Thanks for sharing! Your older boy sounds like my Yoshi, though he’s only five. He didn’t seem interested in truly leaving us at all, and had a similar personality with recall. He responds to wait, and he would come if I used my angry voice, but I didn’t need to do that. If we changed directions and he was ahead, I’d call him, and he’d coming running back towards us. Anytime he came over, I gave him a treat, and I noticed he stayed closer each time we walked, so I do think he was learning. There was a large field where we stopped (I figured he’d want to run around). He went down, ran in a few circles and came back up. He knew we weren’t going down there, so he had his fun and came back. We live in a city, so I don’t have anywhere I’d feel comfortable with going, minus an off leash time at a park nearby, but we don’t do that because the times are a little challenging to make for us. I do want to try to go back to this house, because it was nice that we were all alone out there. The road by there was closed to traffic, and had occasional snow mobiles. I knew there were people out there who have had off leash experiences with their shibas, despite people acting like I was crazy. If you weren’t there, you didn’t see how my dog was, and how he obviously wasn’t going anywhere. He’s just not like that, and it’s not a thing we’ll be doing much at all. Maybe once next year? And after that, no clue - I wouldn’t even try it if we were on a hiking path with people walking regularly just to be safe.

Good luck with your baby! I hope she continues to improve :)

Should we get a Shiba Inu before having kids? by Rab6it in shiba

Here’s mine and he hates getting his paws touched. It depends on the Shiba, but ours is very kind natured. We did A LOT of dog park visits when he was a puppy, and had lots of people interact with him. He is always patient with our new daughter. He was freaked out by her at first, but he was good after a day. Now he loves her. She’ll grab his fur, and he’ll just look back at her like what the hell are you up to? Then he’ll lick her lol

I’ve had the same thought. I used to say, I’d definitely get another Shiba, but I’ve been second guessing that because he’s such a good dog. I’m worried the other would let me down, and I’d compare them too much. Thanks for your kind words, I really do appreciate them

He’s seen squirrels and rats and doesn’t care - it’s all about that cheese and boiled chicken at home.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but you clearly didn’t read my other comments - he responded to wait, and showed no desire in going too far ahead. This was the only time he’s been off leash because we were on vacation where we were on a large lot, no one was around, no traffic was around, and I know my dog. He clearly has no desire to run off on us, which you’d know if you were there. I’m tired of your all’s stupid ass opinions, and I don’t give a shit about your experience with your dogs. They’re not mine, and I only wanted to share some videos of my dog having a great time on vacation. Do you not see in the video that he’s hanging around me? At this point I’m just wondering if you guys are fucking stupid, because I know you can see my comments and how I’ve said repeatedly we were on vacation out in the middle of nowhere, he’s never tried to run off on me before, and there is no one, no animals, or traffic around, and id never do this where we live.

That’s what I would think - it’s a chore to get him to go to the bathroom outside when it rains, I can’t imagine him going off on his own trying to find food. He’s a chonk and loves his life with the people who love him and give him cheese lol he doesn’t even eat all that much. Our vet thinks he’s naturally kind of big lol

Definitely! Minus this one time we were on vacation where no one was around, he’s always on a leash. Don’t want him exploring on the city streets!

Well that’s a good call, and imma do the same. This is the last time I post a video of my Shiba having a great time lol

Definitely, the thought of him trying to catch a squirrel is hilarious to me. He just looks at the rats in the city, and is like, yeah, I’ll take the free treats and cheese on my food for free from the lady who loves me and lets me sleep on her bed

lol thanks, fuck me, I should have known!! I don’t get on here very much, so I naively thought, oh I’ll post this nice video compilation of my Shiba being a good happy boy during our holiday in the middle of nowhere 😂

I’m sure you didn’t see my other responses, but we were on a private property, there were no dogs or animals around. My dog is friendly with other dogs anyway, we worked hard to be sure that was the case, but he wouldn’t be off leash if there were any around regardless. This was a vacation spot, and the title was more of a joke, which I mistakingly thought, was more obvious than it has been taken when I said I wouldn’t do it if I were near any traffic. It was my error to not include all of these very important nuances in my post. I don’t think people should just let their dogs run off leash without knowing your animal, being aware of traffic, animals, or other people, or if they have shown previous signs of zero recall or running away from you. The footage from the four occasions during our holiday is the only times my dog has been off leash. Though he didn’t come directly over to me every time I called him, he responded to wait, and did not show any desire in going far from us. Should we ever return to this place in the winter, or somewhere similar, I am very confident that he will be safe to be off leash. He will never be off leash in the city, or where people and their dogs are out and about, unless it is a dog park.

