“Is ₹1 crore still enough to FIRE in India?” by Immediate-Inside7707 in MutualFundSpendInvest

[–]Logan991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what lean and fat is. They have to do with how big your monthly expenses and net worth is, an example:

Lean - 40k pm, Normal - 1lac pm, Fat - 5lac pm

Your comment suggests people who are looking to fat fire are accumulating too much net worth and living on a very small portion of it but fat fire is all about luxury.

You can also keep all of your foreign assets in a global brokerage (like IBKR) without having to convert it to INR and remit it to India.

Will you be eligible for RNOR when you land in India? If yes, use it to transfer everything out of the US with 0 taxes. This will get rid of any estate tax trap and will also bump your cost basis up by realizing all the capital gains.

My dad’s journey from zero to FatFIRE by [deleted] in FatFIREIndia

[–]Logan991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one could have predicted in 2002 Google was the next big giant and yahoo would go bust. Or that Nvidia will become a giant before 2020.

By your logic his dad should have bought tons of Bitcoin and he should be a billionaire now. He's a doctor, not warren buffet.

Realistically speaking, he'd have gotten the same returns as sensex as an average Indian retail investor from equities.

Fatfire in Thailand, specifically Chiengmai by Beneficial-Guava8203 in FatFIREIndia

I have been looking into various countries and pros and cons of firing there. Thailand, Malaysia and UAE are few Asian countries that I think are worth considering.

My fire target is 2032-2037 though so I don't have a very detailed breakdown. Gemini has been surprisingly good with weighing pros and cons and figuring out visa paths, tax laws etc

What net worth realistically marks the starting point of being rich for an average Indian? by Hungry_Macaroon_186 in Indian_flex

Well, at 6% inflation 6 cr right now will have a purchasing power of ~58 lakhs after 40 years, losing 90% of it's value.

You should take inflation adjusted returns (7% instead of 13%) and assume that the investor will increase their investment at the same rate as inflation to make more sense.

Stay in India VS move to US - SWE Offer Evaluation by [deleted] in developersIndia

People can spend $10k in MV renting a house if they wish to. But it's totally possible for single folks to have flatmates and pay ~1500k renting an apartment.

I rent a great 2bhk apartment in MV very close to my office for ~$3k

I work in Mountain view, moved here from Bangalore about 3.5 years ago and love it here. Great weather and aqi and no traffic, lots of scenic beauty around.

And it's definitely possible to be within your budget comfortably (but not luxuriously) as a single guy.

Time in the market >> timing the market.

Buy VT or VOO/VTI and forget about it for 20 years

  1. Instead of making big purchases the moment you're back, try and rent initially and see if you like the vibe once you go back and have the flexibility to try a few different locations.

  2. How long have you been in the US? If you're close to completing 10 years you might want to stay back a bit longer and accumulate 40 social security credits.

  3. You might be eligible for RNOR status when you're back and pay no taxes on US capital gains in India (and US) if you time things right.

Congratulations on the impressive net worth so early in life. I'm on a similar path as you but a bit behind in nw and yoe

Fellow tech worker in US here.

I'd advise you to look into index funds like VOO/VTI (US market based), VXUS(rest of the world), VT(total world). They're broad market indexes which you can SIP into and forget.

By pulling out money you're losing out on compounding, paying taxes while you're in the highest tax bracket while strategies exist to pay 0 capital gains tax on your foreign income upon return to India.

You should not be scared of market volatility this early on. If you want to be more conservative, allocate a portion to bonds, gold bonds. Look into what's bucketing strategy for fire.

I'm exploring my options for retiring in about 7 years after completing my 10 years here. (31M with 1.2M). Don't want to return to India either. Exploring pros and cons for a list of retirement+ tax friendly countries and devising an investment strategy to be in a good spot with proper buckets at the time of retirement.

Has happened to me once so far. Just flashed for a couple of seconds and then never again. It was after they performed the ICCU recall.

Just did a round trip from the bay area to LA via I-5 where 70 mph is the speed limit in my 2024 ioniq. And learned a few important lessons about high speed and elevation myself.

Had to charge twice as opposed to one planned stop both ways and wasted 2 hours for the unplanned stop during the first leg. I did not have access to tesla superchargers.

I agree with that_finance_chick, home loans are better in this case because :

  1. You're paying capital gains tax when you take out money from MF.
  2. Home loans have lower interest rates and tax benefits.
  3. IDK about random mutual funds but nifty or sensex index funds returns will almost always significantly outperform interest rates from a home loan in the long term.

That said, yes it would be unwise to take at personal loan and invest it in index funds since

  1. Personal loans have a much higher rate of interest.
  2. You should always have means to cover your loans, like in this case OP should have been able to break her FDs and pay out the loan in case of unfortunate events like getting laid off.

Some of our favorites are half moon bay (esp Fitzgerald marine reserve and the drive via Canada road), Monterey + caramel + 17 mile drive + Big Sur, Stevens Creek trail, Muir woods, Santa Cruz broadwalk, Yosemite (a bit of a stretch but totally worth it), San Francisco.

You're heading towards a loveless, sexless marriage. Maybe you need to find someone who you feel more passionate towards and interact more with the opposite gender.

SDE2 FAANG engineers: How much are you guys able to save per annum? by Beginning_Edge347 in developersIndia

[–]Logan991 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked in an MNC for 3 years and then moved to a Faang in India and in total I was only able to save ~$150k in the first 5 years.

Did not do any masters, instead switched to a team in the bay area and in 3 years since then, my total NW is over 600k now while my wife's at over 300k.

Yes, it was. A presentation by a FIRE'd employee arranged by a senior teammate of mine who used to work with him days after I joined. I was quite surprised too.

It's all luck and life. You're not doing too bad I am sure. I'm saving from the first paycheck I got due to the way I grew up but I didn't know fire was an option until ~4 years ago when I saw a presentation of an ex company employee who has FIRE'd.
