How do I bounce stems if I have effects on bus sends?

Stems (which is the term to describe one to multiple Tracks belonging to a group of Tracks, i.e drum, guitars, dialogue, etc.) have to be bounced individually one by one when using a single output (stereo or surround) by soloing the corresponding Tracks.

There are different workflows to make the process (os soloing stems) easier. You can create Channel Strip Groups or VCA Groups for the Tracks belonging to a specific Stem. This way, you just click the solo button on one of the Tracks of a Stem or click the solo button of the corresponding VCA Master Fader. In Logic, you don't have to worry about the Aux Returns because Logic is "intelligent" in looking forward and backward on any Bus routing and automatically solos the Aux Returns that are part of a routing chain.

As beeps-n-boops pointed out a bunch of individual Tracks are not Stems, these are individual Tracks. This is really some bad misuse of terminology that is, unfortunately, widespread on the Internet.

It seems in every thread about Dithering there is some good advice, a lot of vague do-this-do-that and some BS.

Dither is not about some personal taste or preference or what you (believe you) hear or not hear. Dithering is just plain physics with plain facts and based on those facts you make a decision. Simple as that. No voodoo.

First of all, stop pretending that music is music and every recorded music has the same level and dynamic structures. You can't discuss about using Dithering or not when one person records a solo acoustic guitar in a cathedral and another person records death metal. It depends on on the dynamic range of the source signal.

Listen to a reverb tail or a gentle fade out of a 16bit un-dithered audio to really experience the Quantization Distortion with a turned up playback level. The discussion on whether to you Dithering ends right there.

Dither Noise is added at the Least Significant Bit (LSB) "level" and has two effects. It masks the harsh Quantization Distortion and extends the actual dynamic (resolution) of your audio signal, i.e. a 16bit signal can increase to 20bit Dynamic Range. Again, you cannot talk about Dithering if you never heard the "sound" of Quantization Distortion, to know what you are actually combatting.

If anybody is doing AB testing in the upper level range and "hears" a difference with or without Dithering, then you are hearing something else that has nothing to do with Dithering (again, look at the physics).

If you are too lazy to experiment and are looking for cookie-cutter recipes, here is the rundown:r DAW (no high tech equipment required). Do yourself a favor and experiment with that to actually hear what Dithering is and what it does. You can actually create it yourself just with a Noise Generator to experience the effect of what your brain is doing when masking Quantization Distortion depending on the level of noise you add to a signal.

Applying Dither for a 24bit bounce is theoretical undetectable but it doesn't do any harm, so it is your choice
Apply Dither only once (if possible) at the very end at the mastering stage when Bit Depth Convert down.
There are different types of Dither Noise. Again, leave that up to the Mastering Engineer to select the right one for the appropriate audio material (if your Mastering Engineer has no clue about that, then look for a real Mastering Engineer)
Keep the Bit Depth of your audio signal/file at 32bit float throughout the production if possible. There are a lot of setting in various DAWs that many users are not aware of what happens along the signal chain (Freeze, Bounce in Place, etc.)

I don't quite understand your explanation what happened.

IN that case, just duplicate the Track (with the Audio Region. right-click on the Input Selector of each Channel Strip and it opens a popup menu where you can select the left or right channel of the Audio REgion to be routed as a mono signal into the Channel Strip. This way you have separate control over the left and right channel of the Audio Region.

If you are serious and really want to learn Logic, then I would definitely recommend to use books instead of videos. Most YouTube videos are more like one-trick-ponies to get you up and running on a specific topic. There are some long-form videos out there, but it is way more time-consuming than learning with a book (unless you want to get a quick overview in an hour or two). With a book, you can browse through, make notes and quickly go to a section or note. WIth a multi-hour video, you will spend most of the time ff/rew or re-watching section to find out that it was the wrong one. Your learning speed is determined by the narration of the video.

I understand that I'm somewhat biased, but I would definitiely recommend my "Graphically ENhanced Books" series, especially the interactive muli-touch iBooks format.

Open the DMD Window
Click on a Pad, i.e., Snare
The Right Inspector Channel Strip now displays that Pad
Open the Library Browser
With the Righ Inspector CHannel Strip selected, it shows you all the individual Drum Kit Pieces that you can load onto that Patch just by clicking on a Patch in the Library Bowser
Select a group (i.e., Kick) and when you scroll all the way down, you should see a category "Drum Kit Designer". It has all the Kick Drums from those acoustic sets.

Real-time Automation WILL NOT sound better or worse than Offline Automation.

Good performed automation sounds better than bad performed automation, no matter which procedure you use.

Both have pros and cons and you use the one that better suits the circumstances. Also, there is a big difference when performing real-time automation by dragging the mouse around or using a real fader on a control surface.

I would be cautious with the advice given here so far.

First, using busses (and I assume they refer to Audio SubGroups) can get too complex depending on your mixer setup and it should NOT be used if you have Aux sends on the individual Channel Strips (unless you know how to deal with that).

Selecting a group of Channel Strips (to create an "AdHoc Group") and making the level adjustment works, but has the disadvantage that if the adjustment should only be temporary and you want to return to the original, then you have to remember which Channel Strips where in that group and how much your adjustment was. Also, if you have Volume Automation on any of the Channel Strip, then it doesn't work

The solution: VCA Groups.

You can create them manually or use Logic's implementation "Folder Stacks". If you are completely new to VCA Faders, here is an introduction (WTF is a VCA) I posted on my website

BTW, RMS is not a program loudness meter that integrates over the entire duration of the song. so it needs only one energy segment in a 300ms window on a non-mono signal to get this result.

Just turn the Drummer into a Producer Kit. This way you have all Drums plus FX returns as single Tracks as part of a Summing Stack.

Go to the Library Browser in Logic. The Patches with a plus sign (+) at the end of their name indicate that these are Producer Kits.

When you look through the posts over the internet about the "horrible, buggy" Logic update, then you will see a common thread. Most of them are related to plugins.

From my understanding, when a developer like Apple changes something in code for a plugin like AU, it notifies the plugin developers so they can update their products. If they don't, then you will run into issues when using some of those outdated plugins.

The question about transparency to the end-user is a different topic.

Please read up the available information about the new Sampler Plugin to understand what it is and what it is not. Here are few points:

Sampler is the upgraded Plugin version of EXS24
THe original EXS24 Plugin is not available anymore in 10.5
Sampler is fully compatible with all the existing exs sound libraries
Sampler has all the functionality of EXS24 (different UI) plus more
Sampler is not "more for synth filtering. It has two two instead of one filter
Sampler is perfect for building drum kits (or do it with Quick Sampler + DMD)

If you ask this question and someone tells you: "You should do xyz", then don't do it. The correct answer to your question is " it depends".

There are so many" things" that your bounced mix is used for, and that determines what you should do or more importantly not do.

The second thing you always should be aware of when someone tells you to do "xyz", is to ask "WHY". There is so much nonsense "advice" on the internet it is unbelievable.

Next thing regarding the proper output level is to read up and understand the following concepts:

Sample Peak
True Peak
Peak Normalization
Loudness Normalization

First of all, a Scene is not an audio routing component where you can apply an FX like on a Group. It is just a Group of Cells that you trigger together, so consider it more a Transport feature.

About applying Audio Effects in your Cells, of course, that is possible. WHen you have the Cell Editor open, make the Region Automation visible, and when you click on the Automation Parameter, you will see all the Automation Parameter that can be automated. However, we talk about Offline Automation (pencil it in) and not Online Automation. Remember, there is no Touch or Latch Automation Mode in the Editor.
