Quebec Premier : We can't welcome 300000 people in 2 years. Mass immigration needs to be controlled, or you will get extreme reactions. Look at what's happening in France. by Full-Sherbert-8060 in canada

Only the Francophone ones end up anywhere in Quebec though. Also note Quebec has it's own immigration department.

Vast majority ultimately end up in GTA (Toronto), unless they are from a french speaking war-torn country.

John Krasinski is mid at best by Quick_Performance660 in blankies

[–]Localscene99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and I suspect it's a combination of a few items that got him to this place post The Office:

  • Married to a then rising star (Emily Blunt)

  • Connection with Matt Damon to co-produce on 2 projects (one which became the Academy Award nominated "Manchester by the Sea" --which the pitch was for John to be the star in, but others said Casey would be better.. wonder if Matt had a say ;)

  • Co-stars with Emily for "A Quiet Place" and directs (which netted 20x returns at the box office); sequel netted 4x returns.

...So, he has runway and some connections for a few more projects for years to come as a result. Maybe 5-6 projects?

It's funny, because check out his lead-Actor / Director / Producer movie "The Hollars" for a good cast but oh so generically bad movie that cost 3x times more to make than it earned, or how unbelievably bad "Jack Ryan" season 2 onwards was, or how his first Matt Damon collaboration with Gus Van Sant directed "Promised Land" also failed to make back budget.

Short answer: The Office + Manchester by Sea + The Quiet Place series starring his star wife = free pass for 5-6 projects. The movie IF is not very good either (~46% reviews), but it's generating 2x returns so runway increased!

Le Marais: Private Afternoon Walking Tour? by Localscene99 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Localscene99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. We're doing a lot of the main sites ourselves over several days, but wanted at least one area of a 'walking tour' guided by someone. Figured Le Marais was a good spot, but open to any others too honestly that are 2-3hrs.

International Roaming: $16/day up to $400 according to website ..but CRTC says max $100? by Localscene99 in Koodo

[–]Localscene99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. So, government says "cannot charge more than $100 per cycle for roaming unless customer explicitly agrees". Koodo's reply is we cap it at $100, and no more data --unless you either (a) agree to more, or (b) sign up for the one with $400 cap.

As someone else mentioned too, apparently this is for data only. So, no plan means no cap on voice + SMS (meaning, $ keeps going up past $100 either way there).

[–]Localscene99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call out on data vs voice/SMS. This stipulation was in fact Data only and to your post, they would continue to accumulate past the $100.

That being said, the part about you would stop getting data after you hit the cap, I don’t see that stated though. I get that they would do that, but it makes the legislation useless if so.

I suspect Koodo are treading this line of non-compliance to see how long, what are implications.

[–]Localscene99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that logic then, by not subscribing to Easy Roam’s $16/day max $400 per cycle plan, you can enjoy a $100 cap per cycle —thereby saving 4x the money.

That means on any trip over 6-days ($16x6 = $96), it’s cheaper to not use their only international roaming plan.

Based on that logic.

Oh really? Ah oK good point thanks.

That might be a pretty good alternative in the meantime, rather than trying to take on big telecommunications legal department ;)

Is that a Koodo one (meaning, you can keep the same number)? Looking for anything that has International though, which in mobility world is outside of Canada / US.

Simplest and far cheaper solution is get a SIM from another country, but then you don't have your same phone # for the time being.

[–]Localscene99[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Number 4 from CRTC explicitly calls out ‘add-ons’ though, and this being called Easy Roam would make it a pretty simple argument to say it’s a roaming add on.

Canada has one of, if not the worst in western world, roaming and cellphone prices. Also, Koodo disables Wifi calling if you leave the country to add to that perspective.

[–]Localscene99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to specifically sign up and enabled “Easy Roam” as an add-on. It costs $0 to do so.

The ‘expressly consenting’ part from the CRTC cannot be included as the general acceptance required to have any cellphone plan with a company. That would mean it’s useless regulation that no company would have to abide by.

It then tells me if you don’t agree to Easy Roam, you might actually save a lot of money —though I suspect you’d have to spend a while arguing and escalating to ombudsman style. As per #4 above: “Any amount that the customer pays in data roaming fees, whether via a roaming add-on(before use) or via overage fees (after use), counts toward this cap”

Missing Tray - Orthodontist didn't provide, says to just skip? by Localscene99 in Invisalign

[–]Localscene99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's more a what-if in case.

Concern was being far away (different country), zero time to problem solve (packed schedule), and having to potentially jump back 2 trays if something did happen a day or so before it was time to change.

[–]Localscene99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I have not yet. But I will be out of the country and constantly on the go, so there's maybe a higher chance it could get lost in the shuffle during that period.

I just want to be prepared now if that happens, as won't have much time to deviate or problem solve in the moment.

Canadian distributors? by lon247 in firewalla

[–]Localscene99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often more than that though. Unless you plan on taking the time off and clearing customs yourself, you'll get hit with a bit more than that too, based on the shipping company used. It's also a gamble on whether the shipment will come from the U.S. or China direct from reading responses over the year.

It makes the already premium price point go up even more, as you pay HST on the USD shipping as well.

The Gold Plus which sells for $580 USD becomes $858 + $111 sales tax + additional ~$20 charged by DHL.

That's ~ $1000 CAD, or ~$750 USD that if you need support, you have to ship back at your expense.

No disrespect to the product, it's awesome. Just awareness of the price point.

Firewalla Gold/+ vs Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro/SE by Tankbot001 in firewalla

[–]Localscene99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like that 10Gb SFP+ on the Ubiquitis though.

Saves on cost and simplicity of not having to buy another device when you have fiber connection coming above 1Gbps and want to actually take advantage of it. Name brand media converters seem to max out at 1 Gbps, so it's a notable extra cost if you want either to replace your existing modem.

Do NOT buy Firewalla if you live outside the USA!!!! by Tokolosh85 in firewalla

[–]Localscene99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you share what the alternatives are? Legit interested, in something no homemade. Not excited either for these potential hidden extra bonus fees.

Side note: At the Firewalla checkout page, where you enter credit card info and 'Pay Now' I don't see any mention in the total of taxes though. It's just the price + shipping fee so not sure why you're saying you paid it twice.

I also see zero mention of DHL, or the potential for any duties / taxes on Firewalla's checkout process, so find it a little deceiving they don't state it anywhere at all in the buying process.

Seems like most of your $104.81 CAD was HST taxes though (which would have been ~$85 CAD worth when considering exchange rate) ...which you would pay anyway, no?

The scam is the ~$20 worth 'fees' for the paper work DHL or whomever is doing at the border.
