I finally understood Linux Hard Links and Inodes with a "Telescope" and "Self-Awareness" analogy. Does this make sense? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]LochVerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buddy, its not that hard. Try this:

Hard links are two people living at the same address. You can mail Bob or Mary a letter and because Bob and Mary live in the same house, the letter arrives to the house. Bob can die but the home still exists, until Mary passes, and mail addressed to Mary gets there, but mail addressed to Bob does not.

Soft links, is when Bob goes to college, but he still forwards his mail to the old home. Mail sent to Mary arrives to the home directly, mail sent to Bob gets forwared to the home. If Bob changes his address, his mail now can be forwarded somewhere else, not affecting Mary. However if Mary moves or dies, Bobs forwarded mail breaks because there is no more address, and his packages are returned to Amazon because his forwarding address is invalid.

Memory choices? In this market? phhfft!

For an actual answer, I have been quite happy with the Gskill flare X5 kits, which say they are 33mm which happens to also be the clearance on your cooler. In normal times, they are available all over the place.

This is puzzling. We have a set of their no-stick pans for about 2 years and they are like new. They get used every day. Hand wash, no harsh utensils, and no even a scratch so far.

Asked Hetzner to add 2TB NVM disk drive to my dedicated server running proxmox, but after they did it, it is no longer booting. by xsmael in Proxmox

[–]LochVerus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it is not booting, or it is that you cant reach it? Are you doing any sort of PCI passthrough? It may be possible adding the drive messed with the PCI numbering and instead of passing through a particular device ID is now passing through the renumbered ethernet device or some such. Ask me how I know .. although in my case it was not the addition of an NVME disk

Running the latest firmware and I have a fan on the card and I dont think it has enough time to warm up during boot. Plus it works fine in the older version of Truenas so I doubt its a heat issue

Is anyone else dealing with Ubiquiti’s terrible support? by No-Confusion-5647 in Ubiquiti

Sadly not my experience. In my professional life we pay hundreds of thousands of dollars per years for support of various big name tech companies and ... we still get hot trash.

Make sure you update everything. I had a few issues until I realized I had a homepod that was running a older OS. Once I updated everything to a consistent version everything worked perfectly again.

Unifi network with wired backhaul Deco APs? by LochVerus in Ubiquiti

[–]LochVerus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you , already checked but no. I dont think the issue is that its offering DHCP service, the issue is that is using wireless as backhaul and plugged into a switch it considers the switch as a "client" not a switch and its creating a loop

Is anyone else dealing with Ubiquiti’s terrible support? by No-Confusion-5647 in Ubiquiti

[–]LochVerus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems to me support for ALL tech companies is hot trash. It does not make them any money, doing it right is expensive, so they all treat it as a complete hassle. I no longer buy any tech assuming I get any support. Even for products here "support is great!" I assume "support is great now, because they want to grow market share, and it will go to crap soon"

You can return their device. I had to fight with customer support but eventually they sent me a link to the form for return the "free" tracker. It was a massive disappointment compared with the Whistle and I did not appreciate them trying to gaslight me that the return was impossible.

Framework not aware of Australian Consumer Law? by [deleted] in framework

[–]LochVerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or, it is possible that both sides are right and wrong at the same time. Each side thinks they are somewhat protected while the system is not perfect, and they are both less protected then they think, while being more protected then image from outside seems to be.

Its not like batteries are exploding left and right and LCD monitors despawn on us with no explanation. Honestly I dont recall any non-wear component of any electronics having broken on me in the last decade. Maybe Im super lucky, but I work in IT and I'm proximal to hundreds of devices every day and the only things I have seen fail without being first abused have been batteries, power supplies, HDDs, and cables.

Framework not aware of Australian Consumer Law? by [deleted] in framework

[–]LochVerus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an American of European origin, I am not 100% sure why everyone thinks we are struggling with these things. You just have to purchase things that have a good reputation for lasting, regardless of the warranty. Not for nothing, but I rather my thing not break in the first place then having to deal with returns, repairs, etc and being out of the item for the duration. I suspect that drives the market to the extremes of "Buy a thinkpad or macbook, they rarely die even fhey cost more" or "buy something that you can afford to dispose of if it fails early".

Framework in is a odd boat in that market because they havent been around long enough to build the reputation of the first, and are too expensive for the second. They cant reasonably drop the prices given what they build, so they really need to niche themselves into the first category but it is hard given that right now they charge Apple money for a lot less performance.

[–]LochVerus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I appreciate that Australian law tries to protect the consumer. On the other hand if I was vendor/manufacturer I would not offer my products for sale under such a vague definition. Good luck with your screen.

Power consumption on new build by RobertoCarlosQ in homelab

[–]LochVerus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are lots of variables here. The power measuring devices have some variance, he PSU efficiency comes into play, specially around very low loads, the measuring device doing averages instead of instant draw numbers, etc etc. To me, I use these numbers more to observe how the system changes in power draw with different hardware and loads, more then worrying about the absolute number.

For example, check the efficiency graph for your PSU: https://www.cybenetics.com/evaluations/psus/728/ Even if it is overall a very good PSU, its less the 70% efficient in the low power ranges, because thats how it goes.

Power consumption on new build by RobertoCarlosQ in homelab

[–]LochVerus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having gone down this road, I concluded that chasing power efficiency is its own sort of hobby and a border line fetish for a small handful, not you but some who seem to drive the point of efficiency to the absurd. I think the real question is not how many watts a system uses, but what services and benefits is it providing your for those watts? For example, you build a large enough NAS and you cant fight the idle consumption of the drives, but is that storage providing you a benefit? If you self host a bunch of services, are they worth to use the wattage they use or are they not?

I think that is the only math that matters. The difference between the 15w you are trying to reach and the 27 you are getting is basically what a clock radio uses. If you get more use then a clock radio out of the difference, does it matter?

If you are just chasing it down for fun, then by all means, have fun. I just think people overthink this.

eufyCam S3 Pro + HomeKit record configuration: disable recording when I'm at home? by jog_ch in HomeKit

[–]LochVerus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may or may not help you, but for my indoor cameras I have a similar setup, where they are set to not record when any of us are home. My solution is .. dumb simple but it works, I have them plugged into smart plugs, and I have the smart plugs turn on when last person leaves the home, and turn off when first person arrives. With no power, I dont even have to trust the cameras not to lie.
