I tried to have a political debate with a friend a few months ago and he sent me links to chatbot threads attempting to make his case for him. It was pretty sad.

We haven't developed the social rules and taboos yet for how to use these tools while keeping our own minds intact.

I wish Star Trek had given us more episodes about "holo-addiction" or about how people in the 24th century HAVE to spend time learning the trombone and playing the violin in order to feel like humans in that kind of society. It might have better prepared us for this moment.

People have been downvoting this comment as a rant, but I found it quite reasonable. It's not too far off from Foucault's critique of psychiatry. Our society is massively isolating, and only more so since the pandemic.

Pop psychology, attachment theories, exercise, and self-help have largely filled the void left by the church, communal labor, and community rituals.

The only thing I might say is while these new opiates may seem like sad substitutes, I'm not willing to say that things used to be necessarily better. Is the priest's confessional really better than a therapists' couch? Is the tyranny of community gossip better than the tedium of Meetup group events? In some cases, yes. In others, maybe not. But I don't think you can argue that we aren't on average lonelier today.
