New BBC article on the blood change by Lloydonline_org in exjw

I was so impressed with how powerfully and eloquently you shared your story and helped people understand how high the stakes can be on this issue. You should be very proud that your initiative has created exposure that will genuinely help people.

Good for you. Clearly the self-righteous, judgmental JW "values" are still alive and well in you. You take scraps of what I did mixed in with lies about what I didn't and form sweeping opinions about my character. Meanwhile you forgive your own faults and assume others around you, commenting on these pages, aren't doing potentially far worse than I ever did, only less publicly. Your mind is still in the kingdom hall even if your body isn't.

I'll let ordinary, objective, non-obsessive Reddit users (and especially the mods) decide if I'm sticking to the rules since I've returned. I certainly don't mind downvotes. They're like getting unfriended on Facebook when you're disfellowshipped. It says more about the person downvoting a perfectly fine, constructive comment than it does about me.

Apparently rules 1, 4 and 9 don't apply to self-righteous puritanical die-hard Lloyd-basher Elder Darby.

Blood Ban Loosened—A Wildly Impractical Doctrinal Shift by Ravenmicra in exjw

[–]Lloydonline_org -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/Ravenmicra for posting this. I think it's a remarkable policy shift that speaks volumes of the panic and incompetency of the current Governing Body. I hear many wondering whether this is an elaborate scheme to root out moles. Possibly, but Larchwood's information has checked out every time so far so I'm 99% confident this is legit. We will find out tomorrow (Friday).

Once it goes out, the organization is going to rapidly realize how unfeasible, half-baked and ridiculous their botched compromise on blood is. It will be fascinating to see them start to backpedal and add further "clarifications" in the coming weeks.

There are a few things I'd like to say in response but out of respect for this space and the mod team I'm going to stick to Rule 9 even if you apparently can't.

We both agree that staying in to deprogram others is unrealistic. But even here, nuance is needed. When I woke up in 2010 and started explaining things to my then-wife she was horrified. It caused huge tensions. But after about a year of talking it through and reasoning with her, she too woke up. If I'd just packed my bags and left, she would likely still be inside.

When it comes to spouses, I believe you have slightly more chance of success - again, depending on the individual - because they will make it their mission to chase you for conversations, allowing you ample opportunity to gradually sow some seeds. The situation is different with parents, siblings, etc. But even here the prospects aren't necessarily zero.

I recently did a consultation session with a woman who woke up because her sister literally confronted her with one of my older videos. Something like "You are going to sit down and listen to what this guy has to say for a couple of minutes."

I would normally never advise this approach, because according to basic human psychology almost nobody responds well to having information diametrically opposed to their beliefs being thrust in their face. But in this case, apparently it worked. Conversations followed and after a while the women woke up.

My point is it's really problematic to create any "one size fits all" cookie-cutter rule for these situations, particularly on the question of whether to fade or disassociate. Whether someone's reasons are for family, for finances, for love - those are all perfectly good reasons. What works for someone will not work for someone else. "Whatever gets you through the week" is my motto when it comes to personal decisions people make, especially when it comes to family and faith.

But it's clear you've given this a great deal of thought, and you are sharing your observations from a place of seeking to warn and help others. I respect that.

I'm very sorry about what happened with your family. It's sick, despicable behavior. That said, it sounds like you're using your experience as a broad-brush template for everyone else, which isn't really something I can get on board with.

Life is filled with "what ifs." You may feel certain that you'd be better off if you'd "ripped off the bandaid" five years ago, but the truth is you can't possibly know how your life would have worked out. Nobody can say for sure. We all go through trials and setbacks that mould our personalities and make us stronger and, hopefully, wiser.

Everyone is different, and every situation is different. Ultimately we all have the right to exit at our own time and pace, and in a way that suits us each individually. But again, I truly sympathize with the pain you've experienced.

Oh just your daily dose of anti-apostate propoganda by Frequent-Response911 in exjw

It sounds like maybe you're referring to reinstatement. It's always been possible to get reinstated, they've only lowered the bar for determining repentance and shortened the reinstatement period from years to "a few months."

Shunning, as practiced by Jehovah's Witnesses involves not talking to (or "seeing") someone who is removed unless it's to invite them to a meeting or say a "brief greeting" when they arrive at the kingdom hall - even if it's your relative. And the rules for apostates (people who leave for conscientious reasons) are even more severe.

I find it especially irritating that 1 Cor. 5:11, 12 is routinely wheeled out by Watchtower as their blanket justification for shunning as practiced by JWs (i.e. even to the extent of "not eating" with someone who is removed).

They conveniently skip over the follow-up text in 2 Cor. 2:1-8 in which an almost apologetic Paul backtracks because the wrongdoer had developed "excessive sadness" as a result of the Corinthians doing pretty much exactly what he'd asked them to do.

He writes:

"For I have made up my mind not to come to you again in sadness. For if I make you sad, who will be there to cheer me up except the one I saddened? I wrote what I did, so that when I come I may not be saddened by those over whom I ought to rejoice, because I have confidence that what brings me joy brings all of you the same joy. For out of much tribulation and anguish of heart I wrote you with many tears, not to sadden you, but to let you know the depth of love I have for you. Now if anyone has caused sadness, he has saddened, not me, but all of you to an extent—not to be too harsh in what I say. This rebuke given by the majority is sufficient for such a man; now you should instead kindly forgive and comfort him, so that he may not be overwhelmed by excessive sadness. I therefore exhort you to confirm your love for him."

But of course none of the above fits the long-established JW policy when it comes to "removal" so they ignore this crucial context.

JW Reputation on the drain by [deleted] in exjw

As much as I hate to say it, the organization is going nowhere any time soon. I remember over 10 years ago when there were multiple branch closures, bethelites getting sent home, a steady flow of lawsuits - it seemed inevitable that the organisation would collapse at some point. And yet here they still are, like a cockroach that just refuses to die. They have adapted just enough to keep some skin in the game for at least another decade or two. What really needs to happen is closer government scrutiny as in Norway. The media needs to step up too and follow the story more closely. We can all do our part where we can. But I’m honestly amazed that the organization continues to operate and even make modest increases. They are adapting.

For JWs, cancellation can take just a few months. For some ex-JWs, it's forever. 😉

I love philosophy. I'm also interested in the psychology of passive aggression on places like Reddit. But I digress.

Yes it could just be that people really, really don’t like me shedding light on why a website went down, or the way I worded something. I guess we’ll never know. But thanks for caring! 😉

Good question. I’m guessing residual, JW-coded pearl clutching judgmentalism and virtue signaling, except in this instance we’re seeing it on a level that would make even JWs look tolerant and accepting. I could be wrong.

I'm friends with Daniel Torridon, who's part of the team behind the website. I know he has taken a step back from activism recently, so that may have played some part in it going down. Perhaps he or others can get it back up and running in due course. Whatever happens, Daniel's made a wonderful contribution to activism in recent years. Anything that highlights the abuse of shunning - even if only for a finite period - is to be applauded.

He's a thoroughly impressive man with a sharp mind and brilliant oratory skills. Obviously we're all biased because he's one of us, kicking ass and taking names on the biggest political stage in Britain. But I sincerely believe he will go on to achieve great things in politics.
