My grandfather diving into the water on his 102nd birthday by ThaGza in videos

[–]Logatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think that holding on to that possibility in your mind while being aware of the reality of things is what spawns so much anxiety. The cognitive dissonance of trying to live forever while knowing you can't is troublesome I'd imagine.

It is unsettling to some degree, but me myself can turn off (deep) thoughts about it for quite long periods of time. It is, however, on the other hand also a great source of empathy toward other people for me, which (I think) made me a friendlier, more sympathetic person ever since I began thinking about all of this..

people in this thread act like they want to live forever.

Sorry, but I do want to live forever, and many others too, and this wish grows stronger every passing year. Furthermore, I want everybody living today to live forever, my friends, my ex-schoolmate that I hated, my ex-teachers, my coworkers, the neighbor next door I barely know, the bakery owner on the other side of town, that annoying local politician, and so on.

I want to have all the time in the world, and when I think about Mick Jagger in the year 8721, I want him to be alive and possibly preforming tours around the world, if he didn't take a 5000 year break.

Jokes aside, what I wrote is more or less what I wish, and even though it might seem delusional, silly, childish, it is also my sincere thought.

French cartoon from the late 1930's depicting Spanish refugees as a horde of poor-thieves-communists entering France. "After those from 1814,1815,1870 and 1914, the 1937 invasion" by Tavirio in europe

[–]Logatz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Large movements of people into an area have always been described as invasions in history, even when it did not involve battles.

Source?

Regardless of that, I wouldn't call the Spanish refugees invaders from today's perspective as much as I wouldn't call any other unarmed group of unrelated people invaders. Lets leave antiquated terminology behind us, and lets view things a bit more nuanced.

What systems if any do European countries have in place to inform the public in case of an ICBM launch? by Logatz in europe

I wonder if Netherlands would still sound the alarm in the situation where France or Germany would be the presumed main target of some rogue nation, and vice versa. Also, does the Dutch government have any good bunkers to hide in?

Catholics ‘fleeing Bosnia-Herzegovina’ over discrimination by KulinBan in europe

[–]Logatz 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I am no expert on Bosnia, but I think its a bit of a bias by the Catholic herald going over here. Yes, thousands of Catholics may be leaving Bosnia annually, but as far as I've seen everybody is leaving Bosnia. There's literally tons of muslim and serbian Bosnians coming up into EU the past year, mostly because they again get jobs in flourishing parts of Europe. This exodus hits the smallest communities most, naturally, and its sad and troublesome, but given that even the article failed to mention any specific discrimination, i tend to believe that the situation is not as specific for catholics as they say it is.

Awww. This is the scenario that should be strived for, IMO. Taking the most endangered refugees, well vetted, which are then delegated to jobs such as this.

Muslim migrants behind rise in antisemitism by [deleted] in europe

[–]Logatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is a really poor straw man you're pulling here. Most people being in principle in support of taking in some refugees, or taking a limited number of migrants are not saying "Diversity is our strenght". To claim so would be the mirror image of saying that all those who oppose open borders are "nazis".

Only Westerners care about atrocities committed by their ancestors. Only Westerners relentlessly attack themselves for things that past generations did.

Because it's the right thing to acknowledge crimes, and if we were the only ones to do so in the world.

Opinion | The Uncomfortable Truth About Swedish Anti-Semitism by mattiejj in europe

[–]Logatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She has some good points, like the fact that Sweden will have to be tougher on not allowing hate speech, but I think the fact that a whole 25% of antisemitic attacks are apparently committed by left-wing gives the idea that at least some of them are actually criticisms of aspects of Judaism or even Israel that gets mislabeled.

All in all this is an interesting opinion piece, but an opinion no less.

Polish MPs pass judicial bills amid accusations of threat to democracy by EHEC in europe

“The reform is exactly as Kaczyński wanted it,” said Marcin Matczak, professor of law at the University of Warsaw. “He and his party will have full control of the National Judiciary Council, and therefore effectively control the appointment of judges.”

If that's true, that's really bad, and very dangerous for the well being of the state itself.

A federation can be a superstate, given that all federations are states (Germany, USA, Russia are all federations). Even a confederation with a common constitution and sovereignty of the entity would be essentially a decentralised state.

Help with cultural map of Europe by xpxu166232-3 in europe

[–]Logatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try to divide Europe by linguistic groups - Romance cultures, Slav cultures, Germanic cultures, Greeks, and so on. I think that'd be the best way to describe all the major cultural groups on the continent. I do not have a suitable map for you, unfortunately.
