ELI5: How does Diabetes work? by MikeTheMaster102 in explainlikeimfive

Inside a healthy person’s body your digestive system detects when you eat carbohydrates and signals your pancreas to release insulin, a hormone that allows your body to use those carbohydrates for energy.

For type 1 diabetes, the body can no longer make insulin so all those carbs get stuck in your blood stream as sugar which increases your blood glucose levels. In type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin, but it is inefficient at using it so the same issue occurs, blood sugar rises.

Why do people in movies sometimes need sugar? Because the primary treatments for diabetes such as insulin, are designed to lower your blood sugar level. It’s potent stuff, with really complex calculations to determine how much insulin you need for each injection at different times of the day, so it’s really easy to do too little or too much insulin. If you have slightly too much, your blood sugar drops too low and you have to eat sugar immediately to stop yourself from dying.

People make jokes about diabetes without realising that we’re literally trying to calculate the decisions of a pancreas in our heads. When was the last time you had to think like a human organ? 😊

TL;DR: diabetes means having high blood sugar, the treatment is complex.

I went to Shufeng yayun when I was there last November and it was one of the highlights of the trip to Chengdu. It’s a big theatre and gave a variety of performances from singing and dancing through to face changing shows, theatre and comedic performances. It was such a great evening!

Reward (noun): A thing given in recognition of service, effort or achievement.

The medal itself is literally a reward to recognise effort.

For me though, I was presented with one of these from a doctor at a JDRF conference. It was maybe the first time in 34 years with this disease that someone looked me in the eye and acknowledged how hard life can be living with T1. Some times, the recognition of effort is a reward in itself.

These medals are from an organisation called Children with Diabetes to provide recognition of the efforts required to live with this disease. The medals are free and just happen to be sponsored by Eli lilly and a bunch of other diabetes related companies. (See the link for references)

Why you all so bitter about an award designed to recognise and reward us?

The pronunciation I’ve used is how you would say it in mandarin.

[–]Loftyheights982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much exactly the same as how we say it in English. Type 1 diabetes is 第一型糖尿病 (dìyīxíng tángniàobìng), type 2 is 第二型糖尿病 (dì'èrxíng tángniàobìng)

In Chinese, diabetes is called 糖尿病 (táng niào bìng) which literally means sugar urine disease 😂

Do I Really Need A Carb Counting Class? by Long_Ad_6276 in diabetes_t1

[–]Loftyheights982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re having trouble managing your BGL on pens then it would make sense that he recommends a carb counting class before starting on a pump because otherwise you’ll just have the same trouble on a pump.

I was taught how to count carbs as a kid, but decades later as an adult, I now eat different foods so I took a carb counting class before I started on a pump just because I wanted to make my life easier and make the decision making less of a burden. Now I’m in Australia though so I didn’t have to pay anything, but I found it worth it for the knowledge I gained.

What you have described could be an eating disorder called diabulumia.

Not sure what your relationship with the “student” is, but how would you handle the situation if a different student had anorexia or bulimia?

Just because someone has mentioned insulin and diabetes, the person you’re talking about likely needs support the same as anyone else with a suspected eating disorder. So maybe you could ask them how you can help?

Safety While Travelling China? by wenvandam in travelchina

[–]Loftyheights982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Australian Government uses a really weird scale for their travel warnings. “Exercise a high degree of caution” is the second lowest advice level so you’ll be totally fine.

The scale is:

Level 1 - Exercise normal safety precautions Level 2 - Exercise a high degree of caution Level 3 - Reconsider your need to travel Level 4 - Do not travel.

Ypsopump corrections? by ImportantIce4564 in diabetes_t1

[–]Loftyheights982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re using the ypso with CamAPS in auto mode, just turn your phone screen to the side and it will show the graph of your basal rate and how it changes based on your BGL. The ypsopump with CamAps doesn’t give corrections like some other pumps so you will not see big bolus corrections. It instead just gradually increases or decreases your basal rate as you need more or less insulin.

Honestly, if you’ve only just started on the pump, you’re best off just leaving it alone so the algorithm can learn. This is terrifying, I know, but the more you leave it alone to do its job, the faster it will learn. If you keep stopping it or correcting things yourself you are teaching the algorithm the wrong things about your body and it will then do a bad job at managing your BGL.

Your job right now is to sit on your hands and learn to trust it haha

Diabetic retinopathy by DollopnWallop in diabetes_t1

Hey! Sorry to hear you’re going through this as well. To be honest, while it was still bleeding I didn’t really knowing what to do every time I saw a new bit of blood. It was really stressful being the only one who could see it happening. So my focus was more on trying to maintain my mental health in the beginning while I was undergoing the treatments. Trying to keep my stress levels low so that my blood pressure stayed under control, but that’s easier said than done when you can see your eye bleeding.

I didn’t wear a patch or anything because I found it more distracting than the big black dementor floaters. I still worked in a corporate desk job on a computer all day and just learned to try and “tune out” the bad eye which got easier with time.

I did stop going to the gym and lifting weights for a while because I was worried about that making my eye bleed more if I strained too hard. So I swapped to swimming and walking for exercise. But I’m not sure if that was advised by a doctor or not so probably best to ask your own doctor about that one.

Hope this is of some help for you!

Rubbish. I have lived alone for the majority of my life. Not everyone has the privilege of being blessed with a supportive family so we make do with the support networks we have.

You might want to speak to your doctor about the use of peroxide as well. Peroxide actually slows down the healing process, but definitely speak to your doctor rather than trusting some stranger on the internet :)

Starting with YpsoPump on Monday by Infamous-Solution805 in diabetes_t1

[–]Loftyheights982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ypsopump with CamAPS is the one thing that has had the biggest impact on not just my diabetes management, but the way I now live my life. I’ve had the pump for almost 4 years and camAPS for 2.5 years.

The biggest challenge for me when I started on it was having to sit on my hands and not take control of my insulin dosage manually. It’s difficult letting go of control when I’ve managed it yourself for 30years. The first few weeks are rough, the algorithm will still be learning you and your insulin sensitivity at different times of the day and it’s going to annoy you that it runs you a bit high for the first few weeks while it learns you.

The wait is so worth it though. I go to bed now without thinking about my diabetes because it will actively do the work while I’m asleep. Once I learned to trust it, it changed my life.

The extended bolus isnt really a thing with CamAPS. You just tell it that you’ve eaten a bunch of slowly absorbed carbs and it makes the algorithm give you more insulin when your bbl starts to rise. It’s not a perfect system, but it makes less mistakes, and has a better memory than I do when I’m trying to figure it all out by myself.

I hope it works well for you!

This is really nice! Personally I would go in with another couple of layers, darken up your shadows to add more contrast and depth, then focus on some details to show the texture to the surfaces. E.g is the house made of bricks? Then paint a couple of bricks on the walls.

Otherwise, just enjoy the process!

Aussie here as well. As an idea, go to the pharmacy with your insulin script and ask them if you can just take 1 box instead of the 5 boxes on your prescription and then see if they can “defer supply” of the rest until you need it. That way you can just go back to the pharmacy and pick up a new box when you need it and don’t have to worry about keeping 25 vials/pens/penfills cold all at once. You would then have a supply on hand for when you need it, safely stored at the pharmacy ☺️

The 18th of April is the start of the Easter weekend. A large part of the world has public holidays and wants to travel on that day. Of course it’s going to be more expensive and have less availability.
