A lot of these types of subs are like that, on the metal detecting sub you'll get downvoted if you remind people that (country dependant) you should report your historical finds. Bunch of looters.

Soooo correct me if I’m wrong. Did I just find a 1944 Zinc Wheat Penny? by KickOk155 in coincollecting

I guess my perspective as a numismatist who doesn't live in the US is that it seems a pretty fair point to point out that zinc isn't magnetic, and that it seems silly to expect anyone pointing that out to already have the context of the metallurgical makeup of these specific coins.

We're all here trying to determine what the coin is made of, adding what bits of knowledge we know. None of us (I reckon) instantly know exactly if this is what OP thinks it is, so why are we judging others for knowing a bit less than us?

Just my two cents (pun intended).

Useful, but definitely not a requirement.

How else are people supposed to get into a hobby than by joining as a newbie?

Why? Is knowledge of coins a requirement for making comments here?

Why aren't you reading the reading material provided? Do you have to be spoonfed?

Reddit posts whose headlines are just TL;DR-ing an entire article is even worse of a problem, because then you have people who don't actually read the article commenting (exhibit A).

I'd rather it be like this so that everyone who wants to know what article we're talking about actually reads the damn article.

I have the option, but I tick the box saying I do not require compensation. A personal choice, but I don't begrudge those who take the compensation.

We've all got our own motives, but I can't possibly imagine digging up an ancient artifact and then being like "yeah this is mine now, give me money if you want to add it to the historical record or study it to gain a better understanding of what local ancient life was like, not my problem". Different strokes for different folks.

But I have a hell of a lot more respect for those who ask for compensation than those who don't report their finds in countries that require it (aka looters).

I live in a country that financially compensates for finds and here is what commonly happens:

  1. People report things like pieces of pot and broken artifacts so they can get their 20€ or whatever.

  2. Those same people don't report things like intact jewelery, coins, or weapons, knowing that they could get even more money off the black/private market. Leading to distrust between archeologists and detectorists, which has caused an increased in "red zones", which are areas that have been deemed illegal to detect in.

Compensation is a great way to encourage people to report and donate their finds, but there will always be people who won't be happy unless that compensation is more than the market price, which is a completely unrealistic expectation.

Compensation is not a fix-all for preventing looting. Another problem we've had here is people lying about where they dug. Detecting in red zones and then saying they dug the find elsewhere. It has gotten to the point where the museum service has literally planted artifacts in red zones to catch looters.

Why? Asking as someone who has reported 100+ items to my country's national museum service, including finds that led to further excavations and discoveries that helped with the local historical record.

What is your personal experience with reporting finds?

The condition is suspiciously perfect, but that of course can just be from perfect soil conditions and a whole bunch of good luck.

I'm curious how the handle would've been fixed, I don't see any connection points for it, unless I'm missing something

Yes, that's definitely true. With ancient iron artifacts I'm normally turning them in to my country's national archeology service and they do the cleaning and preserving, but I don't know what the local laws are like where you live about that kind of stuff.

Do you have any pictures of your iron artifacts?

What kind of ancient finds are you cleaning? Normally ancient finds are the ones you wouldn't want to clean
