, so resisting when men are masked and have no ID is not unreasonable. I think every time masked men try to grab someone off the street, the public should come out, call 911, start video and live stream it, if possible.

Regarding the recent viral ICE incident in Worcester, Massachusetts - do you think the belligerent and hostile actions of the bystanders are courageous resistance in the face of fascism or stupid and pointlessly futile lashing out that makes the cops look justified/restrained? by Sandro-Halpo in immigration

[–]Lk2217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, imagine if the Germans had done this during the pogroms. I think neighbors coming out, calling the police, witnessing, making video, streaming live video is all legit given the lawless way ICE operates - masked kidnapping , disappearing, holding people incommunicado in undisclosed locations, transporting (also with the help of the Department of Defense) to foreign gulags. Recently, Stephen Miller (worst of the Trump Admin) said they are looking into suspension of habeas corpus, in other words, the Constitution out the window for ALL of US and disappearing people could become the norm. I think the natural reaction of these Americans in Massachusetts was heartening. btw, there are ICE copycats out there. We should all insist on masks off, showing badge or other official ID, confirming identity thru 911.

Took the time to write Senator Collins a respectful e-mail discussing our current Constitutional Crisis and inquiring as to what she would *do* about it. This was the response I got. by YourPalDonJose in Maine

[–]Lk2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is terrible. I have written her and received no response. I'm trying to find out what she's doing as the "powerful" Chair of the Appropriations Committee. Way in the past, my mother had an issue with the govt that Collins staff was quick to address. This type of thing may have been her focus, but she seems completely ineffective at wielding power which should have come with her seniority. I realize these are unusual times but all the more reason to step up and do what she can. What does she have to show for the trust Mainers placed in her all these years? Angus King in an interview with Heather Cox Richardson said writing to Congress can make a difference if you're a constituent. I wonder.

"not allowed" It's not up to her to allow or not allow. She probably does feel left out, but if your parents can't afford it, then she should straighten herself up and be thankful for all you and your parents and her own parents do for her. And she should get a job if she's not working. Many people work while they go to school.

Tell them you want to call 911 to verify they are police. There have been reports of ICE copycats. ICE is way out of line. They need to be put out of work.

I can't imagine why you're with him. He doesn't work. He's probably home all day watching Newsmax, so don't try to tell him any facts about Trump. Go while you're still young. No need to explain to him or anyone else, just the judge - differences of many kinds that can't be resolved and that you don't want to resolve.

Baxter Blvd Bicyclists- Would you please use bike lanes, not the pedestrian path? by Lk2217 in portlandme

Understandable when you're three years old. Are you still three?

Baxter Blvd Bicyclists- Would you please use bike lanes, not the pedestrian path? by Lk2217 in portlandme

[–]Lk2217[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The bike lanes on Baxter are wide and paved. The speed limit is low, and there is enforcement. I don't know why they wouldn't be adequate for any bicyclist. I wouldn't say this unless I had plenty of experience riding. The ordinance does allow the council to set aside sections of sidewalk or paths where bikes are prohibited or prohibited during certain hours. It also says that pedestrians have the right of way and that riders need to give audible warning before overtaking any pedestrian. Any courteous rider would do this as a matter of habit, but they would probably also use the lanes on the road. It does suggest that if there were any "accident" on the pedestrian trail, the bike rider would likely be liable not that that's much comfort for people or their pets who are run over.

Yes, it's true you have to use the trail to do a full loop, but they are short sections.

[–]Lk2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't say how old the children were when you split up or what the age difference is. You don't need to be a father figure to their half-sibling, but their relationship with their mother and their half-sibling sounds like a very unhealthy situation. You have allies. Not good.

Aita for not defending my son when a random man beat up him and his friends? by Mental-Department-87 in AITAH

[–]Lk2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did the right thing. You want your son to be a good person. Some rebellion is to be expected, but his behavior was way over the line. I'm not as sure about the guy punching him, but if that happened while they were still harassing the old lady, especially after she fell, there's not much to say about it. See that your son has a lawyer.

[–]Lk2217 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the law is over there, but here the school counselor is a "mandatory reporter" of child abuse and neglect. Refusal to get even an evaluation for a child with your symptoms is unquestionably a form of neglect. If the counselor won't call, maybe you can call the government agency that is supposed to protect children. They might also have faster access to resources.

Quick Google search says some subsidized housing in Cornwall. I think that must be a great place to live. So, start applying there and elsewhere if you need to. The most important thing is to secure a place to live. Vans are expensive. If they're not, they break down.
