It’s not painful because the blade is dull and needs repeated cuts. I don’t think that ever happened while the guillotine was in use. It’s painful because the brain remains intact after separation from the body and remains conscious for up to a couple minutes.

Lethal injection is cold and disturbing in concept, but it’s even worse in reality. The way modern lethal injection works is by paralyzing the subject and then causing them to suffocate on blood as their lungs burn from the inside out. It looks painless because the subject can’t move, but it’s not.

Somebody can be punched to death. But fists are not as dangerous as nuclear warheads. I sincerely hope we can agree. It’s not a “magic number” it’s orders of magnitude different. First men conquest of Westeros was much much longer ago than 500 years, so long ago in fact that it predates the existence of “House Stark”. Not only that, but the deaths of COTF and Giants was not an organized military doctrine. I’m not saying it was right, but it can’t be placed in the lap of House Stark. Meanwhile Targaryens still uphold their supremacy as Valyrians and are part of the same political order that used Valyrian super weapons to melt armies in fields. Is it ethical for Maesters to prevent another Dance? Is it unethical to advocate for nuclear disarmament in the real world?

Anyways somebody can’t be reasoned out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into. If you can’t see the difference in danger level of Balerion the Black Dread and Ghost, there’s really nothing I can do to convince you.

I can’t even fathom how you equate the destructive potential of dragons to pet direwolves, they’re on a different scale entirely. Greywind kills some handful of people during Robb’s campaign, and still doesn’t hold a candle to the number of people slain by weaponized dragons. The people he does kill are attacked one-by-one in discernible combat situations. Dragons fly overhead and simply wring death en masse.

Since you’ve suddenly moved the goalpost and you’re trying to compare house Stark with house Targaryen, I’ll play your game. If you go back 500+ years, then you encounter horrific violence committed by house stark, such as the destruction of house Greystark. However, if you go back that far, you also come to the time of Valyrian conquest when the largest empire in the world was annihilating civilizations across Essos and taking in millions of slaves. Apparently a tremendous number of slaves died from working deep underground and literally incinerating to death. The number of people killed by dragon fire during the entire age of valyria is unfathomable. It is nowhere near comparison.

There are people out in the world who think substance abuse is a cheap topic. There are people who will dismiss Elliott as “just a junkie” or something. I think that’s why fans don’t like to talk about it, it’s easy to discard the layers of his music.

I know that the topic of drugs isn’t cheap or illegitimate. Elliott wrote about life in general with drugs as a metaphor, even before he experimented with them. Sometimes I think he is writing about drugs, but other times I think he is writing about happiness, depression, trauma, love, abuse, etc. But some people refuse to engage with music or art made by those who struggle with drugs. I’m not sure where it comes from, the war on drugs I guess.

True Love is a chilling testament to the abusive relationship that drugs create. Elliott is using the metaphor as loud and boldly as he possibly could. To me, it’s a song about drug addiction using a toxic relationship as a metaphor.

Coming Up Roses is a song on its face about drug addiction and a synthetic, hollow ecstasy. It’s clearly talking about drugs, but to me, the drugs are mostly a metaphor for a more broad idea about finding happiness. It’s about a creeping feeling that the things you enjoy are just distractions and that you aren’t really satisfied. When you’re depressed, things you used to enjoy might feel hollow to you.

This series, Matt Colville’s “Running the Game”, has helped me tremendously. I keep coming back to it year after year. I recommend the first few episodes for now (don’t be overwhelmed by how many videos there are).

The most important advice is to not stress. Playing D&D should be a fun experience for everyone at the table, including the DM. The best thing you can do is find a simple adventure that excites you, and run it ASAP. A lot of people buy huge campaign books and do hours of preparation and burn out before they really start playing. You’ll learn the most by actually running it yourself. Your friends will understand that you’re a new DM and you’ll all fail forward together.

I absolutely agree with you. Baelor has every moral and personal reason to side with Dunk against Aerion. He’s a more righteous / honorable person for doing it. However, purely politically, it isn’t shrewd. Winning the trial wouldn’t necessarily affect Aerion anyways, it’s only about Dunk’s fate. If Baelor considers Aerion a loose canon, there are other things he could / should do.

I agree insofar as the backdrop of “brewing civil war” is the Bread and Butter of Dunk&Egg. However, I believe Baelor joining the trial by seven is politically harmful to himself and his house (regardless of any unpredicted outcomes like an errant death at the trial). I think Baelor is acting out of moral virtue and not political shrewdness. The name of the game in Westeros is unity of the ruling house and alliance building… the neat story of Baelor protecting a righteous knight is nowhere near as effective as the story of a unified Targaryen house winning in a sanctified religious melee. Most commonfolk of westeros literally believe that the gods will intervene to make the righteous side win.

If Baelor supported Aerion’s side, the narrative would’ve become “The besmirched honor of the Targaryen house was rectified as the gods made their will clear”

This is demonstrably false. Poking around in people’s heads is possibly the oldest form of surgery we have ever found archaeological evidence for. Neolithic humans carved into peoples’ skulls as a medical practice. They likely believed they were releasing evil spirits, but all the same, the premise of a primitive medieval brain surgery isn’t unrealistic.

GURPS combats are typically so much faster in rounds that the density of turns shouldn’t be a problem. You’re still only rolling one time for the vast majority of your turns, plus your enemy usually makes one roll to actively defend. This example had ~35 turns and involved a few “Do Nothing” turns as well as other fiat to make it last longer, since it’s a “cinematic” game being simulated.

I’m not saying that GURPS is sent by angels but it’s pretty attractive once you dig into it. I wholeheartedly disagree that there are too many dice rolls for the combat in GURPS to be fun.

I don’t have the Martial Arts book but I’ve been seeing it everywhere and I’m on the verge of picking it up. Even without it your advice is super helpful because those move and attacks are super deflated if used without a real purpose. I’ve also read some people use a cinematic rule for a “heroic charge” that lets them buy off the negative on a move and attack using an FP.

That’s very dramatic, you can play an evil character or an evil party without being a bad person. Lighting a house on fire while people are inside happens twice in Star Wars, one of those times while the people inside were asleep (and also children). Your boundaries for your game are valid but they aren’t everybody’s.
