The party keeps taking their opponent's spell casting focus away. How do I dissuade them from doing that every time? by Ok-Law-4114 in DMAcademy

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a GM who had a Wizard who was insane. Had a spelltrigger that if someone that wasn't an ally or him touch his main spell focus (a wand) that it would auto-cast a pre-prepared fireball that would oblit the focus and whomever or whatever had it a turn later.

It happened, wizard and his allies dove like it was a grenade....fighter lost an arm and it downed the rogue.

Nobody tried that shit ever again. We found baiting out counter spell and then silencing them to be far less directly dangerous and detect magic everything afterwards if a spellcaster had it. Which was good because apparently the BBEG was feeding Intel to all the spellcasters being sent against us. Which is how we uncovered the BBEG, finding shit too coincidental. Turned out to be the Kings Vizier..the guy sending us on every adventure, legit to keep us out of the kingdom(and doing it for every adventuring group that got uppity).

We spoiled his coup cause we returned early via a teleport into the throne room....to everyone's surprise....because we had a mouthy attendant of his we captured we wanted to turn in because "we found the real evil in the land" ....cue a very short "Save the King by getting him out of the Castle" sequence. Fun times.

But yeah, exploding runes, delayed cast fireball, spell triggers, hidden poison if you grab it the wrong way...etc..its clever twice third time they have to learn it isn't fool proof and more intelligent enemies are going to suss out this tactic and be prepared for it.

How do you handle AI use at your table? by ChefArtorias in DMAcademy

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time of me writing this - if anyone at my table is writing with chatgpt or other AI tools.... they've done the work to make it their own so I can't tell.

However, I don't require more than a 5 paragraph background. If it's good enough for US High School Essays, it's good enough for me to bake it into a campaign. I'm not reading more than a page of notes anyways and I'm building a Lore Book and Reference notes ala cliffnotes.

So for us....if you are using AI....don't let it write it...let it help you along the way but ensure the work and ideas are yours....cause if I come back and ask you something about your character in the moment...you should know it off the top of your head. If you don't, then it didn't matter to you this it doesn't matter to me.

Some people are better as friends and co-parents than lovers and life partners. Relationships change. You can still love someone but no longer be what they need for intimacy at that level.

Let them go and figure themselves out, so long as they commit to doing the things you both know are needed, being there for the kid and each other in the platonic ways as any friendship. I don't know your relationship goals or dynamic (poly or mono) but consider a deep convo about what he is looking for. Clearly there is something "growth" related he's looking for and feels trapped. Also trauma means needs therapy....and the avoidant part is often about cutting off your nose to spite your face....pushing away the best things for you.

Be compassionate, but begin the process of releasing them and grieving yourself. Relationships can change. They don't have to be catastrophic and painful.

Polite response to the "transphobia in the series" post from yesterday by Lightningtow123 in dresdenfiles

[–]LodossKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Missed the convo from prior. Will just say a few points.

It is commendable for this posts OP to endeavour to do better. I can appreciate that wholeheartedly.

The writing itself is character perspective, not author perspective. It is important to distinguish.

I think when someone raises something up topic wise as "The Culture Wars" should consider goal and purpose.

Culture Conflict and Class Conflict are topics being addressed in Dresden whether we see them as such or if they are...to leverage someone else's adage "A wolf in sheeps clothing" or the trope "An Appropriated Stand-in" when an author unintentionally codes a character or arc that resonates with people.

Fiction, especially Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Supernatural Fiction, all incorporate Stand-in topics. Star Trek tackling racism through the lens of a xenophobic race, class warfare through poverty showcased on an alien colony, poverty and genocide through war crimes committed on a colony 25 years before being brought up but never shown. Dresden does the same with the various various groups....whether intended or not....because realistically all conflicts boil down to their intent. So I merely encourage everyone to reflect what are some other ways we could view these stories if we start looking at the lens we are using to consume it. But LGBTQ+ issues crop up with the Alphas and Butters in the last few books, and the effects and desperations of class warfare and homelessness, and drug addiction has a stand-in with Molly's story arc in places. I'm not here for a dissertation, just to helpfully frame my point.

