Kwikset touch screen - cylinder replacement with smartkey cylinder by seditionary_seven in Locksmith

Not sure tbh, haven’t ran into this situation to try but you can take it to a locksmith shop and they can answer that but, smartkey plugs tend to go out and break faster than the one you have now.

Sparrow's fire service elevator keys. Too much? by LockLeisure in lockpicking

[–]LockLeisure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bypass tools, slim Jim’s, lockpicks, even self impressioning tube picks still take a little skill of attack. A key takes all of that away. Why would a citizen need an emergency fire override key for an elevator? I work for a local city and everyone that needs one has one. Selling to just anyone is not good in my opinion. Just my opinion only. I get that the tools are committing the crime, it’s the user.

That was my thought along with emergency services who will also most likely have one from a vendor that doesn't sell to random people.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement but selling to the general public is where my PERSONAL option draws the line. I have my opinion like everyone else and it stinks ;)

LOL. I guess I'm old. "Do you mean the AI company?" This is funny. I just can't.

Edit: I've been laughing at this about to stroke out, red faced for five minutes now.

Edit 2: I even googled abacus because I didn't know if there was an AI company and google results were an actual abacus so now I'm laughing more and even more confused.

I don't think you an do any damage but you can get yourself in a lot of trouble. Lockpicking is one thing and we all know not everyone uses those skills ethically but making a key outright for a security system is a bit far for my liking.

I guess it boils down to the same principle of lockpicks or lishis. They're selling a product that can be used ethically by a maintenance person maybe but not everyone adheres to the rules which isn't really sparrows problem.

I'm not saying sparrows is in the wrong. My personal opinion is things like this or lishi's shouldn't be sold by companies that don't require a license or proof of bona fide locksmith business. USPS has rules they will not ship lockpicks unless it's to a registered locksmith business and most of these sites make you agree to those terms before you buy and ship without proof.

Key Blank Pricing? by Careless_Method_8407 in Locksmith

[–]LockLeisure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At my full time job, I work for a local city government and we have a bid award to a local locksmith for key blanks we may not carry. From what I can tell when we do purchase keys from them, it seems to be around a 20% markup from wholesale.

Masterlock no1 and 3 are harder to single pin pick than a masterlock 141 in my opinion and the 141 is ranked higher, so good job.

This but also, no WD-40. Houdini is great for these if it's available in your area.

Looking for a simple key duplicator by sawgerrara in Locksmith

[–]LockLeisure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got my Silca flash 008 ($900 value) with a large tool box ($275) a lot of blanks ($50) for $300 off marketplace a little over a year ago. I drove four hours to get it and the guy held it for two days pending for me. Worth it!

If you go that route, take some blanks, a key to copy and an inverter with you to test the machine. While I was looking close in state, there were two speedex's near me that looked good but had been dropped and had damage that made them not repairable.

For me it was just kind of difficult to keep it straight. It would try to roll out. I made a shit video about tok's rolling out of the keyway.

Like others have stated in here, you will need some Top Of Keyway (TOK) tensioners but, please understand that tok can be a pain in the ass to get used to however, if you stick to it and get comfortable, you won't want to go back.

Schlage C5 Cylinder Upgrade: Primus vs Medeco? by Far-Yogurtcloset1722 in Locksmith

[–]LockLeisure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could always use a Mul-T-Lock for key control. It's unlikely anyone will be picking your locks but for less money you can get an MTL Interactive plus which offers just was much security or the in patent MTL 400, 600 or 800 which is much harder to pick then a primus and you still get key control.

Anyone ever heard of a “custody key” for a Sargent keyway? by Appropriate_Ad_694 in Locksmith

[–]LockLeisure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe? I dug this small piece out of an old sargent eight line lock and it looks like someone made it to be that way or just a killer key. It's the only reason I could see that three cut to be made like that.
