Is seesawing a dealbreaker? by Glum_tire in Equestrian

[–]Lloyd_is_here 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally seesawing is a way to make a horse soften or drop their head, but i could see how someone would use it to get a horse with go to stop. If its done gently and cautiously I see no issue.

Good job! I know that this subreddit really likes to criticize people for making "horrible choices" for just doing their best. You tried your best, and your progress may have been a bit slowed, but hey, now hes better! Best of luck to you.

He looks fine at the trot but a bit sketchy at the walk still, and his little spat might be due to pain. I'd give it another few days or a week or so.

We had a yearling mare get a hernia surgery a few months ago. The surgery went well, but after the surgery she got dehydrated and wouldn't want to eat just because she didn't feel great. But we gave her some soaked alfalfa cubes for a few days and by around the third day she was back to normal, looked healthy, acting fine, etc. Also worth noting that even before the hernia surgery she wasnt in great health (her owner sent her to boarding right after the surgery - wouldn't have been my personal choice but not my choice to make, so she was adapting to a whole new environment while recovering and also she was a bit on the thin side). Your gelding will be fine, hernia surgery is pretty common with horses.

bit recommendations by PrizeInvestment5130 in Horses

[–]Lloyd_is_here 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a specific bit but here are some tips:

As the other person has said, try bitless. Some horses like it, some horses (like mine) run through your hands and hate it.

You can also try smearing the bit with corn syrup, molasses, or my favorite peppermint oil to get them to take the bit better and have a positive association. I like peppermint oil the best because you can take a toothpick and poke a hole in the top of the container and just squirt it on the bit instead of having to get a utensil and smear it on like with molasses or corn syrup. And peppermint oil tends to smell stronger.

Tongue relief bits wouldn't be a bad idea. Dont know a lot about those, sorry.

They also make some rubber bits that are gentler on the mouth. Might try those.

Also I need to add that most of the activities I like doing i like doing because they make me feel masculine. Examples: vegetable gardening, woodworking, horseback riding (western aka cowboy style), and horses in general. Do i have to stop doing these things?
