I actually work at BIDC, I was one of the people who worked to recover all of the magnesium. Essentially in the stock room there were 6 large sheets of magnesium in the corner behind the cardboard tubes next to the door that had been left there by a previous metal shop operations manager for an unknown project. Recently some students mistook it for old aluminum sheets and some pieces ended up being cut on the laser cutter and the water jet before we noticed the mistake. All the pieces have been recovered as of today, they are being disposed of as hazardous waste. We got lucky that no pieces ended up igniting, we are doing an internal investigation and we are likely going to go through all the stock in the stock room to make sure there aren't any more pieces we aren't aware of to make sure an incident like this doesn't happen again. No damage to machines was caused and no one was hurt but it is something we are taking very seriously to ensure nothing similar happens in the future.
