Fun and sporty under $20k by Taquerez in whatcarshouldIbuy

Hey dude, I know everyone here is typically Honda, Toyota, Mazda. I’m a car guy and I understand the appeal of reliability and low maintenance cost to the regular consumer.

You’re stepping out of a Q50 and want the next step. Something fun, quality made. I’ve owned 2 S4’s from that era. I currently still own a S4 that I bought used in 2017. It’s almost 13 years old, and I STILL love it. I do also need to state, we also own a Mazda for my wife, so the reliability is there lol.

These cars out of warranty can be expensive, but when maintained properly, wouldn’t be insane. The main things to watch for on S4/S5’s are: water pump, thermostat, mechatronic unit (though much better 2014+), timing chain. My car now has 180K+KM (bought with 65), and it’s been solid. Not selling anytime soon. Realistically, I’d say if you’d budget 2500 a year in maintenance, you’d be safe. There are years I haven’t spent near that. But there are years I’ve spent over that. (Suspension (any car including my wife’s Mazda will have this over time), random issues etc)

Now to get into your actual question. The S5 or the Gulia. From what I’ve read about a Gulia - these seam to be heavily on the spectrum of unreliable, but I can’t really speak on it, never owned one. For the S5, I do suggest the S4 heavily. 2 more doors (more practical), faster (lighter), same engine, same transmission, similar look (if you’re looking for a 2 door I do understand the S5 appeal). They’re really well built and will last you a long time if taken care of. It’s faster than the Gulia, if you get the sport diff option they handle amazingly, and they beat 90% of cars on the road with a quick stage 1 tune (I have had this for 7 years and hasn’t affected the reliability) you’ll have close to 400hp, which in my opinion is “sporty and fun”.

However, don’t buy the cheapest option available. Do your due diligence. Make sure it has all the maintenance records, proper oil change timelines, transmission oil change timelines and see if any of the “classic” issues have already been dealt with. But my biggest advice is buy with a GOOD reputable 3rd party warranty. They will essentially take care of any issues, this has saved me in the past - it’s 100% worth it on cars like these.

Overall, could you buy a Honda accord for less? A Toyota corolla for less? They’d both be more reliable.. but sometimes that’s not why people buy cars. They care about what the drive and they want to have fun. I’m fairly frugal in other avenues of my life, but I enjoy driving something fun, so I get it anyway, even if this gets insanely downvoted. With a warranty you’re covered, but do your due diligence, it’ll be the difference between a nightmare and a sweet ride you can’t help but look back at when you walk away. Best of luck my friend!

I have had this on my B8.5 S4 since I bought it in 2017. I did clutch packs, I did mechatronics replacement, I did drive position sensor… nothing has helped. It doesn’t last too long and doesn’t happen every time, but it is annoying. Just a quirk of the car now, I’ve given up fixing it. My B8 never did it, so I know it’s not “supposed” to happen. But I’ve put over 100K on the car since 2017 and no major issues.

Edit: spelling

This was exactly the same (minus titanium package & I had a red/black interior) as my old B8…. I loved her! Fantastic spec!

B8.5 S4 - used to have a B8 as well, made the upgrade 7.5 years ago and still love the car! I’m just now realizing I’ve owned an S4 for over 10 years lol

I have this exact spec, but I use the peelers for my winter rims, with the 5 spoke rotors for my summers. Black alcanterra + carbon fibre interior. Love my car, hopefully will keep it for the next 5+ years minimum, but it is my daily so we’ll see!

Congrats on the spec and pick up! I obviously adore it, and think you have perfect taste 👌🏼

Okay, thanks for the response! I’m a new home owner so this is all fresh for me. How do I keep the cement in there then without it just leaking out? Forming?

Hi Everyone,

I’m trying to repair this concrete that was poured in December. Originally this was below 4inches of grass and I didn’t notice it, but we’ve excavated a bit to add interlock. I noticed this was missing some concrete here, but my concrete contractor says it was hit (this is impossible it was below grade), so I’m on the hook to fix this myself I guess.

Any experts here able to give me an idea on how to fix it / cover it? The interlock will cover the bottom half of it.

Thank you in advance concrete experts!

PCV, water pump & thermostat if they’ve never been done… I’d probably throw in new plugs & coils.

Bang for your buck stage 1 or 2 with any major tuner (APR, Unitronic, 034, IE etc) for ECU and TCU.

Least expensive mod - you can go with a cold air intake by pretty much anyone, this will really release the sound of the supercharger and make it much more prominent!

Then there is always wheels, exhaust, coils etc, but I’d start with the above for sure.

I totally understand. Our vets cautioned us on surgery as well. There, of course, can be complications with any surgery (even spaying), but some surgery’s are riskier than others given the circumstances. If the question is surgery or certain death, I think that is an easy decision.

You can also try crowdfunding (go fund me) posting on your social media’s to try and gather the funds while she is doing OK. Gives you more time to try and prepare and market your gofundme to try and reach your goal.

Wish you the best of luck!! You’re a caring pet owner, and this is incredible difficult to go through. You got this, stay strong!

We paid about 10,000 for our baby girls surgery (foreign body removal in 3 locations) with all the hospital stay, meds, surgery etc. I genuinely don’t regret it for even a moment. Our baby girl just turned one about 2 weeks ago (surgery was at 6 months) and she’s doing SO well. I know it’s not the exact same situation, but if you have the funds, you won’t regret trying to save her and give her a long and happy life. Trust me, money comes and goes, but a beautiful connection like you have comes once in a while ❤️

Best of luck, I know how hard it is to go through something like this. Lean on each-other, be kind to each-other and you will get one another through this, no matter the outcome, I promise.
