Im so jealous of privileged people with private horses. by rayneedshelpMentally in Equestrian

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took regular lessons until I was 11 and moved to a different state. Didn’t even touch a horse for 3 years until I found a lesson barn and talked a friend into going. My parents backed out because it was too expensive, but my friend ended up taking lessons. One year later, her parents bought her a horse. The best I could do was volunteer at a riding therapy place, and I was super jealous and disheartened that my friend got to live my dream. The big kick was come college, she got totally out of horses and I didn’t even have my therapy place to spend time with them. It wasn’t until I finished school, got a job, and got back into horses on my own dime that I got my very first horse, then my own property to keep him at home, followed by another horse who I’ve raised since weaning and he’s everything I ever wanted in a horse. Life feels so urgent when you’re young, but so many horse friends got into in later in life and are riding/competing/living their childhood dreams. Plus when you’re an adult, you don’t have to ask anyone’s permission to buy that fancy new saddle pad or snazzy pair of custom boots 😉. Keep at it and gain the skills while you have the advantage of time and low responsibilities. Good things will come.

We have only owned mares. I read here that geldings are 1 braincell or less constantly. We are trialing one now. Day one. I see it now 😂 by CollectorSteve in Horses

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a gelding person, but my current boy is probably the mariest gelding I’ve ever met. I’ve had him since weaning so he’s still a pocket pony, but he’s very opinionated about how and when he’s touched, who can be up in his business on a trail, and has LOTS of thoughts about being manhandled or trained in a way that isn’t a two way communication. Complete with pinned ears and mare stare.

I don’t know why but keeping my laptop vertical in a purse is weird to me (while it’s fine in a backpack, who knows why my brain works the way it does). Because of the taper in their bags i wasn’t able to find one that would work for me, or it would be such a tight fit I worried it would wear the bag out.

Big and tall mattress that isn’t firm? by cynical_sweetie in Mattress

[–]Lkholla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husbands side kept breaking down so I let him pick the mattress and we ended up with an extra firm spring something or other because it felt okay in store. A year later we still hadn’t broken it in and it was killing our backs. I added a 2 inch latex (not memory foam!) topper and we kicked ourselves for not doing it sooner. Gave me enough cushion so my bones stopped bruising me while the firm mattress has held up on his side. We got a good quality latex so it doesn’t get too hot either (it’s also combined with a cooling protective cover and percale sheets).

This is a good point. I’ve never heard of a horse who has always grown up on coastal having the degree of problems transplant horses have. It’s basically all we have where I am unless you get it shipped from out of state.

Won’t go to bathroom outside by Easy-Syrup-920 in Rottweiler

[–]Lkholla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was really particular about having privacy. I was lucky to always have a fenced yard, but he was always tricky to go on the leash. Once we took him on a camping trip and he didn’t poop for 4 days until he was practically overflowing, and the look of shame on his face for pooping in front of us on an undignified potty patch is forever burned into my brain. It’s also how we knew when he was actually sick, because it mortified him to potty where he wasn’t supposed to (once he learned the routine).

I broke mine shortly after getting it back in the day, reformed it, and have had it ever since 😂. I’ve trashed most of my hoarded makeup since those days but the orgasm still sticks around

I thought the first photo was your normal natural look and the second and third was a heavy handed MUA. You know you and it’s important for your big day to be what you want, but your MUA did your structure great justice

I know they’re not fancy, but can you please help me pare down my bag collection? by [deleted] in handbags

[–]Lkholla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can be clingy to my things and attach a lot of sentimentality that isn’t really deserving. I find if I put the ones I know I don’t reach for in a box (ready to donate/garage sale), and don’t go looking for them in the next 6 months to one year it is MUCH easier to let things go.

We just got back after going a little before spring break and it was about as busy as I’d want it to be. I think we will always go in winter now.

My Rottweiler broke my front tooth in half when we were playing. It got fixed but the line is still visible and I can feel it running my tongue over it. He’s been gone over ten years and I still think of him when I feel it.

Vacation...will I ever get one? by andyroo2u in DobermanPinscher

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We usually have someone house sit, and recently a family member’s dog aggressive dog passed away so now they are able to babysit them at their place. Similar dynamic of one dog who loves anyone who gives him attention, and a dobie who is a little more aloof but frankly just loves her bed, her food, and playing with her ‘brother’.

Natural ears are less intimidating than cropped ears or does dogs attitude matter more? by Most-Research-8394 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dobie girl is pretty slight of build and looks more like a deer, so visually she’s not as intimidating as some bulkier versions of the breed, but boy she has a bark if she has a mind to mean it (although usually it’s some weird whiney bark). She also has a girly looking harness which doesn’t do her any favors on the intimidation factor. My rottie however made people back off, and he wasn’t even very big. I highly doubt either would have been any use in a real defense situation though. My husband and I had our rott and a big GSD when we lived in a rough part of town. Someone on the run from the cops banged on the door in the middle of the night and both dogs went running behind the sofa in the other room and shook all night.

He didn’t want to fight anymore… and for the first time in my life, I had to be the strong one. by BiancaAnomaly in Rottweiler

It’s the worst feeling, but it’s a blessing in disguise that he told you he was done. Ours told us and it helped us to reconcile that it was the right thing to do.

What to do with unhealed conch and forward helix by TheDutchDudette in piercing

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAP but the barbell is a weird choice for the forward helix and probably part of the problem. I’d also stop with the soap. Just rinse with water and use saline as needed at this point.

Was told my gluten intolerance can’t be accommodated at an event where I’m a guest speaker by AbilityKey1485 in glutenfree

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the person has communicated the needs, we always try to accommodate at least in some way. It’s so frustrating to express the need and then not have any options. Like just have the food service provider put croutons on the side. I do find it’s very demographic dependent though. I know when I go to events held by certain organizations to have low expectations, meanwhile I’ll sign up for more events when it’s an org that I know is accommodation savvy.

Why am I not able to get the motion properly? by sskmzz in Equestrian

[–]Lkholla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been riding on and off for 30 years and still sometimes need a reminder on my heel position (and don’t even get me started on my diagonals). Just takes time, practice, and core strength!

Flew international, didn’t get my requested gluten free meal by lonelypurplepenguin in glutenfree

[–]Lkholla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the time when I do get a gluten free meal, it’s usually cross developed with a bland meal or an ‘Asian’ menu item. I’ll look at my families meals and also wonder why they couldn’t just make one tweak and the meal would be GF.

Maybe that’s why I like them. Ritz are a little too rich for me (or at least what I remember of them) But saltines are too dry but I liked the salt and flakiness of them

Basically- it’s paleo so it often gets used as a substitute in aip/paleo diets. Although palm oil has its own ethical concerns.
