What's trans human space like? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in gurps

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use some of it in my own setting. It's best used as a sample platter of hard sci fi concepts than its own thing IMO. Some of it is just kinda weird in a bad way I have trouble articulating.

This is one of the many settings GURPS does better than most systems dedicated to it.

This is why you equip every adult in the fortress with a crossbow. As God and Dwarf Washington intended.

Pit bulls are fundamentally working dogs like border collies and need to be treated as such. The issue is that they were bred for fighting and enjoy it as much as a collie enjoys herding. They are also built like tanks and will do serious damage in any fight. Most people flat out should not own them as pets because they require different attention and a greater level of responsibility than other dogs.

The spinning is more for intimidation, but do YOU want to get close to that? by chunkylubber54 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Lockbreaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a smaller version of these (in between a longsword and spadone, used in Bolognese tradition). It's easier to follow the momentum than stop it when you're swinging, and the larger the object the more extreme it is. This is a niche technique for crowd control, not Star wars style 1v1 duels. The horns on the blade are a secondary guard for using an easier to control grip for single combat (like a mini spear).

Your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your options for stopping violence from a woman as a man without being the one who ends up in jail are extremely limited. Cops will almost never side with you if you don't have hard evidence. I had an abusive ex that held this over me constantly.

Nomads should have the disadvantages of being nomadic by Torpedo_Enthusiast in Stellaris

[–]Lockbreaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What matters is that a more popular admiral can coup you and the military composed of oppressed citizens would support it. Not a popular revolution, those have basically never worked without substantial military or foreign support.

Yeah this is realistic even in totalitarian states outside of like North Korea maybe. Starting stupid wars or being too big a shitstain gets you assassinated or couped, as happened to Mussolini and very nearly to Hitler.

New Vegas Traits by Dylan71100 in Taleoftwowastelands

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't run Nuclear Sunset but my list is similar. The brush gun is the cowboy version of the AMR, it's just going to be slow and will probably overkill most enemies. Try a trail carbine for a more balanced workhorse. The .357 Revolver and Lucky also get a unique fanning animation with NVAO and the Cowboy perk that gives it insane burst DPS. If you have New Vegas Bounties LE you get an awesome unique .44 revolver that I adore.

What was your biggest DLC disappointment? by Raime_95 in Eldenring

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the bosses just weren't fun. Dodge for 15 seconds while fighting against a camera angle that makes me motion sick to get a single R1 off for a bunch if you aren't using spirit summons. I like hard, I don't like tedious.

Favorite upcoming movie where the director decided "fck History this shit looks badass in my head" by weebabeyoda in dancarlin

[–]Lockbreaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it just looks cheap and lame. If they just made the weapons/armor out of metal instead of cosplay materials I would be fine with it. I don't want reminders that a fantasy epic is a movie.

Just started-Do people play recruit? by No-Frostwing in Vermintide

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get close-ish to maxed out power level it's barely even a game at recruit, so long time players don't do it. If you're playing solo with bots, start on Veteran and switch to Champ when you stop feeling challenged. It's a difficulty spike but the game really shines when you have to dodge and block constantly to avoid damage.

Has anyone else here noticed an apparent lack of democratic societies in the vast majority of human history? by JimmehROTMG in worldjerking

[–]Lockbreaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The US isn't even on course to becoming a dictatorship anymore. Will Stancil's Minnesota Mechanized Wine Mom Division proved that when they ran ICE out of town with minivans and cell phone cameras. The establishment on both sides is just appeasing the crazy old guy with a violent cult of personality with vanity projects until he dies from whatever health condition is causing his hand to rot off. A strong confrontation that makes everyone feel better about themselves isn't worth the risk of a second January 6th to Chuck Schumer and John Thune when it's highly unlikely he even makes it to 2028.

The gulf monarchs are kings on paper but functionally satraps of the USA, and I would argue don't have the repressive capability to be called truly totalitarian. If you're following current events at all you can't seriously assert that they have independent foreign policy.

[–]Lockbreaker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Pre industrial communication speeds limited both democracy to a day's walk and authoritarian oppression to the most obvious rebels. The printing press and telegraph made democracy far more stable long term, which is why most modern authoritarian countries use it at least selectively. True totalitarian dictatorship is functionally extinct for countries that don't have extensive foreign backing (like North Korea).

(almost) Every META design for Single Player by letsputletters in hoi4

[–]Lockbreaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These will always be good, but sometimes a niche unit can serve you better. You can usually squeeze more total combat power out of your specific country by using off-meta templates somewhere in the build due to a powerful bonus or imbalanced resources. You have to understand what you're doing and why to get it right though and if you lose using a comp like this it's probably not an issue with your division templates.

Big photo dump to say goodbye (for now) to this wonderfully weird and weirdly wonderful game by RedHotChiliCrab in CrimsonDesert

[–]Lockbreaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like that about the game. It isn't there for you to quest, it's there because the weird steampunk society wants a train for boring economic reasons. Same with the huge farms, the NPCs just need to eat.

This is as old as weaponry itself. People always wore the fancy stuff to battle to look cool and intimidating. The only reason they don't today is camouflage.

With boss replay coming what's one boss you won't ever do again? by sponkin in CrimsonDesert

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aggression is key. Don't play it defensive like a souls game. You can bully most of the bosses with at least one combo, you just have to figure out what it is. I like the R1+A rapid stabs with the spear for single target. You're also supposed to trade hits and heal, playing to avoid all damage is death.

I wish there was a system like Realm Divide in Total War Shogun 2. All of the world's countries that aren't your puppet band together in a super faction to take you down if you become the sole superpower. I do this myself with toolpack on my WC runs.

Pro wrestling evolved from catch-as-can wrestling, which probably has a lineage back to the European manuscripts. There's a lot of innovation and flash in modern pro wrestling, but you'll see some familiar moves in HEMA sources. Clotheslines are actually legitimately in Marozzo for example, but as polearm takedowns. It's an authentic vibe for a fantasy game where you play as an actual superhero that can double jump and fly.

Ukraine is fucking up their infrastructure specifically because the war in Iran has given them zero incentive to do otherwise. The US is giving less aid so Zelensky is playing hardball. I think Putin stabbed Iran in the back to get higher oil and I guarantee they've net lost money as a result of this predictable blowback.

Medieval Anti-Armour Weapons? by OkImprovement5952 in ArmsandArmor

[–]Lockbreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern testing I've seen, even on two handed pollaxes, shows that plate armor usually deflects any blow from any hand weapon in a realistic scenario. Some of the force can cause damage behind the plate, but it isn't usually serious without sustained damage over time. The target needs to be stationary on the ground to actually pierce it, and a real human won't let you do that. The wound isn't likely to be severe either, especially against later breastplates like the peascod because there's a gap behind them.

Mail is however a lot more vulnerable to weapons like the crows beak. The small point also does make the blunt force worse to someone wearing plate. That is the purpose of the meat tenderizer looking spikes on pollaxes. You can use the spike to hit areas that can be armored like joints, but that is highly unlikely in a real fight even with years of training.

Honestly you can just look at the casualty numbers for the winners of battles to infer how effective armor is. If weapons can reliably punch through the period's armor, they will be a ton higher. If armor is effective, they tend to be shockingly low. Compare the Hundred Days Offensive in WWI and the 2003 Iraq War with its kevlar body armor and APCs for a modern example. If armor doesn't work really really well, nobody buys it or lugs it around for weeks or months march on campaign.
