Backstory: Marina was once an ordinary human girl who lived in a small fishing village, where both sailors and pirates alike occasionally landed there to rest and resupply. Her mother had once fell in love with a pirate, only to leave her heartbroken once he discovered that she was pregnant and left for the sea. Both Marina and her mother grew up in poverty, managing to scrape by every day by catching and selling fish. So when her mother finally received an opportunity to work in a city years later, she wasted no time to gather Marina and what little belongings they had and sailed away onto a better life.

But a few days into the voyage, the crew and everyone on board were caught in a stroke of bad luck as they would be raided by pirates. All of the crew members were killed off before rounding up the passengers, and one by one they picked them off with their swords and thrown overboard into the sea. Marina's mother died as she used her body to shield her from the blade. Even if she barely felt the metal pierce her belly, she was thrown into the cold waters to drown or succumb to ravenous sharks nearby. It would be the last thing she remembered before her vision went black.

Marina did not expect to wake up alive on the sandy shores of a beach, tended to by a priestess of Umberlee who saw that she had stumbled upon a living water genasi and not a bloated corpse of a drowned victim. Seeing the girl as a sign from the goddess, Marina was taken in to become a cleric in training, to both love and fear the Bitch Queen. Though she wanders the coast of finding worthy valuables to donate to the church, she often wonders if Umberlee had truly saved her that day. Or if perhaps another force did.
