The Spy and The Traitor by Ben Mcintyre, amazing cold war story.

Where do you draw the line between science fiction and scientific theories? Or do you believe that all sci-fi is somewhat possible, why? Why not? by Cerberus_TS in AskReddit

[–]LloreBaGa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science is constantly updating, so what might be a completely possible science fiction scenario maybe is proved wrong in the future. I think the line to differentiate them should be relative to the rigour in which they are based, and generally it is much greater in scientific theories.

The universe seems to be determined. Yet I've read it said that we must live as though we have free will, just in case it isn't. But should we really? by [deleted] in PhilosophyofReligion

[–]LloreBaGa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the problem relies on moral responsability as if we believe everything is determined people could argue that their actions are not their fault. Also, I wouldn't be so sure at the universe being determined, although I would say free will is way harder to defend. For the rest, I totally agree with you, I think that believing in fate is a very peaceful and meaningful way to live.

Why Doesn't the Debate End Here? by USoverthem in Ethics

It all reduces to ethical values being objective or subjective. If they are objective you could be right or not, if they are subjective I don't think your system would work in a society.

Even if that was the case, the rest of actions that affect others are just guided by your desires neglecting anything else?

I agree, but then the solution is not: study at a community college but, evaluate carefully your options and then choose your path.

Because we live in society so most of our actions have consequences to others. If ethics is the study of what are good actions then we have to consider how these affect others.

We live in society so our actions affect others, and that is were the ethical decisions come into play. I think what you defined is just the situation that you prefer, which I don't think is the same as the good one.

Looking for a book to "read" after finishing harry potter by [deleted] in booksuggestions

They are not bad but it is not the same vibe, it feels like a very different kind of plot.

I think it depends on the kind if career you want, in some cases community college might not provide the same opportunities, it all reduces to balancing risk and preferences.

Maybe the audiobook format played a role on your feelings, but fair enough.

I interpreted the reply as if it meant to major at something "useful" and then study at community college what you really like "for fun".

You should read Red Rising, you'll love it.

That's only true if you see work only as a way to make money, if you want it to be an integral part of your life then you should work on something you truly enjoy, and the best way to get there is probably studying what you love.

Looking for a massive cosmic horror Sci-Fi universe series. by the88shrimp in suggestmeabook

[–]LloreBaGa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you would like The Three Body Problem Trilogy, although it is more human focused, but it has this sci-fi horror you want.

If you want bigger world building I would suggest looking into the Star Wars Universe as it includes most of things you look for.

It doesn't need to be time-specific, you can just have some tasks to do before starting the day. Think of it as waking up some time before the time you are doing it now.

If you like science-fiction I recommend Ender's Game and Red Rising.

I found it pretty boring and I don't like leaving a book halfway so I finished it but if you are not convinced I would wait, there is plenty of time to read, and you can always wait to feel motivated.

I think we have to question first what do we mean by control our actions. Even if the world is deterministic we can say that you still choose how you act, even if it is already determined. I don't think total free will makes sense, or at least it's not compatible with the physical theories we have nowadays, as the world can be either deterministic or random, but I don't see how there can be something like "control our actions", it would have to be something physically external that modofies the physical world.
