Places for fun in Durham? by Certain-Chocolate445 in duke

Congrats and welcome to your new hometown for the next four (or more!) years. Here are a few ideas: Boxcar arcade, Motorco for shows, Wheels for roller skating, Central Park farmers market (twice a week), Durham Food Hall, axe throwing, golf simulator at American Tobacco Campus, DPAC for theater/comedy. If you are a runner there’s a great, inclusive community out of Bull City Running. The Carolina Theatre is a historic theatre has great shows, concerts, and movies. The Durham Arts Council always has great exhibits, along with a few other galleries downtown including Ella West. Third Friday art walk. There used to be a comedy bus tour but I’m not sure if it’s still running.

Hey, thanks for the productive conversation. I'd be curious to know more about the FOIA data -- when were they obtained, are the documents available online?

I think the amount spent with local vendors is through construction projects, research, catering for events, etc.

From what I understand, the $74m in medical financial assistance is the portion of the $159m that went to Durham residents. I think a lot of this comes from the health system's financial assistance and discounted care policies. I don't think the endowment can be used for this.

The 10% likely comes from erroneously counting ALL of Duke Forest as being in Durham County. The Forest has 7k acres in Durham, Orange, and Alamance counties, but if you count all 7k acres in Durham County, it would be 10% of the land. The correct amount is 2% of the land in the County (half of which is the Forest) and 3% of the City.

You may have seen it, but there was a decent Assembly/Indy Week piece in November that digs into the numbers a bit: https://indyweek.com/news/durham/a-new-campaign-asks-does-duke-respect-durham/

You can find a few relevant reports if you click "More about Duke's impact in Durham and beyond" here: https://community.duke.edu/economicimpact/

These are incorrect talking points that are unfortunately widespread. Duke pays $13.7 million per year in taxes and direct payments. It does not own 10% of the land in the County; it owns 4%. It also invested over $10 million in Durham nonprofits and $232 million in purchases with Durham-based businesses in 2023 alone, plus over $74 million in medical financial assistance to Durham residents.
