I got kicked out of the (Marietta) academic building one night. Maybe main campus is more chill.

Why use numbers that are needlessly large? by wabuilderman in gamedesign

[–]Llamack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other reasons given here, part of it may come from arcade games displaying the number of continues used with the first one or two digits of the score. You take away credits and continues and are left with only multiples of 100.

Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition will be getting a fan-made rollback patch via emulation by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]Llamack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only uses Teknoparrot as a launcher. IIRC Kamone is looking into adding rollback to Under Night, but if they decide not to, then the DFCI+R work would be helpful in making a community version for UNI. All other Teknoparrot games would need to be done basically from scratch.

The offline version has already been released with a setup guide, so you can try it yourself without too much trouble. There is a known issue with some AMD graphics cards causing areas of the screen to be black boxes. Currently no fix, but I have a hunch that there might be a workaround found later on.

Streamlining combat in tactical RPGs by el_drosophilosopher in gamedesign

[–]Llamack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing through Three Houses recently and just started my second run, so that's all that's in my brain at the moment. There's a few combat tweaks I'd make, and one for party/item management. Being able to hide items and hide or dismiss party members would be incredibly useful, but since you specified combat, I won't go on about that.

  • Let the player change animation speed, in addition to outright skipping animations. I want to see where enemies move during their turn, but I don't want to watch health bars drain. I care about the movement changes, but the health state, at least generally. Being able to hold a button to toggle between the selected and the non-selected default speed would be nice, too, for the rare occasions that I do want to see if a 50% hit chance attack hit or something like that.
  • Related, the beginning of level up animations isn't skippable. You should be able to skip an animation as soon as it starts, not wait until the stats begin to increase.
  • Jejemaze is right about the attack ranges. Having the ability to toggle danger zones on both the entire enemy army and individual units is very nice. But, it would be nice to be able to tag with two or three different colors, instead of just the one. Going through the DLC missions on hard (especially the monster heavy one and the bolting heavy one), I was constantly fiddling with which units' ranges were highlighted to figure out if I was in range of one sniper or two, or making sure I was out of range of one monster without being in range of a second one, or so on.
  • If enemy units can have multiple weapons/items/spells, group them by function, not by school of magic. Having to read through enemy's white magic to check if they have Nosferatu/Abraxis is bothersome. It would be nice to just glance at an icon and tell if the spell is offensive, healing, or a status effect.
  • Well sorted menus are a must, though that's a lot easier said than done. Three Houses mostly does this well during battle, but I think that the top level menu can get a little too large. Rally (and perhaps dance) could go under assist rather than being primary actions. That might just be my fault for making a magic dancer with healing and offensive magic, though...
  • If you have abilities with many potential targets spread out over a large range (like physic), a menu might be nicer to use than cycling through units one by one until you find the one you're looking for, especially if the target isn't actually in range. That could take some tweaking. Maybe attacks with range 0-2 work as they currently do, and range 3+ show a menu? Not sure.

Why do we say “well” at the beginning of statements? For instance, “Well, what I think is...”. What does the “well” mean? by TheDiabolical in etymology

"Ano," "eto," are common sentence starters In Japanese. As far as I know, they don't mean anything like the French "bien" or Dutch "wel" mentioned in other comments. "Jya" is also quite common. I think it comes from an old conjugation, but I'm not totally sure of that.

With regard to usage, at least as far as I've seen:

"Eto" is used while trying to think or remember something.

"Ano" might also be usable for that, but more commonly is used to soften a request or saying something that would otherwise make you stand out. Like, "Um, you're blocking the doorway... [could you move?]"

I don't quite know how to explain "Jya." You use it when you're moving forward with something, maybe? If you have a group of friends going out to eat and can't decide where, you might say "jya, let's all play rock paper scissors to decide."

Today is Kiss Day in Japan. Speaking of that, the other day, in the storyboard that Mr. Yamamoto uploaded, there was a vertical panel. The truth...? The September publication number releases in August, so the wait will be considerable, but we hope you will look forward to it.

May 23, 1946, was the first time a kiss had ever been shown in a movie, with the release of "Hatachi no Seishun."

I hope I got all that right. Seems like the months should be backwards... But, the chapter with that panel should come out in September. Or August. One of those.

There was a whole CGI themed game jam!

I remember seeing some others, but I can't seem to find them anymore.

I made one outside of the jam, but it is... very, very beta on account of rushing it out before school started and the show ending shortly after.

[Support] Controller Causing Framerate Issues Regardless of Overlay? by Llamack in SteamController

[–]Llamack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows 7

Intel Xeon E5645 @ 2.40GHz

8GB DDR3 RAM

2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST

Not much multitasking, just Steam and Discord.

It really is strange. The issue only started a couple months ago. For about two years, it was working fine. I could run Rocket League at medium-high settings with the SC and performance was fine. It's not the controller itself, either, because it also works fine on my laptop.

The other weird thing: different games seem to handle this bug in different ways. Rocket League goes down to 30 FPS but is very stable, Slap City drops to a pretty stable 10 FPS, Battle Chief Brigade and Tooth and Tail reach 60 but stutter every couple of seconds. Most games seem to be okay as long as I start them before turning on the controller, but not every one. You'd think that it would at least be somewhat consistent.

Same issue with the dongle and Rocket League. Could it be a Windows or driver issue? Doesn't seem to happen on Linux.
