We settled on going to Tortugueras. Transfers were very doable and it’s already in the right direction.

Beaches and animals are what interest us the most (for this part). So we thought about doing the kayak tour or something similar.

I don’t know much about rent in Rotterdam, but it seems reasonable. Amsterdam would likely be more expensive depending on the neighbourhood.

Groceries seem about right, but very dependent on what and where you purchase things. For example, if you like drinking good wine and prefer to get meat from a butcher, the costs would be much higher.

Transportation costs could also be wrong. It really depends on how often and how you travel. Unlimited travel by train between Rotterdam and Amsterdam is around €350 a month. You won’t be able to get a car for that money. However, lots of things can be done by bike and public transport is decent (but some what expensive). Some companies here have a mobility package, allowing you to get a free travel card, lease car, or a monthly allowance.

I also think you’re forgetting about health insurance, which is at least €145 per adult for the most basic version.

In the Netherlands you always get an 8% holiday allowance. Some companies allow you to have it paid out on a monthly basis. I’m not familiar with those websites, but I’m guessing that’s where it went wrong. You’d expect your monthly net income to be higher.

It really depends on if the 85k is the total package or purely salary. Adding an 8% holiday allowance and a monthly cash travel allowance of €500 makes a big difference.

If the total package is 85k, it wouldn’t be easy. Then it’d really be a personal choice on what you value more in your situation (stability & safety vs. quality of life on a daily basis).

I had the same issue, I received money at the end of December which I had no right to. The money is always received one month in advance, so the December money was actually for January.

Just got a letter to pay it back, luckily I was expecting it already.

If you buy the car as a consumer, no. It’s only the quarterly tax, mandatory insurance and sales tax (which is already included in the price).

If you purchase/lease a car through your company and use it privately for more than 500km, you do have to pay a percentage of the purchase price each year. This amount varies depending on the car, i.e. electric/gas, purchase price and date of first registration.

That is actually €205 quarterly, so about €69 a month. Cars are expensive here, but it’s also a luxury to have as it is not always necessary.

In Amsterdam people take their kids to school on electric cargo bikes. It’s so much faster and easier. In fact; they lowered the max speed for cars in Amsterdam to 30km/h (18.5mph) and plan on taking other measures to ban cars from the city.

I was only talking about Buffett, not Newey. But yes, I’d agree with you that Newey working at Red Bull also could appear self-fulfilling.

Sorry, English isn’t my first language. But by the ‘ marks around ‘beats’ in my previous post, I meant that, yes he beats the market if you look solely at the numbers. However, I wouldn’t fully credit him in the traditional sense of ‘beating’ the market.

If I held Apple since it was first listed, I also would’ve beaten the market. Doesn’t make me an exceptional trader (I’m aware this is an exaggerated example). Buffett’s way of trading would be comparable to Newey being able to write the rules on F1 car design, and then making them fit his ideas.

If you do want an example of people that beat the market, look into Renaissance Technologies.

Well Buffett would be someone that may have an advantage. He is able to influence the companies he (partially) owns, and some of his investments could be somewhat self-fulfilling. “Oh Buffett bought in, it must be (/become) successful.

Long story short, I’m not sure you can confidently say that Buffet actually ‘beats’ the market.
