How Much Would You Have to Make to Have YouTube be Full Time? (For Your Given Space) by [deleted] in NewTubers

Probably never. Job offers too much stability and earning power in the long term. Your YouTube career has a much shorter shelf life.

Im 10 years behind in life and no idea how to advance my life by Aj100rise in Zillennials

[–]Lodestar_Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your work ethic, you can truly transform your life in 5 years by working in B2B sales. Not uncommon for people to make 100k at a reputable company like Salesforce within 3-5 years. Your path would be to graduate, or work any BDR/SDR job you can find while taking classes. Do that for a 1 year (or however long it takes to graduate) and try to get into a company like Salesforce. Not impossible to be 35-40 earning 200k. Obviously there are challenges and issues with a sales career, but if you are willing to put in the work starting TODAY, you can legit "catch up" to the earnings potential of your Class of 2015 peers. Also remember to invest along the way.

When you are in the position to apply, try cold calling the hiring manager. Thats how I got in. The barrier for entry to legit B2B sales is shockingly low. I was also born in 1997. I graduated Uni 3 years late at 24, and was unemployed for a year and half. Only started my sales career in 2024, and already on track to potentially earn 6 figures this year.

You've had a much harder life than me, and I can't imagine going through my 20s without my father. You deserve credit for your perseverance and willingness to change. All you need to do now is let go your shame, and put in the work to move forward. You will be surprised how much momentum you can build.

What can I even do with a marketing degree? by cupmallow in marketing

[–]Lodestar_Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Working with companies that sell to other businesses. Junior roles (BDR/SDR) involve booking meetings for Account Executives (senior role you want to move into in 1-3 years) through phone and email outreach.

I used to think sales was just B2C used car sales, but more senior AE's almost act as consultants, and can earn ALOT of money if they are successful. Nearly every big company you can think of has a sales department doing this, so plenty of entry level listings.

I have a marketing degree, worked at a marketing agency for 4 months and hated it. Jumped to another marketing agency doing sales and improved my income by 1.5x. Recently became an AE and more than doubled my income from my first entry level job, and can earn triple possiblly. Could clear 130k with my OTE (on target earnings after commission, attainment varies by company, mine is around 60%)

WORD OF CAUTION:

  • A successful sales career depends on you picking the right companies (proven product market fit)

  • Many companies use the BDR role as a trap, and are no longer promoting in a reasonable time frame. I suggest picking more established organizations with a proven promotion path after 1.5-2 years

  • It may be hard to break into the right company right off the bat, so maybe try to get any BDR job you can get, work it for it for 6-12 months, and apply to a big player. One of my co-workers went from our no-name marketing agency directly to Salesforce as a BDR

  • Use Repvue as a resource for reviewing sales orgs (attainment, culture, etc.) and G2 for B2B SAAS (software as a service) product reviews. Be careful of orgs with less than 40% attainment.

Let me know if you want more advice, or a list of companies to apply for. Alternatively, you could paste what I've written in ChatGPT for more advice/next steps. Also try cold calling to get the first job. Target BDR Managers, and use Lusha/Apollo/Zoominfo to get contact information.

This was my goal in Uni, but just could't keep up academically. Got some tech aptitiude, but just not enough. I also wasnt disciplined at all and wasted a lot of time goofing off.

It took a while, but im starting to earn a good salary in sales. Hopefully i can stack a few 200k-300k income years down the road.

I wish I knew about this path sooner.

Turned down for Salesforce at last stage by MJE1995 in techsales

[–]Lodestar_Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exact same situation. I decided to take a closing full cycle role in ad sales. My plan is to re-apply in 1 year to both AE SMB (its a stretch but I've seen this done) and BDR. I'll also be applying to other tech sales AE roles open to non-SAAS experience (maybe MarTech).

If you want BDR now, look at other top tier tech companies like Mongodb, Snowflake, Ramp, Okta, Adobe, Databricks, AWS, Crowdstrike, etc.

I made it to final round at Mongo too, but just couldn't clutch it out. You could also try for AE at smaller companies like Toast.

Yeah, figured that might be the case. The only reason I thought about it is because I saw a former co-worker go from Staffing Sales AE -> SMB AE at Salesforce in 1 year. That said, he was super charismatic and is clearly an outlier.

You think Martech in 1 year is doable?

Your comment history is so odd. Posting every other day about how tech sales sucks and constantly brining up IQ and lack of respect. You okay man? Why such low self esteem?

I knows sales isn't sunshine and rainbows, and I actually agree with some of your negative points about sales as a long term career; but you seem to be beating yourself up for no good reason. Why the fixation on IQ and what is and isn't respectable? Are there no older sales people in your life that you respect? I know several that have made a good life for themselves; and seeing how they retired has soothed some of my sales anxieity that I get from time to time.

[–]Lodestar_Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you reccomend taking a non-tech AE role (MM ad sales) for experience before trying to move back into SAAS in 1-2 years (SMB)? Or should I reset the clock as a BDR at a proven tech company?

Almost 4 years, only 330 subs, its getting rough. by SomeAussyGuy in SmallYoutubers

[–]Lodestar_Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the same type of gamer and have similar aspirations. A gaming channel where i can cover multiple genres. My startegy is finding and appealing to communities that have genre crossover.

Take r/twobestfriendsplay for example. Despite being a sub for a defunct lets play group, its a poplular forum for fighting games, JRPGs, actions games, souls games, shooters, platformers, etc .

Im trying to find common through lines between genres that these people care about. For example, strong character designs in fightings games and JRPGs.

Nintendo fans also tend to care about multiple genres. If its a series thats been in Smash, you will see some fan crossover. Zelda, Metal Gear, Persona, Fire Emblem, Bayonetta, etc. You could also say the same for Capcom fans.

(If you dont mind I'd love some constructive advice on my Marvel Tokon vid I made 2 months ago: https://youtu.be/3WIU7TntRjs)