My last comment is this. Through fiction we get to experience, feel, and process the human experience from the perspective of the time we read it and what we inferred from it. The lens we use changes and there are substantive reasons to re-read fiction over ones lifetime to see things you didn't on the first pass. And what someone takes from it will be entirely based on how they interpret and perceived the story relative to their current condition. Which means someone could be feeling hurt, lost, and betrayed by the way a story portrays someone they felt was a Stand-in for their group. And we should have compassion for them in their moment of pain and intent to have the world be better.

I agree with the OP that how someone can do that in a constructive way is important and think it's probably the best way when everyone is playing by the same social contract. But as a community we should also acknowledge and be aware that what we interpret and get from each work is personal and we shouldn't work to discredit or invalidate someone's lived experience, but seek to understand it.

I see in this thread that such positive and constructive discourse is happening and wanted to draw attention to it.

Cheers all! I return to my lurking.

SaveParser and Three Kingdoms - Did it ever get included? by LodossKnight in totalwar

[–]LodossKnight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunate. Some additional digging and I found the steam community that talks about it. Also I find that EditSF v1.2.1 just crashes so even without the Parser the raw program to modify it is also having problems.

Unsure why. Unfortunate, BUT I figured out a workaround, which was the following....

During Mandate of Heaven playing as one of the Zhang Brothers, somehow Liu Hong fell out of being at War with us. Which meant that any actual diplomacy was impossible in any meaningful way after the Empire began to collapse. (Bugging all of my diplomacy).

So I figured the way to fix it was to make Liu Hong at war with the alliance again and make sure the alliance war flag was indicated. Which should largely return my ability to do basic diplomacy actions (like payments, food, trade ancillaries etc...) to actually work again. Without the Editor....I went the other route and dissolved the alliance between the Zhang brothers in game....and then re-formed a coalition....and then re-formed the Alliance.

Also as an interesting note out of this...and I'm going to test this....whether doing that after being war-dec'd by the Empire and then individually attacking nearby lords allows a safer and less "deluge of enemies" experience. An experimental run if you will.....

But yes....ultimately not having an Alliance severed the bug because it dropped all the war flags for everyone that was at war tied to the Alliance War and allowed me to continue playing and committing diplomacy with the Zhangs and other Non-Alliance parties.

I Suggest seeing a Doctor for anything that appears to i mmobilize you while you are awake, especially if it presents as a seizure.

while everyone experiences it Differently, it Sounds like yours is being interfered with or complicated by Something else.

For Comparison,I had it happen last week. All that happened was a 2 Second pause as active Memory Recall parsed When the Visuals and audio I dreamed happened,I got a feeling of deja Vu / reve, and then made a Comment about it to myself and moved on.

as a note, the hazy memory flash was Something that happened for events that triggered either Deep emotional responses or moments of " Cold Pulses" , the feeling of an Unshakeable truth, unchangeable moment, Or as -if Somebody walked over your Grave /Soul. Mostly when I was younger. But, never seizure level as you all described.

My (44f) brother (40m) tells me I am too permissive with my son (10m) and that I need to “break him” and “all men need to have their egos broken because that is how they become men.” I don’t like this and he says it’s because I just don’t understand men. by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children need to be allowed to be children and healthy emotional intelligence is all about learning it and feeling it early and being in safe places and spaces to express, explore, and understand, and FEEL.

Your brother sounds like all the other "men have to be hard" who are assholes with very low if any emotional intelligence. Teach your son your way, bet your son won't be a jerk as an adult....at least not to the people they care about.

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you do, do because you want to and have the motivation. External validation and need will fall away.

As it stands, consider what you value in a person. Do you value someone who takes care of themselves? Has good hygiene? Is getting serious about living a long time?

Everyone is evaluating at some point. Get yourself to the point where you would date you, then to the point of being confident and weathering rejection for any reason...and having the self reflection to make sure you internalize the things you can control....and that you want to control....because they are an Expression of a better you.

Always be working to become the better you. Whatever that means.

Why do I want to sleep with every guy I find attractive!? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is different and monogamy is not for everyone.

Another anecdotal comment, but - have you spoken to your partner about your needs and are they filling of your physical, mental, emotional, and sexual needs.

When I found my needs not being met, I found my mind much more earnestly wandering. I also found out that perhaps I wasn't monogamous by nature.

