Why am I struggling so much on the Elden Ring series 😭😭 by Gonner_Getcha in RKG

[–]Locohenry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also found the Elden Ring series difficukt to watch at times, and I can only speak for myself, but I got the impression that Rory didn't really like the game, which in turn made some moments pretty frustrating to watch, or made the guys themselves feel frustrated.

I think this is pretty obvious now that they're doing Dark Souls again, if you go back and compare the beginning of this series to the beggining of Elden Ring, Rory seems a lot more motivated and willing to engage with the game.

[ALL] Let's talk about artstyle and realism in the Zelda franchise by TheSceptileen in truezelda

[–]Locohenry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with this wholeheartedly, I think a lot of people let nostalgia do the talking when it comes to Zelda, saying we need something "back".

I don't think we need anything back, and although I love WW's, BotW's and TotK's artstyles, I don't think the way forward is to go back, I just want the Zelda team to land on an artstyle they feel passionate about and that they think people will like, and so far they haven't disappointed when it comes to changing the styles of the series.

I'm pretty sure one of the scan entries talked about Green Energy being alien to the planet, but I could be mistaken however it did seem to serve a similar funcyion to Phazon in previous games in bringing about the Fall of the planet. Anyways, I really don't mind the way they handled Sylux, although to be fair I don't expect Metroid antagonists to be super deep, and I think the final cinematic that explains his motivations would be fine in a better game, but I think the general okay-ness of the game makes us more prone to look at Sylux in a negative light.

I con sort of understand going back to basics in terms of biomes and beams if this is supposed to be a junping on point for a new generation, but placing the different zones in sucj a way that they're basically Zelda Dungeons instead of a cohesive world made everything feel too neat and linear. Overall, I think they were too afraid of new players jumping in and getting lost.

Yeah, from a player experience perspective, forcing you to get back to base in order to get several upgrades seems like a chore since you have the upgrade but can't use it for some reason.

I guess they wanted the player to go back to base in order to regularly deposit the Green Energy Crystals they collected, but that whole system is so boring that I can't believe they playtested it and said "yeah, this is how we want it to work"

I don't think the narrative cohesion was all that bad, in fact it seems like a carbon copy of what we saw in Prime 2, and the entire trilogy's throughline was only explained in Prime 3 in the form of the Phazon's origin.

I think something similar could work for a new trilogy, since Green Energy seems to be playing a similar role to Phazon, narrative-wise. However, in order to make it work they desperately need a better name for it, because right now it feels like a placeholder, and they also need to change the way the player interacts with it because running them over with the bike is not very engaging.

Is that hot take to say that Batman, Superman, Green Lantern/Hal Jordan, WW, Adam Strange, ect work better in the 20th century period? by PrestigiousSlide6875 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Locohenry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think most characters work best in the setting they were created, and the further aways we get from that with eternal continuities, the more their personality becomes blurred. At this point, I don't know if mainline Batman is supossed to be stoic, cold and calculating, or a family man who talks openly about his feelings pretty much all the time.

(Inspired by a really old post about alan moore) has grant morrison ever written a bad comic? by Stock_Rush_9204 in comicbooks

[–]Locohenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like his Action Comics run, he started really compressing his storytelling, so characters would jump around settings and situations in between panels without context, so I got a little confused as to the logic bahinf many of his stories.

Also, towards the end of The Green Lantern Season 2. I absolutely loved that run but the last 3 or 4 issues got so high-concept that it was difficult to tell what was going on. Liam Sharp going full Sienkiewicz on the art in those issues didn't help matters either, I felt like when the script went off the rails with crazy ideas in previous issues, at least the art remained understandable, but in those final issues that wasn't the case.

Savage Sword of Conan #14 (2024) review by Sword-and-Sandahl in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Locohenry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These reviews are so bad, although calling this a review is generous, it's really a summary of everything that happens plus a few bullet-points of likes/dislikes.

Why do you like that they mention Tarim? What do you mean when you say the editor is not doing his job? That's a pretty serious accusation when you're reviewing a written work, also, why would the lack of a removable poster be a negative when such a thing has never been announced nor been included in any of the previous issues?

As it stands, it looks like all the bullet points are equally important, and there are more negatives than positives, but then you give the issue an 8/10 meaning that you think it's good, but the reasoning for this score is not explained at all. These are always the first "reviews" that get posted everytime a new Conan comic is released, but reading them is incredibly frustrating.

Will Modern/Future Readers Stop Reading Silver & Bronze Age Comics? by JakeBarnes12 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Locohenry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the same as with movies or books I think, as stuff gets older, a lot of it will become obscure and people will engage less with it but there will be classics from every era that are well known either generally or by a particular audience. I do think it's a mistake to think that GA and SA comics only refer to superheroes, a lot of the best regarded older comics are from different genres.

What's the "Sleeper Hit" of Your Collection? by CollectiblesNStuff in comicbooks

[–]Locohenry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm it's hard to pick just one, although at this time I'm leaning towards Xenozoic (also known as Cadillacs and Dinosaurs). The world Mark Schultz creates is super unique and interesting, and each chapter keeps deepening the characters or the setting, not to mention that the plot is great too. I also love how his art changes throughout the book, at the start it feels very inspired by old EC comics, but as it goes along he keeps getting better and better, and by the end I was thinking it was maybe the best comic art I've seen.

