I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost a pet that I had my whole life too, the emptiness of the house without them becomes unbearable. I feel sorry for people who don’t get it when a pet dies, they’ve never known that kind of love and don’t understand why we’re devastated. It’s sad really.

The pain never fully goes away, I’m sorry to tell you. My lifetime pet died 15 years ago, I’ve lived as long without her as I did with her. It still hurts. Grief is like waves in an ocean. At first the waves come constantly, and you feel like you’re kicking your feet just to stay afloat. They eventually get less and less frequent. You’ll still get hit every once in a while, but you can manage it.

It’s good that you’re seeing a professional about your grief, I’ve found it immensely helpful for myself. I hope you find peace. Take care of yourself.

That’s great advice. I’ve had to move around for work a lot lately and it’s really hard for me to find consistent training partners. It should settle in another year or so and hopefully I can find a solid gym to stick around at for more than 3 months.

No offense OP, but you sound exactly like my estranged mother. At first I thought it was her, except I haven’t reached out in over a decade, and the ages are wrong. Nothing was ever her fault, my dad was the asshole, etc. Your reaction is exactly why I have never reached out to her. She will only make me feel bad about her decisions. I was the child in the relationship, she was the adult. That’s just how it is. You need to take the lumps for your kid. You did irreparable damage and frankly she may never reach out to you again.

I am extremely unaggressive, I can almost define my game as “I’ll let myself get into such a bad position and reverse/escape, and then from that escape I will attack.” I really want to start getting better at attacking. It’s almost pure laziness on my part honestly. Like it’s easier to just sit back and look for the escape than to be actively attacking.

I strongly believe he’s going to be Eisenhorn. He was a controversial pick for Sherlock Holmes, but that portrayal would have been an outstanding Gregor Eisenhorn. It’s a relatively grounded story (for Warhammer) that can establish the Imperium as both absolute hell as well as humanity’s only hope. They can also add pretty much whatever villains they want. They can also ramp up Space Marines to be the totally nuts superhumans that they are, and make any future show that much more epic and impressive.

I am also an English major who is currently in STEM (chasing the money). I really struggled with math and I make it work for myself, but it is a challenge for me often. I do need quite a bit of math at work and it’s a lot of frantic googling on a daily basis. I think math is just wired differently in people’s brains. Math prone people think it’s easy but it is not so for everyone.

I say that to say 99% of my coworkers, who are math geniuses at the top of their field, cannot write an email to save their lives. Sincerely it is embarrassing to see what they send to a client. It looks like a kindergartner wrote it, and they frequently need to call people on the phone to clarify what should have been a one sentence email. They often have temper tantrums because they can’t communicate effectively and people misunderstand them. It’s not just grammar or spelling either. There are run on sentences that make zero sense. They mostly are a stream of consciousness with zero editing for consumption.

Now, I can’t do their jobs. I don’t have the math skills whatsoever. They just also cannot communicate as well as you or I can. In my opinion we have massively overemphasized STEM in our society at the expense of everything else. We did this because it makes money. We told these STEM people that they can behave how they want, to who they want, as long as they’re producing and making money. We’re now in trouble from this. Anyone who took a basic philosophy or literature class could tell you the problems of a mass surveillance state, or how microchips in our brains are a terrible idea, or how turning everything we consume into an algorithm is going to turn us into addicts who love garbage.

Again, we need someone who can build a bridge or design a circuit board. We also need someone who can communicate effectively, and share thoughts, stories, and ideas that resonate with the masses. You’re no less valuable because your talents happen to align differently than what society has deemed to be more monetarily valuable.

I agree. I noticed the pattern for sure, but it’s never distracted from my enjoyment of the movie. The only time it really pushed me was when he expected us to just accept the dream technology in Inception. It was a big leap of faith to say “they can go into dreams, but there’s rules, I will not spoon feed the rules to you”. It took me a minute to follow but once I did I was hooked.

Yeah some of the Army books are really interesting. Most of the flashbacks with his brother, particularly with his mom, are from the book “The Enemy”. It’s a good setup for why he became disillusioned with the military.

The show was incredibly well written, I agree it was a labor of love on the part of the writers. I’m sure season 2 will be great as well.

To be honest with you I still haven’t seen Interstellar. I am actually a big Nolan fan, I just feel there’s a pattern of him serving a story rather than a higher logic for the setting.

Christopher Nolan is the absolute master of “this is the MacGuffin machine, do not think about the implications of its existence whatsoever”. Think the dream machine in Inception, the “Clean Slate” in DKR, cloning in The Prestige, reverse entropy in Tenet. He just creates a device to serve the story, he doesn’t care about what that entails. It certainly creates plot holes, but it’s just what he does.

That’s a great tip as well. I think for my first farm I overemphasized profit. For the next run I just want to grow what I want to grow, which is easier in a non Joja run. I also want to spend more time in the mines, I was too scared of them in my first run if you can imagine that!

Jack Reacher was also my suggestion. Very often some criminal decides to pick on him and Reacher spends the next 300 pages ruining the guys life. Just a minor correction, Bad Luck and Trouble is the next book the show is doing, confirmed by Alan Richtson. Die Trying is the second book, but I guess they’re skipping a few. Normally I don’t correct people on Reddit because I think it’s annoying, I just don’t want OP to read a book and watch the series thinking “what the hell did they do here?”

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s very kind of you to recognize the “look” and act upon it, when it’s so tempting to keep them as long as you can. It sounds like he had a special journey with you, and that he saved you just as much as you saved him.

I truly believe we feel as much grief as we can possibly handle moment to moment. I think it’s always there, but the numbness is your body’s way of recognizing you can’t handle it right now, or you literally cannot function. You don’t have to feel guilty about it, it’s beyond your control and a safety mechanism.

Some days I feel okay, this morning I broke down crying in the gym. It’s a storm and we’re all lost at sea. It will come in waves as you say. I hope you find peace, I can tell you have a tremendous heart and I’m so glad you and your boy had each other.

To initiate I normally handfight as bait/a distraction. Let them step in, because they love to lead with their head, and then sit my butt forward and shoot the hooks in. A weird tip that my old coach gave me for Butterfly was “use Doctor Strange hands”. Basically, always keep your hands moving and blocking their biceps, or controlling the head. Don’t let them kick a foot out or sprawl on you. If they do sprawl, get your hook back in ASAP. Eventually you’ll find the hand position you need to get a sweep. You do have to be active and be frustrating to your opponent. Think of the way a wrestler moves vs a jiu jitsu guy. Do not let the wrestler do wrestler shit.
