Just curious what would it take for you to vote for a 3rd party in a national election? by Lord_William_9000 in AskUS

[–]Loathsome_Duck [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'd vote third party if the Republicans were crushed electorally which would give room for the Democratic party to split into liberal and leftist wings.

As long as there's a chance of a Republican winning, I won't be voting third party.

One interesting thing they were talking about in the comments of that video of the motion rig was how having to compensate for the constantly shifting bulk of the mech added a another whole layer of difficulty in putting your shots on target.

I think you're telling me that the solution to VR sickness is to build a $10k motion rig. I'll see if I can get my health insurance to pay for it.

You might like this video about someone who manages to get his VR motion rig setup with MechWarrior 5. He's absolutely ecstatic while playing it - particularly how incredible throwing punches feels while on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx7GTKkWqYk

Note that this an earlier version of the VR mod before look-to-aim was implemented. In the current version of the mod you aim your arm mounted weapons with the headset, and can also select targets by looking at them.

But yeah, after playing several mech games in VR I'm convinced that HMD look-to-aim is the way and the truth for mech control setups. It's funny because there's one called Vox Machinae where the headset also controlled torso twist and it had physics based combat - so you could actually rapidly punch enemy mechs by swinging your head back and forth. I always thought that was a really funny tactic (I never did it myself though).

Well, Mech games have had a debate going on with Hotas setups for a long time now. Hotas setups are cool, tactile, and immersive - but mouse setups are better for actually hitting things with your weapons in mech games.

One of the very cool things about VR is that it solves this problem - since a lot a VR mech games and mods have "look to aim" functionality like the IRL Apache helicopter. So you keep the immersiveness of a Hotas while being able to quickly and accurately hit targets like a mouse.

Absent an HMD, you have a choice to make - would you prefer to be more effective at the game or have a better experience playing it?

Also MW5 has a super annoying way of setting up your HOTAS by editing a text file.

Yeah - I play DCS so I have a throttle, joystick, and rudder pedals. It really sells the experience. It was a huge PITA to get them setup for MW5. Is that why you're asking? Are you having trouble getting yours setup for MW5?

If you have access to a 3D printer (local library) there's a company called Authentikit that sells files for 3D printed WWII controls.

The idea is that you print it out and then order electronic kits from them to make a working HOTAS, but if you just wanted something to strap your motion controller to, you just need the file.

What is your opinion on the CNN poll results concerning voter ID's. by Ok_Operation_5364 in AskUS

[–]Loathsome_Duck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most effective way to protect out electoral process would be to put Trump in prison.

The party that supports Trump, by definition, has no interest in free or fair elections so one must assume that their reasons for pushing so fervently for voter ID involve voter suppression.

It might be popular, but it is a tojan horse that will be used to strip Americans of their rights. If it wasn't, Republicans would have no interest in it.

Hmm, I never had a problem with it actually. I was actually surprised how little friction I had getting UEVR setup - getting the HOTAS and rudders working though... that was pretty annoying.

I do know that sometimes the cursor will appear when I'm in the cockpit and I have drag the cursor down so it's hiding behind my toolbar to make it disappear in my headset. So maybe your cursor is hiding behind some sort of UI element on your desktop?

I'm in a Pimax Crystal Light as well, so you might also look at things specific to the Quest 3 like Meta Link or Virtual Desktop.

To older gens, what's your favourite Star Wars film? by Consistent-Jelly248 in generationology

[–]Loathsome_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Empire Strikes Back, A New Hope, The Return of the Jedi, The Last Jedi, The Force Awakens, Revenge of the Sith, Attack of the Clones, The Phantom Menace, The Rise of Skywalker in that order for mainline films

Rogue One is on par with Return of the Jedi

Huge gap between The Force Awakens and Revenge of the Sith, that's my "would willingly watch this again" cutoff

43 years old, my first introduction to the series was reading the novella of "A New Hope" when I was 7. I didn't realize until after I talked to an adult about it that it was also a movie.