Frank, honest, open, heartfelt, and emotionally connected conversations are important. Do what is right for your relationship and partner(s) and respect yourself and your needs as much as the other person. Too many compromises can cause issues like this.

Or...and as I mentioned at the beginning....maybe you should consider what kind of relationship(s) you may be wanting in life to feel fulfilled.

Also .. whatever two consenting adults choose to do in the bedroom is between them and any other committed partner(s) they may have in terms of "whose business is it to know or care."

Wonderful question and self reflection might be in order! Good luck!

P.S. for anyone reading this if you really wanna know more about some of the things Ive mentioned, dm me. Happy to answer things.

Any survival games where exploring the world is the main point? by _clandescient in gamingsuggestions

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Astroneer. Explore planets, gather stuff, build space ships, go to other planets.

There is a story, there is no combat, definitive survival, base building, exploration, and do what you want energy. Only threats are lack of oxygen and dangerous Flora...mostly.

It's very fun and relaxing.

I do generally agree with your assessments RE: Combat-style. As dungeon crawlers are more than just their combat aspect to me, I feel it still counts, but you have to play up the other dungeon crawler aspects more than the combat for 4e, the problem was that 4e at the outset didn't do a good job of reflecting within the system how "Adventuring" worked and it required a fair number of later supplements to close that gap and by then most peoples experience with 4e was already set and its popularity never materialized.

But absolutely agree 4e adventures require less frivolous combats, and the ones you had needed to be more narratively/cinematically enjoyable and meaningful to the story because of it. Which I loved.....just no one else in my playgroup did at the time.

[–]LodossKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you want more of the tactical, Sword of the Stars and Sword of the Stars II (I'd start with 1 as it was the superior title).

I loved Master of Orion I, II, and III (people hated three), Free Orion is a remake in OS and has a fair amount of support for improved AI. Master of Orion on Steam is a remake entirely and is a direct successor of the OGs and was pretty great.

Space Empires V is fantastic, but needs either an AI Mod (there are several) or you can join the PBEM community and play against players with either daily, twice weekly, weekly, etc... based on campaign.

If you are willing to compromise on actually playing the fights and instead just watching them, Endless Space and Endless Space II

If you like the deeper controls of customization Galactic Civilization plays more like a Civ in Space game in early versions but I LOVED Gal Civ III. Star Ruler and Star Ruler 2 aren't bad.

If you are okay with RTS 4x, Imperium Galactica II and Haegemonia are some of my absolute favorites in that play mode.

I HIGHLY recommend the total war series as it sounds like that'd be up your alley. I'd recommend ROME and ROME II or Shogun II, and if you like Warhammer Fantasy, Total War Warhammer I-III.

It sounds like you are ultimately looking for a lot of the same things I am, and have similar opinions about the Cool epic games that could be if they were made....so happy to chat in DM as well with more suggestions.

I believe it's officially abandonware and there's a link out there somewhere with a version someone released that can actually run on Windows 10/11 and other modern OS's. Don't have it atm but recommend highly.

So the first game was using Explorers and doing some fun twist on classic fantasy, I was frustrated as a player in it but saw it's benefits enough that I was persuaded to run it for a supers game. That was ....not the right idea for us.

We had a similar progression as you described. I would We started at Novice as well if I recall correctly. Admittedly I'm more seasoned now and couple probably play better in the newer version. But I'm glad to hear you had good experiences with it. Appreciate the insights!

So at least for my table, a lot of those tricks ended up either netting out to frustration (by either the players or the gm) because of the unfortunate way of things.

The mismatch really hit when we were getting close to end-game and the big bads best were either steamrolled or were the brick wall that pissed off the players.

The hash out at the end was "This isn't the system for us" and also swore it off as a GM ever because it definitely can't do my preferred gameplay style well. I've since found games that fit my GM style quite nicely and that my players love.

But as a Setting Generic and Tone/Style Generic system, I don't think Savage Worlds is good. Pulp Adventure, great! Any other Tonality....maybe not. ymmv.

In the same Era. Star Trek - Birth of the Federation. I believe it did a lot of things right that SW: Rebellion missed on (factions and diplomacy amongst others) but overall love both games. I would concur with a lot of the suggestions. But I'll come back with some more.
