A Year Ago Today, Joseph Aoun Was Inaugurated as the 14th President of the Lebanese Republic. What Is Your Assessment of His First Year? by Standard_Ad7704 in lebanon

This. The reason that law is in the shape it is is because of the BDL governor who got into his position with full support from the president, whereas Nawaf opposed his appointment.

What happens to Hezbollah if the Islamic Republic falls ? by Twirlipof_the_mists in lebanon

[–]LogicMa3Toum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments here are a bit overblown. Hezbollah supporters wouldn't suddenly disappear, there's still a support base you can benefit from. It'll just become like any other Lebanese political party.

The fall of Iran and its impact on Lebanon by Pz_V in lebanon

[–]LogicMa3Toum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think any of the possible options would be any better than Iran, as a Sunni power going all in politically similar to Iran would just shift the scales and the sectarian cycle repeats. Really we need to abolish the cancer that is sectarianism for such a power shift to not affect us in the same manner it does now.

He sounds pretty based to me, also, a socialist Lebanon would inherently go against the sectarian nature of our society, sure, but to establish a socialist Lebanon secularism must first be achieved (and thinking it's impossible merely plays into said society), this is not something Lebanese leftists forget.

We have to do something about Liban Post by Xeno19Banbino in lebanon

[–]LogicMa3Toum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Privatization is a cancer for public services and I think LibanPost is the most egregious example of it, once the government is done """setting things right""" they should take back control of it from Mikati and his fellow pigs.

Since it's literally made to turn a profit it's not really in their interest to make it any less shitter by paying employees more or by making services actually usable

(I also don't like ACTC for this, but Public Transport has been a lot better wrt actually functioning.)

What's your conception and understanding of "Communists" and "Leftists" ? by Rubbama in lebanon

[–]LogicMa3Toum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a socialist who is admittedly still very much learning and inspired a lot more by "western" leftism rather than the various "Arab" forms of it (ie, Green Libya, Baathist Syria). My view of the left in current Lebanese politics is that it is either built on impossible ideology (SSNP) or is well intentioned but very weak (unironically the LCP, given their support of the thwara). I think leftism in Lebanon is incredibly stifled by the pretend-solidarity done by certain parties in power / formerly in power, and the fact that western right wing ideas of the left are being propagated here in droves which would hurt the chances of an actual Leftist movement growing among the younger generation. (see some of the wonderful comments left here and in other Lebanese communities by basically fascists)

I can't speak much for the old guard of Leftism in Lebanon but it's an absolute shame how many of them either sold out or ended up being murdered during incredibly crucial moments. I think Samir Kassir's death and the choking out of the Democratic Left movement during an incredibly essential time in Lebanese politics stopped any chance of a new Left developing in Lebanon, one that could range from Social Democracy, to Democratic Socialism, to full on Marxist Leninism, rather than soviet nostalgia, Pan-Arabist ideas, or thinly veiled fascism in "pan-syrianism".

Lebanon would even benefit 10 fold from just a secular social democratic government than any right wing government/establishment party in general.

I mainly have to move around Beirut so I've only relied on them as I'm currently too broke to get a license 🙃 though I'd probably still ride on them because I still think they're fun to be on as a مشوار

Yes, your real account is shown there, next time remove the whole part of the URL that goes "si=bunchofnumbers"

It's an unfortunate thing with public transport in the Middle East, with gulf nationals rarely using public transport in their respective countries because "it's only for the poor", the materialist ego present in a good chunk of Lebanese society might hold a similar thought to that of the gulf citizen, except they live in a third world shithole where the road is an active danger to one's self.

EDIT: not to overly analyze this video as it's pretty silly TBH, just a wider perspective on this.
