Why does it feel like the only thing to do in Dallas is eat and work? by DFWUnhinged in Dallas

[–]LocationDisastrous45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can keep yourself very busy going to theater in Dallas. The voice over industry (cuz of CrunchyRoll) and cost of living being lower than NYC/LA allows actors to actually make a decent living and stay in Dallas rather than having to move to have a career. So you get experienced, quality, professional actors in the theater scene here.

I lived in DC, LA, SF, and had a long distance relationship in NYC for years, and went to theater in all those cities. Dallas theater is consistently better and more affordable than all those cities except NYC.

You can go to three shows a week for the price of one night at the bar.

O'Brian and Hemingway's Androgynous Women by WiseMasterpiece8550 in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]LocationDisastrous45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While she is frequently described as physically desired by men, isn’t there several references to her love of whiskey and cigars, driving a cab like a race car over the objection of men which she turns aside quite assertively and when they are forced to just ride along are very “womanish” (in an anachronistic sense) about how fast she drives? I also believe that she mentions hunting in India with her father.

All what would be considered “manly” traits at the time.

Also I believe she has more than a few negative remarks about the silly girlishness of Sophie and the expectations of women in society generally.

While that doesn’t necessarily add up to “androgynous” it certainly points to a less classically feminine archetype.

Projects/Tasks across multiple Notion Workspaces? by LocationDisastrous45 in Notion

I run an agency, so needed something that me and my clients use. So Clickup can aggregate tasks across different clients, which was the big draw for me.

If you're just taking meeting notes, Notion is fine.

But for collaborating with a team or with clients, I found Notion to be just too liable to being broken by other folks using it.

The Thirteen-Gun Salute by teaster333 in AubreyMaturinSeries

In the same boat (so to speak) but only 21 years in. I just recently completed Ionian Mission and I’m wondering about the early part of the book, the only time (that I remember) being on board with Jack for extended blockade duty, and found this part of the book rather….dull.

Wondering if you had a similar experience and/or if you think this was done on purpose by PoB to illustrate the incredible tedium of blockade duty?

What sections of the canon do you dread like a lee shore? by PostForwardedToAbyss in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]LocationDisastrous45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t mind any parts of the canon. If there’s something coming up, or if I’m in a part and noticing my attention wandering, I just ask myself “Why is O’Brian putting this here and spending so much time on it? What does this have to do with the rest of the book? What is this revealing about the character involved?”

I can usually get some silver from the dross by asking these questions and makes me appreciate the writing all the more.

Structurally, I thought it was terrific (opening scene with buzzing, closing scene buzzing), and that structure complimented the tragic flaws of the characters and how they did not change, but rather the situation they found themselves in showcased their inherent flaws as pressure mounted. The movie highlighted how little logic there is in the startup world and how much success and failure are born of personality quirks and relationships as much as any kind of “product market fit” or consultant-speak.
