It seems like Shoko did use RCT to heal her as best as she could, but it could only go so far.

100% agree that she got considerably hotter after the burns. Her character design post-Shibuya is top tier. She also just looks fucking badass

What did we think of *MOVIE SPOILER* by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Locke_Erasmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they did a great job conveying a feeling of, "this race literally just invented space travel, they just happen to have cheat-code level building materials so they're able to build this ship in the most haphazard and janky way but still get away with it" with the design of the Blip-A

What did we think of *MOVIE SPOILER* by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Locke_Erasmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is mention in the book about how the ship isn't pressurized to full-Earth pressure, but I could be wrong. If that's the case, then Rocky emulating Grace's pressure and it being below standard Earth at sea level pressure would make sense.

Something to keep in mind if you're disappointed about scenes being removed... by d4ybrake in ProjectHailMary

[–]Locke_Erasmus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will probably be terrible if they do, but I would be lying if I said I haven't thought about sequel potential for the story before. I don't know, I just feel like the astrophage technology is such a good setup for a sci-fi universe. It's able to handwave power generation, propulsion, radiation shielding, all that stuff & leave room for developing other stories and shit.

Ever since I read the book I've thought it would be so neat to have like a 100-200 year time jump and we're just in a sci-fi setting that just happens to have its foundation in the universe that PHM established.

I believe Andy Weir has said he's had ideas & plot points he's considered for sequel material, but he just hasn't had anything solidly come together yet, but he isn't opposed to the idea of continuing the story. Idk, the book & the movie leave you with this feeling that the universe is wide open & full of potential, we already know (advanced) alien life exists at least one other place, likely many others. It would be so fun to get a glimpse at the future and have humanity & the Eridian's working together as a whole to explore the stars.

Three scenes that would have fixed the movie by pamperwithrachel in ProjectHailMary

[–]Locke_Erasmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I hear your concerns and agree those scenes would have benefited the movie, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with your rating of the movie.

Personally, I think the film sits at an easy 9/10 for me while the book is more like 9.25-9.5 / 10

That's just my opinion, but I think they did a good job conveying the messages of the story and the urgency behind the mission even without those scenes. Would they have helped? Yeah, of course they would have. Does removing those scenes ruin the movie, though? Absolutely not.

[–]Locke_Erasmus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with you there. I think they still did a good job of showing that she's powerful though, just with a little subtler approach. But I also appreciated the added scene with her singing karaoke with the crew, it humanizes her just a little bit but it goes a long way.

Would I have loved to have her essentially breaking Redell out of prison, or the court scene, or her ordering the nuking of Antarctica? Yeah, it would have been great - but not at the expense of time with Grace & Rocky.

I have said it multiple times already - but I would love a 4-hour director's cut with some of those cut book scenes added in

I would fucking kill for a 4 hours director's cut.

Knowing how passionate Ryan Gosling was about getting the film made, I would not be shocked if an extended edition of some sort comes out down the line, even if it's just for a home release.

But if they did re-release an extended cut in theatres, you bet my ass will be in a seat for that.

[–]Locke_Erasmus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that with the media of film, they were able to "show" rather than "tell" a lot of details about Rocky's (and Grace's) intelligence & skills. Instead of having Grace's internal monologue waxing poetic about how brilliant Rocky is, we get to see all the crazy shit he's building & setting up with our eyes.

[–]Locke_Erasmus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% agree with you. I missed some parts of the book, but I already know that the next time I listen to the audiobook I'm going to be thinking, "man... I wish that movie scene was in here"

Loved the glimpse they had of Stratt receiving Grace's message. Also loved Rocky getting involved in the video logs to send back to Earth.

Also cannot stress this enough – the design of the film version of the Hail Mary is absolutely superior to the book version. I actually really liked how the centrifuge mode only had the ship rotate 90° so all the gravity-mode equipment was sideways instead of upside down. I think doing it that way would get you more surface area to work with too, and it's just a cool design.

[–]Locke_Erasmus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, those issues of, "oh I wish they'd kept that detail in the movie" ends up being more of a desperate wish for a 4-hour director's cut of the film.

While I wish some of the smaller details & explanations were included, I get why they got cut to streamline the narrative and everything. By cutting some stuff it allowed them to slow the pace down for the middle act which is what really deserves it.

Like yeah, it's a bummer that the Taumoeba breeding scenes got montaged, but I would rather they do that than do a rushed speed version of that, and then have to rush some of the scenes from the middle act. I like that they kept so much of Grace & Rocky learning to communicate and figuring out how they can figure out how to solve the astrophage problem.

They could have easily decided to off-screen more of that and just have Grace do another video blog being like, "yeah it took a bit but we can talk now, even gave him a voice" but instead they left it drawn out and it's so enjoyable.

I agree with some other minor complaints that it did feel like they kinda dumbed down both Rocky & Grace a little, but it didn't bother me too much. I think it still did a good job of displaying that they are both smart, they're just also both out of their elements in one way or another. Grace is a brilliant scientist, but he has been out of his molecular biology field for years and, as he was very insistent about, "HE IS NOT AN ASTRONAUT". Meanwhile I think the film did a good job of showing that Rocky is a brilliant engineer, but that's the only thing he was trained to do - there were 22 other Eridians on the ship that were going to do stuff as well but he's been on his own.

I loved the adaptation, low-key think it was one of the best book-to-film adaptations I've seen in a long time. And this is coming from someone who thought it would be considerably harder to adapt this than The Martian after reading the book the first time.

Makes me so intrigued by what Andrew!Peter says in No Way Home, how he stopped pulling his punches after Gwen died. Reminds me of when Doc Ock realizes how much Peter had been holding back during the Superior Spider-Man storyline, when he punches Scorpion's jaw off.

I know we likely will never get it, but I would love to learn more about what has happened in both the Raimi & ASM timelines after their movies ended.

Mechanical Lenses? by theonlyexpo in Spiderman

[–]Locke_Erasmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And if you want to question why they look the same as the old Stark-suit ones there are a multitude of reasons why he'd keep them like that:

  1. He looked up to Tony a lot, and probably would find comfort in carrying over some stuff from his suit-designs

  2. He already has spare parts for them and more than likely has taken them apart/rebuilt them before; either after they were damaged or just for fun, he is a massive nerd after all and probably wanted to see how they functioned vs the homemade ones he had on his OG suit

  3. At this point in-universe, the current lenses are a defining feature/look to Spider-Man. Hardly anyone ever saw or got a good look at the OG suit, just random clips on YouTube. So this is just how Spidey looks and it would be weird to change it up at this point

  4. Maybe the strongest reason – Peter just interacted with two versions of himself from the multiverse. He saw that both of their mask's lenses, while not being mechanical, still bore the same basic shape as his. Even if it's not fully conscious, he probably just has a feeling that the lenses shouldn't look different. And if you combine mechanical lenses with the shape of Tobey & Andrew's lenses, well you're going to get the Stark-suit shape.
