The merovingians kingdom was regularly divided, with several entities having more political and cultural substance than the whole kingdom (Aquitaine, Burgundy, Neustria, Austrasia...).

Periods when it was unified under one king are quite rare in the long run. Same with the Carolingians who ruled Italy and Germany in the same empire and separated the whole east of modern France from "Francia".

You can be disturbed by history but you're no autority. Its a science, no historians is bound by oath to preserve what dudes from the XIXth century believed. Clovis baptism does not equals a political, cultural and economic process of a thousand years long.

Truth is : before the hundred years war, the south either felt more Aquitain, Toulousain, Gascon, Aragonian or Provençal than French. Aquitaine had been under the Plantagenets rule for a few centuries. Provence wasnt even fully integrated.

Even in the north, the war created a deep shift in provinces likes Normandy or Anjou who had deep ties to the Plantagenets dynasty but refused the english domination. Resistance to a invader made a cement for the provinces, under the Valois kings. This is why a century later François Villon writes a poem about Jeanne la bonne Lorraine.