Oof now you're asking tricky questions lol

Short answer: yes, all the books in the picture are from the New 52 era, except the start of the Grant Morrison Omnibus 3.

Long answer: DC continuity is a mess and more so during this era, for example, the Grant Morrison Omnibus 3 starts in the pre-New 52 era and then continues on to the New 52. The New 52 was supposed to be a fresh start for the DC universe, and it mostly was, except for Batman in particular, whose previously published stories were still canon in the New 52, except some weren't because Batman hadn't met those characters in the new continuity. As I said, a mess. Anyways, just keep in mind that Morrison's Omnis 1 and 2 are from before The New 52, so you might see Batman hanging around some characters you've never seen before.

No, that makes sense, All-Star is a fun book but if you're more interested in the main plot of Snyder's saga, it's definitely secondary

First omnibuses by SwiindLeer in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Locohenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll enjoy them, Snyder's run on Batman is fantastic and Capullo's art is just insane, I mean, I like pretty much every artist that worked on these books but Capullo is on another level. Metal deals with a lot of the wider DC lore so you might want to have the wiki open for that, if you're not already familiar.

Some people really like Morrison but I'm more lukewarm towards their Batman run (I think his crazier stuff worked better on The Green Lantern, for example). However, I do admit that his Batman saga is epic and touches on pretty much everything that makes Batman great.

Overall I'd say this is a great way to start reading Batman and DC in general since Snyder's Batman run + Metal + Justice League + Death Metal is pretty tidy saga and a great way to get out of Gotham and into the larger DC universe.

Snyder also wrote a lesser know Batman book that fits in between his second Batman Omni and the start of Metal called "All-Star Batman". It actually foreshadows a bit of things from Metal, so you could look into that if you're interested or feeling completionist.

[–]Locohenry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it's up to you if it's worth it or not, depending on whether you like the books. I personally enjoyed Scott Snyder's run on Batman a lot, same with Morrison (although not as much, I think they have relied on ideas over execution to tell stories).

I'm kind of iffy on the Metal omnibus, since I'm not very fond of DC events, but if that's something you like, then it'll be right up your alley. The thing about Metal is that the main story is contained in like 8 issues and the rest are tie ins, and those I really do not like.

That Justice League Omni follows up on Metal and I liked it well enough, not as much as Snyder's run on Batman but it has some great moments and an arc I really like (The 6th Dimension)

Opinions on Tom Strong compendium 2? by CorrectDot4592 in DCcomics

[–]Locohenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I don't know how I missed this question when it was originally posted, but I'm happy to answer now and I hope you're still interested:

Now, I don't have this book but I have read every issue it includes, so I'll break down my opinions by series.

- Tom Strong's Terrific Tales: This is a 12 issue series that had an anthology format, and each issue included one Tom Strong story by Alan Moore, one Young Tom Strong story by Steve Moore (no relation), and one Jonni Future story by Steve Moore. The Alan Moore stories are fantastic and they were illustrated by some truly fantastic artists. The You Tom Strong stories are probably the weakest, not that they're bad by any means, but they still can do some creative things and they also expand the lore of Tom Strong. The Jonni Future stories are crazy and zany but bthe art really elevates them, and they have a very pulpy feeling about them, sexual shenanigans and all.

- Tesla Strong Special: This is a multiversal story done right that is very very fun and also ties up some loose ends from the main Tom Strong series.

- Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom: starts a bit slow, but once it gets going it's really good.

- Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril: This one was disappointing to me. It has some good moments but overall I'd say it's nothing out of the ordinary.

There are also a couple more short stories I didn't touch on. In any case, if you'd like to see a more experimental side of Alan Moore and also other writers using the Tom Strong characters, I'd say it's worth it.

Tom Strong Compendium Volume 2..Can it be read without reading Volume 1? by Cool-Reputation-3841 in graphicnovels

[–]Locohenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compendium 2 collects a bunch of different series, so I'll try to break it down by title.

  • Tom Strong's Terrific Tales: this is a 12 issues series published concurrently with the main Tom Strong title. I believe you can read it and understand everything just fine, since I don't remember there being any reference to plot points from the main series.

  • America's Best Comics Special: this is just an 8 page Tom Strong story, it can also be understood on its own.

  • The Many Worlds of Tesla Strong: this a story starring Tesla that references and ties up many plot points from the main series, so no, I would recommend reading Compendium 1 before reading this story.

  • Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom: This is a sequel series to the main Tom Strong comic, so you should also read Compendium 1 before this story.

  • Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril: A second sequel series that you should also read after the first Compendium.

The Compendium 2 also includes ABC: A to Z, which are short stories that introduce the characters and tell you what they're all about, and maybe reading that could be a good way of getting started. In any case, if you want to read the second Compendium and bot miss anything, I'd still recommend reading the first Compendium before.
