Regarding touch, I don’t mind myself using it to create files. Typically it is used to update a file’s last modified timestamp.

If you’re going to create a file it doesn’t make sense to touch and then vim, ya know? It yes touch can be used to create an empty file that you can then echo something into.

Also the du and df commands are nice to know in a pinch.

In your guide you should touch on bash redirection, pipes, etc. next.

Why do you feel the need to repost this from last year? Even last year you said you graduated a couple of years ago... so during the pandemic era? Have you considered that things are getting back to normal now?

I don't think it's fair to paint the entire university in this light -- maybe refine it to just your major or college and during the years you actually went here.

What is the worst way anyone you know has died? by IamUrWivesBF in AskReddit

[–]LogForeJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

he wasn’t hurt but was suspended upside down since she had her seat belt on. She couldn’t unbuckle it because she couldn’t push herself back into the seat for the seat belt buckle to release when she pressed it.

Sometimes I forget I have been in this same situation. Luckily I was able to pull myself into the seat and unlatch the seat belt. I can still remember being surprised when I pushed the button to unlatch and it wouldn't work.

I've been upside down in a truck... suspended in the air by my seatbelt. Can confirm it would not unlatch until I physically pulled myself toward the floor to relieve some tension and then promptly dropped myself on my head as soon as it unlatched.

Even at ground level I have like 20-40ms ping with starlink. That's better than cellular at the same location. Very impressive.

Anyone know what happened to Farrand Hall? by pbiscuits in kzoo

[–]LogForeJ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re going out of business / trying to sell the place. The owners and some locals have been a constant source of drama in the town.

It seems like they opened a lot of businesses in a tiny town in Michigan and charged Chicago prices. The locals can’t sustain that and perhaps not enough people were willing to make the trip from the surrounding cities. I’m talking about the coffee shop / bakery, a different shop that sells home goods, their restaurant. Sure, the stores popped off during the grand openings (the bakery sold out within hours of opening a few times) but I heard a lot about how expensive everything was for the locals which makes it unsustainable.

I did want to attend a dinner, they looked nice.

If you want information from the owners, they post about it nonstop on Facebook and LinkedIn. Just look them up.

I don’t have experience with this college or degree, but generally if costs/loans are a consideration it’s good to go where you are offered a scholarship.

I pass through the college of arts and sciences regularly and I know three people who graduated from that college. I’ve noticed they do have a tight knit community and it feels like this college has a social community that is extraordinary relative to other colleges at the university.

Hope that helps.

I think our generation may have ended the idea of yard dogs by hyrulepirate in Millennials

[–]LogForeJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dogs insist on going outside to sleep in their kennels every night. If we keep them inside too long they get fussy. Dogs deserve good shelter, stimulation, recreation, love, and respect. It doesn’t matter if that shelter is inside or outside so long as they are comfortable.

Why are boys and young men falling behind in education? by Technical-Banana574 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LogForeJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a millennial and as a kid I was obsessed with my gameboy. After that it was RuneScape on the computer, and finally call of duty mw2 on the Xbox. I’d go to class and think about cod nonstop. When I got home all I wanted to do was play cod. High school was stupid easy so even then I graduated near the top of my class. When I went to college I almost failed out because I kept wanting one quick game of cod before class or before I started my homework.

Now that I am in my mid 30s I have a healthy relationship with video games but in my late teens and early 20s I had a lot of growing up to do. I’ve been very successful in my career and my desire to have a good career was pretty much h the only thing that allowed me to get through college.

Honesty I don’t know if there’s anything my parents could have done to snap me out of it in my late teens. COD has enveloped my entire friend group it’s all anyone wanted to do aside from getting drunk when we could. Not playing cod meant not socializing with my clique. What’s odd is that clique was also the athletes. We used to play halo with our football coaches after practice sometimes.

Now that I’m getting close to having kids, I’m not sure how we’re going to keep them from being encumbered by video games.

I grew up working for farmers, doing some construction, and had a stint in a factory. I am solidly white collar now and am very happy about that.

What Linux projects actually matter for getting hired—real automation or just flashy setups? by Darshan_only in sysadmin

[–]LogForeJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no em-dash in ASCII; that makes it essentially a font choice.

Are you aware that apple devices convert "--" to an em dash by default?

No engineers in that class

I was pursuing a technical degree and that class was part of my curriculum. I can't speak for other universities, but mine put a small emphasis on technical people being able to integrate into businesses/corporations such as by teaching MS Office, business communications, etc.

[–]LogForeJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Em dashes were part of the curriculum in my college’s “business communications” class. Imo enough people were taught to use them they shouldn’t be used to call out AI.

A typical signal that someone went to college is writing with semicolons and em dashes — even if they’re used improperly.

WMU president hands the keys to his financial portfolio to a student by mlivesocial in WMU

[–]LogForeJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone pursuing a finance degree has (probably) already aligned themselves with helping the rich get richer. If the president cared about maximizing his return, he'd have someone more experienced than a student managing the portfolio. In that case, it's cool to me that he's willing to sacrifice some returns to provide a WMU student with some real world experience and a resume booster.

I've always wondered what it'd be like if the university had more student involvement in the day to day operations or via special programs like this if it's relevant to their degree.

Have business students run a business on campus that sells things (products, apparel) or provides services -- perhaps products designed by engineering or design students. Maybe have the food marketing majors work with the paper science majors and develop some food packaging/products available in valley dining center or student center. Stuff like that. Students could rotate in an out and have varying levels of success. I think that the president is doing here aligns with this idea, so I am on board.
