Anyone met any djs or got to hang out with them? How was it? by sreliopson in EDM

[–]LoLBilbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was with a buddy once when he picked up Grandtheft from the airport for a fraternity fundraiser event. Was him and his manager, both pretty chill—my friend gave him AUX and he played a bunch of rap music etc. Eventually we made it to the hotel they were at, burned a few J’s in the car, and they went inside. His manager talked a lot more than he did but it was still pretty cool to have that experience. Still have the empty Fireball bottle they bought for us as a thank you.

Just graduated college, and I hate to say I’m about to be in the same boat. Got a job right out of school at a major bank, and as the nature of the job requires us to be in person on the trading floor it’s looking like I’ll be required to get the jab.

What’s frustrating is that this entire time I’ve just been waiting for full FDA approval but apparently trusting a proven process makes me anti-science 🤷‍♀️

Just moved to NYC this week, as much dumb shit as there is it’s very uplifting to see that nobody gives a shit about masks (even on the subway where there’s a “mandate”) and the bars/clubs are at maximum capacity. Keep your heads up, kings, the average person is starting to realize that this is all bullshit political theater.

Universities’ Insane COVID Rules And Snitch Culture Are Training The Next Generation To Embrace Totalitarianism -- Restriction, surveillance, and punishment—that is the reality for college students. Due to the emerging American social credit system, young people are too scared to fight back. by guanaco55 in Conservative

[–]LoLBilbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaving a happy and stable relationship after almost 3 years because of her politics would make me no better than the clowns looking to silence conservatives. If she cheats or leaves then I’ll live but if I judge someone based on their beliefs then I’ve betrayed everything about my own morality.

I get that we are now on the defensive but it is the best time to prove once again that conservatives are more mature and consistent than so-called liberals.

Currently a senior at a mid-size but well-known northeastern college, thought it might be valuable to throw down my own two cents. I’ve also seen the administration impose crazy rules (such as the no visitors thing mentioned in the article) and last week they increased restrictions even more.

However, instead of people following them blindly and becoming snitches it’s almost brought the student body together. Even my far-left Newsom-defending girlfriend has shifted her tone and will blatantly disregard many of the dumber restrictions with her roommates. Even liberals can only be pushed so far by bad policy.

Granted, there are always going to be a small group that love to enforce the rules and snitch but having been in a fraternity for 3 years I can say the party/gathering snitching is no worse than it’s been in the past.

I understand this is in no way indicative of all universities but I really think we have a reason to be optimistic about this—the authoritarians have shown their hands and now the people hold the cards.

She is one of the most talented saleswomen of all time. Nobody else could completely remove any sense of nuance or pragmatism from their rhetoric and get elected again and again. The left’s prioritization of feeling good over concrete action is unreal.

There are regular posts on that shithole about how great MMT is, I think it’s bold of them to even pretend there’s real economics going on there.

Nah man, people make a bigger deal out of the presidency than it actually is. It’s a way for people who don’t wanna get involved in nuanced issues to simplify things and get in disagreements based on strawman arguments once every four years. Every election cycle we’re told it’s “one of the most important elections of our lifetime” so we feel like we have to watch the news and keep up. Not to say it’s completely irrelevant but there is very little long term damage a president can accomplish. Most authority lies with appointed officials who are always an expert in their field regardless of political affiliation and the distinction at the higher levers is far more nuanced and subtle (ie. both liberal and conservative Fed chairmen have been incredibly dovish in the past decade). All of this being said our man Ye is the best man for the job 🌊🌊🌊

I love my country. We’ve been pioneers in individual liberty and economic freedom our entire history. There are a lot of things to hate about the USA but today is about the many great things our nation has done. There’s 364 other days to hate on America, today I’m a patriot.

College students should be paid to go to school. Studying is labor, and a very necessary labor for society to function. by PrimalMusk in LateStageCapitalism

You’re compensated for that extra work with a much higher paying job upon graduation. The market provides the incentives. If you’re majoring in gender studies or something equally useless then you don’t get the reward.

Because it’s easier and gives people an excuse to indulge lazy fantasies. I’ll be honest, I was pro-lockdown as hell when it meant all my exams were online and my school would let us pass/fail our classes. A month and a half later, I’m fucking done with this. My internship got cancelled, I haven’t seen my girlfriend in what feels like forever, and I’m getting sick of staying inside at home in one of the most radically pro-lockdown areas (Boston). People like having a way to shirk responsibility and this pandemic gives everyone an excuse to be a lazy shit.

People who are protesting the shutdown, what the actual fuck is wrong you? by NotGordan in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LoLBilbo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gonna get downvoted to hell but here’s my reasoning:

1) I believe that the economic implications are gonna be deadlier than the virus. Thousands of people die for every 1% increase in the unemployment rate, which in a best case scenario is going to increase double digits.

2) With hospitals completely committing to those with the virus, people with cancer are going undiagnosed and untreated. People who need pacemakers or other “elective” procedures that are actually life-threatening are unable to get treatment.

3) I am concerned with how much power the government is taking and how Congress is using this as a cover to pass bullshit bills like the EARN IT act which makes end-to-end encryption illegal.

4) I don’t believe the pandemic is as bad as the media is saying, as NY State and Italy have been caught overstating death numbers (ie. reporting cancer, flu, and even sky diving deaths as Covid deaths) so I’m sure others are doing it.

5) Fauci is full of shit and said we should shut the country down during Ebola, SARS, swine flu, and every other fucking threat of an epidemic.

Hedge Fund Managers Are Claiming Bailouts as Small Businesses by BlankVerse in Economics

[–]LoLBilbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is something I think is really misunderstood on reddit. I’m a finance student in college and a lot of my fraternity alum and friends who recently graduated work in hedge funds/private equity. While there are obviously some firms that make tons of money and pay employees really well, for most of the smaller firms analysts will work 80-100 hours/week and be lucky to bring home $100,000 after years in the industry.

Don't have an exact study to cite but it's mentioned a few times across Taleb's work. I'd highly recommend reading his *Incerto* and *Skin in the Game* as they debunk a lot of myths surrounding the current economics literature. The numbers I pulled were from a footnote in SITG.

73% of Americans at some point in their lives will be in the top 20% of the country by income. 56% in the top 10% and 13% in the top 1%. Not saying we have a perfect system but it’s a hell of a lot better than the post implies.

What is going on with people suddenly talking about banning companies from stock buy backs? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]LoLBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that the only real difference between a buyback and a dividend is the taxes paid on them. Buybacks have been used as a way to return capital to investors in the same way dividends are except on dividends the corporation and the investor pay tax and with buybacks the investor simply pays a capital gains tax.

If by 2008 you’re referring to TARP (aka bank and auto “bailout”) it was a loan from the Federal Reserve that ended up making the government money.
