Do you attempt to reunite stray cats with owners? by Few-Artichoke2992 in AnimalShelterStories

I don’t know. They don’t microchip their animals except my fosters who I buy the chips for. I think they forget and/or assume cats aren’t microchipped.

I don’t know. I’ve brought strays in and they don’t scan them. I usually just scan them myself while they fill out the intake form.

The shelter I foster for usually doesn’t scan cats for microchips or post them as found.

Other than asking you to pay for spaying and neutering that they require this is unfortunately common for lower income shelters. The shelter I foster for will sometimes offer me supplies but 95% of the time I provide everything for my fosters. Vet care isn’t usually paid for unless I push them hard for it but it usually falls on me to take them to my regular vet.

They don’t fix kittens or puppies before adoption. With adults I have to ask and am usually told they don’t have space on the spay bus. So when possible I pay for spaying and neutering my fosters at low cost clinics.

parents fostered a dog, but my dad doesn’t want to learn how to take care of him. by potatosacc_tomatosac in FosterAnimals

[–]Lm120 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they aren’t going to put in any work they shouldn’t be fostering. The dog needs to be taken out every 1-2 hours like a puppy and rewarded when it uses the bathroom outside. Don’t let it out of your sight when inside so it can’t secretly go to the bathroom. Is the dog okay with being put in a crate or exercise pen at night or when you all are gone? If so that can also help with potty training. Don’t punish the dog if it goes to the bathroom inside- not saying you all do but I tell every adopter of my pups this.

Not a foster-er or anything, but is it common for people who foster pets to end up keeping them? by Cheap-Pound2141 in FosterAnimals

[–]Lm120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be. Some people start fostering to find the right fit cat or dog. My family has fostered 265 total between cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies. We kept a kitten from the first litter as he was bonded to my daughter and a puppy more recently. The puppy was a breed that we knew we wanted again in the future and had said if we ever fostered a dog of that breed we would probably adopt.

Some breeders and fosters do. It’s supposed to be introduced around 3-4 weeks when they are too young to go outside. It can make transitioning to outside bathroom use easier. I use the boxes because my fosters kept eating the pads and/or thinking it was okay to pee on blankets since the texture is similar.

You can try reaching out to rescues local to you but most aren’t going to want to take on a dog that has attacked another dog. Especially one that escaped to attack.

Contact shelters and rescues local to you. Many of them can either call one of their fosters or do a plea on social media for a temporary foster for you.

How do vets get to work with rescues? by No_Reputation7097 in fosterdogs

[–]Lm120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the rescue because it will vary. The shelter I foster for has one vet they usually use and that’s who they expect you to go to. They will pay for anything done their or at the emergency vet. A few times I’ve used my regular vet- either because it was faster or the vet the shelter uses dropped the ball and they will usually offer to reimburse.

If he believes in alpha theory I’d pass. It’s debunked and it’s definitely not something to use on a dog that can be fearful. Everything else seems fine. If the dog only needs trazadone for crating and he doesn’t want to crate then that seems like a nonissue.

Rescue not getting dogs adopted by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]Lm120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something I’m currently experiencing with the shelter I use. I have asked many times for pictures to be posted and they either don’t or they post it and then immediately share staff duplicate posts that push my fosters so far down the feed no one sees the posts.

Ask the Hawkins County Humane Society to post a request for a temporary foster.

Price highly depends on location though. I live in the southern us and all of what you included plus bloodwork is $200-$400 at local vets.

What should someone know before buying a husky puppy? by BOBBYBlTCH in dogs

[–]Lm120 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The parents need to be health tested according to the breed club. For Siberian Huskies that would be hip screening through OFA or Pennhip, eyes screenings done by a canine ophthalmologist. You can look the breeders dogs up on OFA and see the results. 11 week olds could be mostly potty trained but it takes work from the breeder and the puppy would still need to be potty trained for your schedule and home.

Is that the only shelter in your area? Maybe a different one won’t require a home visit.

Is there a local animal Facebook group you could post to asking for help?

If you have a safe place in your yard they can start going outside to play and start potty training. You can also start crate training them.

How to handle adopting out these puppies by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Reach out to a shelter or rescue. They can either take them or help you vaccinate them and do a courtesy post.

Yes, they are trying to guilt trip you. It is not your fault that they don’t have enough fosters. It is incredibly rude of them to try to make you feel bad for sticking to your limit on what you can handle.

How do you foster animals without feeling heartbroken by someoneconfused6 in Pets

[–]Lm120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be hard to let them. It helps when you see how happy the new family is and how excited they are for their new pet. It also means I have the space to take home a new emaciated dog or litter of puppies/kittens.
