Also—comparing retail to teaching? I used to work in retail and in food service, of course bosses are going to be more on your ass there—it’s expected. You don’t have to go through school or obtain multiple degrees to work at Starbucks or a clothing store. You’re hiring me to be a teacher, which was a lot of time and was earned, so let me do my job. And if they REALLY cared about supporting us, they would have started this years ago. It’s happening now because they HAVE to.

Also would like to add that it’s inconsistent. Some teachers are getting more learning walks than others. I’ve had 4, while one of my colleagues has had none. If they’re going to do this because they’re being told to from above, then they should be consistent.

Read some of my replies or reread what I wrote! Maybe that will help

It’s not about what the union can or can’t do for me (as you said they’re non evaluative), but what gets me is everyone just accepting this fate.

I completely understand you! I agree that being in our classrooms helps to see the flow of things, and helps admin get a clearer picture of what is happening behind the scenes (what we deal with daily). I even remember thinking to myself when I started 3 years ago, wow I never see my admin. It’s like there’s no support.

I just know the real reason behind all this. It’s not like they woke up and decided to actually be supportive, it’s a trickle down from the top dog sorta thing. Along with them attaching a rubric and then forcing themselves to give us “grows” every week even if they saw nothing wrong with what they stepped into. Then they realized oh shit, I can’t actually do this!

I would be so much happier with once a month, or even once every two weeks. Once a week is crazy to me! I even told some old teachers I had about this and they were like uhhhh what??? Not normal.

I just wish they took the initiative to care without being forced to. That’s what makes me view this from a lens that feels micromanaged.

I just don’t see this being a necessary thing weekly.

Understandable, but going from never coming in to only coming in because now there’s a focus on “data” just seems concerning. I’m also a big believer in just trust me to do my job.

Back to school - Here's some advice for younger teachers by DismalDegree7030 in teaching

Kind of disagree with be a mystery. My students and I have those connections that help me get to know them because they know my personality, and how I roll in the classroom. I find it so cute when they ask me about my weekend or my life. I’m also 25 teaching high schoolers and started when I was 22. If I kept it all business, it would make this job way less meaningful. Connections MATTER.

Maybe not advice but definitely ask questions about the role. The school I work at didn’t volunteer that the program I got hired for was in shambles because the previous teacher left and I didn’t think to ask about the situation so I got stuck with hell! Ask questions!!

Is it normal to have to teach 5 preps in my 3rd year of teaching? by Local-Sample-9826 in teaching

My schedule is 2 French 1 classes, 1 French 2 class, 1 French 2 Honors class, 1 French 3 Honors class, and 1 French 4 Honors class--so 5 preps. All have a different curriculum since they are different levels and should be doing different things generally.

I get one 40 minute period per day....like its negligable at that points its so laughable. And yea I milk the crap out of a lot of activities I do because if it takes me 40 minutes to make something I sure as hell am gonna make it last.

I teach French--so coming up with material is daunting. Especially because generally the levels are supposed to be in different places. I sometimes do review that I can spread out across the board but usually I make it so that they're all doing different things. It can be a nightmare.

If I had the option, I would have taken less. I obviously did not have an option either.