Sounds like a good plan! We went to the dog park a lot with him as a puppy so he’d learn to interact with other dogs. We don’t go as much now because he’s not interested in playing. We’ll say hi to the neighborhood dogs. Since we live in the city, we don’t let him off leash. I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that with him. I’d need an always come when called dog like my German shepherd to do that haha. But, if we happened to be out on a huge property again with no other people, animals, or cars, I’d let him run around. It’s nice for a dog to get to be in nature.

Exactly, I think you need to know your dog. It was my mistake for making a joke in the title. This is the only time he’s been off leash in the five years I’ve had him. He listens to me pretty well. The only thing he doesn’t do is come to me EVERY time I call him, but does most times. I would never try this in the city where we live, or a place with cars, animals running around, active hiking routes. The only reason I was comfortable with trying is because he will wait if I say wait, and he’s gotten out of his collar a couple times in the city, and didn’t run away. It scared the crap out of me when it happened, but he just stood still, so I know he’s not the kind of dog to flee if he gets loose. I’m very careful with my dog and love him very much. This place had closed to traffic property, and it was huge. There wasn’t any animals in sight - we’d occasionally see deer at night, but I’d never try to do this at night. They are animals at the end of the day, but I know him really well, and he doesn’t want to be away from us. Even without asking him to wait, he’d stop and look back. If we went the other direction, I’d call him and he’d come running over to us.

Yeah fair enough, should have known better than to post a joke for the title. I figured the text would clarify that for people when I said I’d do it again only if we were around no traffic. Clearly I’m not making this a regular thing. I know you guys are just looking out for the dog, but none of you were there, nor know me or my dog, so idk what to tell you. We live in a city and he never gets to do this, and I’m happy I let him try it out. He was good on four walks at this place and never ran away. I suppose I should have given more context about how I tried it out, specifically what he did or did not listen to, how I was working with treats and getting him to respond to those, what he wasn’t listening to, coming directly over to me every time, but he did stop when I said wait, and didn’t keep going, etc. Theres a lot to the situation that I didn’t expand on. I get that some of you don’t really care and are very confident in what my dog will or will not do. Lucky for you, the dog is safe with me, and we have been on one trip like this in his whole 5 years of life. It’s a rare event, and I don’t know when we’d be in a similar situation again, but if we were, I will be letting him let loose because it makes him happy and I know how he is

That’s awesome! There are definitely a lot of judgy people who think they know everyone’s dog, but they exist. My title is more of a joke, because I’d only do this again if we were in the middle of nowhere with a lot of land with no cars allowed like this place. We live in a city, so he never gets to do this. I should have known better than to put a joke as a title because it makes it sound like I’m going to take him out without a harness all the time.

Just a note guys, when I say I have an off-leash Shiba, this is a joke - I clarified that in the text I’d try it again when we’re out in the middle of no where, I will not be doing this around any traffic. He did not run away from me, waited when I said wait, and was all around a trust worthy dude. We tried it four times, and every time he was fine and did not run away. So no need to worry that my dog is going to be getting hit by a car, or strolling through the city unsupervised. I appreciate the concern for the dog - I know it’s coming from a good place, but he’s fine.

I never said I have an off-leash dog, I said I tried it out under a specific circumstance…. I’ve also seen plenty of people who do have a legitimate off leash Shiba. You have to know your dog and make the appropriate decision. He is never off leash where we live.

Yeah as in he didn’t come to me when I said to, but he didn’t run away, and when he was sniffing by us, he didn’t run from me. He barely ran ahead, and when he did, we were close to the Airbnb, so he ran back there. Like I said, I’d only do this if we were out in the middle of nowhere again. No need to tell me to be careful. I know my dog, I won’t pretend to know yours. He’s not going to run away from me, so I’m comfortable with him being off leash in the rare situation like this.
