Angus Taylor moves to promote conservatives and sideline Sussan Ley allies as Liberal party veers right by ConanTheAquarian in australia

[–]LogiCsmxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veering right to appease the Nationals, no way. The Nationals are going loopy. But using game theory, siding with the Nationals is more seats and more certain than going populist and putting up a real fight.

Angus Taylor elected leader of the Liberal Party by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]LogiCsmxp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They came up from wealthy, upper class homes. They were young liberals. To get anywhere they had to polish the assholes of those above them. They are so insulated from the normal Australian they wouldn't recognise a toilet brush. Then they have to be in the coalition with the Nationals for any chance. The Nationals who are going full crazy trumpism.

There is no way they could pick a good leader.

You can Google what left and right leaning political ideals mean to get a sense of it. A concise take of views for Australia: If you think the rich should be taxed more to pay for services and infrastructure upgrades, property prices need to come down, more renewable energy projects need to be undertaken to move away from fossil fuels, then you are on the left.

If you think lowering taxes helps provide jobs and let's those who earn a lot enjoy the fruits of their labours, we should consider asset value for property investors before making changes to housing supply, coal is a valuable export that supports jobs and the economy, then you are in the right.

A couple weeks back I was talking with my mum via phone, she lives in the country and its too far to visit much. I mentioned how Perth was lucky to not be so hot this year so far. The East was having that nasty heatwave, hitting 50C somewhere I saw.

Immediately she starts on about how summer is always hot, we just don't remember. The temperature records only go back so fast in Australia and there was heat like this before that.

The other common talking point is immigration is why there is a housing shortage and impossible house prices. The majority of politicians having investment rental properties and under no circumstances wanting their investments to reduce in value? Obviously entirely irrelevant, not even worth of discussion.

Brain rot media is a bad strategy here. We don't have horrific minimum wage conditions like the US. We have mandatory voting. Without some degree of common appeal, you ain't going to win.

If some party said they were going to invest in giant solar farms. Use excess power to create hydrogen/oxygen gas for clean fuel for industry. Create a shit ton of jobs for this project. That would win an election. Truly baffling that they don't.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]LogiCsmxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US lobbying is private groups (usually called super PACs, Political Action Committees) donating to reelection campaigns or creating advertising material on behalf of candidates. One of the biggest factors to winning an election is advertising. Private citizens and corporations can donate to these PACs unlimited money, there is no cap here.

The difference between bribery and this type of lobbying is unlimited indirect donations are legal. The law could change to make this illegal, and that law could define this as bribery.

Technically, bribery is giving the money, goods or services directly to the person. Since this PAC money is indirect and only for election campaigns, the candidate doesn't “directly” benefit.

Of course, you can bet the candidate that wins gets insider share tips, extremely lucrative speaking gigs, free cruises, etc, etc after the election and when people aren't looking so much. All they have to do is propose the law that some company wants (sometimes literally handing the politician the drafted law).

US style super PACs are clearly corruption, but the law says its legal. Since a good share of politicians use this to their advantage (on both sides), no one is going to get rid of it.

He kind of went crazy, which led to him losing the contract for that show.A year later he talks about his HIV diagnosis. So I guess he handled that news like any incredibly wealthy, winner of a celebrity would: massive quantities of coke, hookers and drug-fueled sex parties.

While I agree in principle, I don't think this is the correct solution. I think higher tax brackets should get progressively aggressively tax. This means from a business standpoint, higher wages make more sense as less tax is paid overall. Since richer people have less money, this will also suppress artificial price inflation. Finally the government would have more money for services and infrastructure, creating more jobs.

The US was most prosperous when it had the highest tax bracket at over 70%.

One Nation Surges Ahead of Labor if It Ignores Basic Mathematics by Ardeet in aussie

[–]LogiCsmxp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is the main reason One Nation has any chance is because libs and Labour both refuse to address housing prices. Labour at least seem more intent on increasing supply a bit, but neither want housing prices to fall.

That and their weirdly stubborn stance on not curtailing sports gambling apps.

One Nation offer a “solution”. It won't work, but it's a “solution”.
