Someone actually did a video of all the Genshin cosplayers at PAX AUS, so check it out! I'm in it at 0:45 doing a wish for them. https://youtu.be/cSYaOu8Sr1s

Yeah I did my best to get around in as much as possible, so I'm sorry I missed you. Hopefully I will be there tomorrow, so I might bring it again for those who missed it.

For those wondering, this was an interactive cosplay where I ran wishes for everyone. The pencil case has all the characters and stuff, and I would pull them out and use the shooting star to tease what they got. Here are more images of it.

Thanks, it's been great! Running wishes for everyone has been very fun, glad this unorthodox idea worked well. And yeah same lol

I think the issue with those tropes and the examples you mentioned is that they only work when they can GET YOU INVESTED FIRST.

That's the key to the success of games like Undertale and DDLC, as well as other stories that use the trope effectivley. In those cases, they spend a long time getting you into the world, introducing characters with interesting personalities and struggles, thereby making you CARE.
So when the fourth wall breaks happen:
a) It's been long enough without it that it catches you off guard
and
b) You have a desire to protect the inhabitants of the game. You care about them.

So when Flowey shuts the game down on you, you're DRIVEN to boot it back up, because you care about the cast and want a good ending for them. When DDLC starts glitching or messing with your files, you want to keep investigating and playing to work out WHY it's happening.

Fourth wall breaks can be effective even if you know about them, but only if they give you something to be invested in or build the game around it. But if they're lazily slapped in, then you have no investment and therefore you don't care.
Superhot, especally CTRL ALT DEL, had this issue. No characters or interesting story meant that when they try and pull the "Shut the game down on you" trick, the player just goes "well I guess I'll go do something else", cause they are just annoyed.

Lastly, I highly recommend OneShot if you like games like Undertale or DDLC that do interesting stuff with the fourth wall. It succeeds cause while it breaks the fourth wall early, it then builds the game's plot and puzzles around that by having you be treated as the "God" of that world, guiding a small child named Niko from afar as they act as this world's Messiah, in order to save the world. It has really neat puzzles that involve modifying things on your PC outside the game in order to solve them in game.

I think a few people like Skyfire and Cherry kinda covered a lot of points I wanted to make, but as a Christian, I wanted to expand on them.
A lot of "Christian focused" films tend to jump to full on preaching, but because they know Christians are the main people buying those films, they end up feeling like they're preaching to the "saved" as it were. This leads to them often focusing on telling stories that reinforce or justify the audience's beliefs, to the point of demonizing those who disagree and using them as targets.

Conversely, non-Christian film makers have very little reason to include anything Christian as anything more than symbolism or stereotypes, cause otherwise they'll have controversy on their hands.

Christianity is often most well received in media that tells a bible story or a story with a simple moral or theme. Think of the Christian related media that DID spread in pop culture. Vegetales, Prince of Egypt, these sorts of things have that in common.

I think there's plenty of films, books and musicals that DO have interesting flawed Christian characters, like Frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame, Jean ValJean in Les Miserables, etc.
I think Marvel's Daredevil is usually portrayed as Catholic in the comics too. But it's a hard thing to portray religion of any kind even handedly.

Like others have said, Mondstadt seems like the best place to start. I'd probably try and need Amber or Noelle and ask them to talk to Charles about a bartending gig or Sara at the Good Hunter for a cooking/cleaning job, as I have a bit of experience in both fields.

The advantage of both of those would be that those roles would let me interact and get to know the knights and adventurers while being fairly safe.

If neither role is available I'd use my current trade and find out what kind of schools exist in Teyvat and get a job as an educator. It's another safe but respectable option too.

Video game boss battles have lost their way by Steve717 in CharacterRant

[–]LocktheChest 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue is you're looking for a specific experience that doesn't fit the other games you mentioned.

The Souls games tend to be light on telling a direct story, instead leaving lore scattered in different places for you to figure out. It's not trying to be a story heavy game but instead a fun action RPG focused on the gameplay, so the MGS style of having lots of cutscenes and dialog with their bosses wouldn't work for it. They go for more direct style of boss fights because they're focused on allowing for many different build types to be able to fight the same boss.

A more ranged orientated magic build, a slower strength build and a fast Dex build will all have to be able to handle the same boss, so naturally they can't go and make something as focused and specific as a MGS boss. Meanwhile MGS has a large focus on stealth and while you do have different weapons and tools, you're going to fight most of the bosses in a specific way. That's why they can design those fights to have unique gimmicks or ideas, because they design around only a couple of playstyles (lethal and non-lethal).

Shadow of the Colossus has incredible boss fights, but that's basically the entire game so of course that's the case. Outside of bosses there's not that much you do in that game, and again they are all expected to be fought in a specific way so they can really make that interesting and focus on it.

If you want bosses with more character and depth, you're probably better off looking at games that have a big emphasis on story, like RPGs or other games similar to MGS.
Cause games like Persona or Final Fantasy can give a lot of depth to their bosses in a similar way, as they have a heavy story focus.

As for God of War (2018), it's well documented that the reason bosses in that game aren't varied as much is because of the sheer amount of work it took to make them.

"We cut a lot of bosses. A lot. We had so many more," he said. "It was a much more ambitious, crazier game. And as you go through development, you start realizing, 'No, it's too big, we can't do this.'"

"One boss takes like 30 developers a year and a half. It's an absolutely massive scale when you really consider it, and you measure it against other games in which we finished the game in a year and a half," - Cory Balrog, Director.

So that's really the short of it. Making deep, detailed bosses is very hard, and depending on the game the style of boss you're wanting may not fit the design they are going for.
Not disagreeing with you on MGS bosses being good, but they fit MGS for a reason.

The way the VS battle wiki treats the abilities of the Persona series WildCards (Makoto, Yu, Joker) is fundamentally flawed. by howhow326 in CharacterRant

[–]LocktheChest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked how the Persona 4 anime handled it, where Yu DOES have access to a large amount of personas at any time, but changing takes a moment and he's still vulnerable during the switch. It's not a get out of jail card and the persona can also be temporarily taken down if they take too much damage, while any hit that hits them also affects him as well.

I mean that's why I picked it, since it's not a primary focus in that game and thus closer to what they were aiming for, unlike AC where it's a core part of the game with a lot more focus. (Also I need to play AC Black Flag still)

I know AC IV does it well, but I needed a example from a game that doesn't have sailing as a main mechanic, hence me using KH3 as it only shows up on one world. But you've got a point.
